"You ungrateful brat! After everything we have done for you! Working days on end just so you can have anything and everything you need and want! You do shit like this behind our back!?"
Slap!
Parents use that excuse often. Especially ones that think that just because they work hard, a child should be happy that they have parents that want them but barely see them.
That isn't always the case and shouldn't really be. Not all parents who work really hard, never get to see their kids come home and just tell their kids to go away so they can rest. No. There are parents who do that, and even if their backs are breaking, they still play with their kids or say hello and do something small with them, like watch a movie.
They remember that well when it was just them and their one parent at a young age. Working constantly until they were sick but always came home and would do something with them. Even on the parents' off day when their parent could be sleeping in finally, they always played or went out with their kid so they didn't neglect them.
But what happened after marriage and gaining a new child? Everything changed so fast. They don't remember much with their one parent though. The one that always tried to do something even if it was so late at night. The one that would keep their promises no matter how late in the year it had to be to do it.
So where did all of that go when the new kid was born? Out the window. Fun things stopped happening as they got older. The new kid needed more attention of course, and things to do with them became less. The times they had to spend alone as a young kid themself came into play and taking care of themself took over. Making any sort of childhood they had go because everything stopped. But now as a teenager, when they say something or act out, it's disrespectful or being ungrateful. When they don't ask for help or let someone help, it's rude and asshole-ish.
But where was that attention when it was asked for? Pushed aside and then forgotten about.
When they break a promise, yells and fights break out because of it. But why? No one else kept their promises? No one else held their word to something ever unless it benefited them.
No one even paid much attention until the disrespectful, asshole, promise breaking jerk started to "act up".
They sat on their bed fiddling with a popper and stuffed animals to try and calm them. Nothing was working though. Nothing.
Fear, anxiety, anger, sadness, it started to take over making them shake until they were crying silently. The security they once had was gone years before, but it only drilled more holes for them. One day it'll be soon unbearable.
Looking up, they stared at the soft yellow curtains with white daisies until they relaxed. Closing their eyes and picturing the peach toned walls around them with a warmess as they started to rub their thumbs together and relaxing fully.
Tapping noises from their window made their eyes snap back open to see a smiling face and a wave.
Dorin.
They opened the window and crawled out.
"Hey, I could hear the yelling from next door. I thought I'd come check on you. Let's sit out here, I broke mom's chicken soup over with cider."
They nodded and followed Dorin up to the rooftop spot.
"I have a few more questions again today if that's cool."
"Okay," they nodded, taking one of the containers of food and popping it open.
"Did you mess up really badly for your family to be like this? I know alot about you, but I don't get why they would be like this?"
They sat quietly eating, wondering the same thing too. They knew that they messed alot really. But it was just small things any little kid would do for attention. Like taking a small snack in the middle of the night and getting caught. Yelling at their younger sibling because they were the older one, still at a young age, was jealous. Normal sibling stuff. But, they guess that it made the parents angry.
"My mom says your family does that because they don't want your sibling to wind up having the life you do and turning out like you did. Not having a childhood or anything so, when you mess up, all their stress and stuff about it gets taken out on you. She said that they are treating you like a first draft. With all these little mistakes. That really isn't okay."
They nodded slow. They didn't really think about it that way. Honestly. They thought they did something but at the same time didn't.
"I noticed the scars on your arms. Did you attempt to?"
They were full silent now. No one ever noticed nor asked them if they did.
Dorin didn't look. He knew the answer to that as well.
"You are like this," Dorin breathed out a sigh,"Because how they treat you and have treated you. As a parent, you can't close off some things from a child just to take care of another. It's not fair to either of them because it can create an underlying hatred from both sides. Even an unnoticeable hatred.
"Do your parents even know you are like this? Probably not because you believe they will keep staying, you are just seeking attention and that you are fine. That your self harm is just a thing you're doing because all your friends are doing it and you're only sad because that's just a teenager thing."
They held their breath, feeling the tears and nervousness starting to raise from Dorin's words.
Dorin placed a hand on their shoulder smiling kind,"It's okay. I don't blame you. I wouldn't tell your parents either. But just keep talking to me too okay? You'll be okay."
"My cousin says I need to get someone to put me in a hospital so I have care alot. She is worried about me and wants me safe."
"All she can do is try her best to help you tell you what you need and what you may need. But YOU have to be the one to actually do it. That is the most important part."
They nodded, slowly relaxing and continued to eat.
"Why don't you stay over tonight at my place? Your parents won't notice now that they don't have to get up early anymore."
"Okay."
Dorin stood up and held out his hand,"By the way, again, What is your name?"
"Well..."
