Genre: Fantasy/mystery
What I liked about this book:
This book has a really fascinating premise grounded in the real world. The main character is relatable and interesting, in that she's a grad student with a tough job looking for more. I love the idea of these real world mysterious objects having magical properties--it's a neat way to tie in some real-world unsolved mysteries.
What I did NOT like about this book:
I had a really hard time engaging myself with this, and it took a couple false starts before I read about five chapters in, in total.
I think part of it is that the book really lacks an engaging hook. Rather than being given a grounded scene of Jaimie for example, finding out more agents are being hired, I'm just kind of dumped into the middle of a random scene on a rooftop. Which makes it hard to get absorbed into the content.
From there the worldbuilding is just...intensely difficult to really wrap my head around, honestly. I'm having a hard time understanding how it all ties together.
I think if you started the story in a different spot and gave us a description of the museum and what it does right off the bat, this would be a lot more interesting.
Overall:
Meh. Interesting premise I will have forgotten about in a day or two.
Rating:
4/10. There is probably something salvageable here but it has significant structural issues.
