The man chased them through the hall as they tried to make it outside where they could meet their friends. Lora ran in front as Cole followed closely behind her. She could hear the loud footsteps of the man getting closer.
The sound of a gun coking caused her to stop and look back, the man know held a gun aimed straight for Cole.
Moving quickly, she grabbed Cole, pulling him away as the sound of the gun firing filled the air. She noticed the door behind her before pulling Cole inside and stepping away. Cole shut the door behind them, making sure it was locked tight, before turning to face her.
"Sorry," Lora spoke as she stumbled back, grabbing her side as blood began seeping through her fingers.
She fell to the floor, beginning to cough, blood dripping down her mouth as Cole tried to stop the bleeding. He grabbed some rags, pressing them to her mound, before wrapping some clothes around it to keep it tight and in place. He lifted her up, wrapping her arm around his shoulder.
"We have to move," he told her, the door opening sound, causing him to fall to the floor with her. He pushed her behind a desk before hiding himself.
"Come out, there is nowhere to go," the man spoke as he walked in.
Looking at Lora, Cole placed his finger against his mouth, telling her to be quite. He was not the strongest or the smarted, but he would fight the man out the best he could if it meant she would live and get out alive.
He began to slowly move around the desk as he watched the man. If he started getting too close to where Lora was hiding, he would throw something to distract the man and draw him away.
"Enough playing around, either come out of I will kill you."
Cole turned to look to Lora, her hands rested on the ground as she was losing her strength. She was struggling to keep herself awake and alive. Trying to creep, Cole started for her, but before he could, the man stood in front of him. He held the gun up, aiming it right at Cole's head, ready to fire it he wanted to.
"Found you," he spoke, "Lora, are you gonna come out or watch him die."
"Focus on me," Cole said, standing up.
"Fine." Stepping closer, the gun became apparent that it was pointed right at his head. He could feel the heat coming off the arm from the last time he fired. "Unlike the others, I have no problem killing you."
Lora quietly scooted, overlooking at the man as he held the gun to her friend's head. She braced her hands under her as she pushed herself up, the pain burning and causing her to wince. She pushed through her pain, looking around for a weapon. Finding a small scalpel, she grabbed hold of it as she slowly walked up to the man.
The man had not heard her until she stumbled on a broken beaker that lay on the ground. The man turned to look at her while the gun stayed pointed at Cole.
"There you are," he said, not noticing the knife in her hand.
"Leave her alone, she did not do anything!" Cole shouted in desperation.
The man began laughing before taking a step closer to her. "Nothing? She did everything, she was all they ever talked about. It was always about her!" He yelled before using his free hand to grab her by the throat. She let out a gasp before her breathing became short as she struggled for breath.
As she looked at her in a fury she slides the scalpel into the palm of her hand. With the little strength they had left, she shoved the knife into his throat. With a cry of surprise and pain, the man let go of her, the gun falling out of his hand. He fell back, trying to stop the bleeding, but it was too late he was dying.
Cole quickly grabbed the gun-running over to Lora, who now rested on the floor, breathing heavily as the blood-soaked through her shirt.
"Are you alright?" he asked, lifted her up.
She weakly smiled, lifting her hand to his face before it fell back onto her lap. Cole grabbed her arms, draping it around his shoulder before pulling her up with him as they left the room.
Walking through the hall Cole looked for a way out. The building shook under them as it began to crack from the horrors in the city. There were fires everywhere, and some of the rooms they passed were already on fire as it began to spread through the building blocking exists from them.
As he quickly moved through the building, he could feel Lora start to slow as she grew weaker, but that only gave him more motivation to continue and move faster.
They stood on the roof of the building as everything around them was on fire. Realizing there was nowhere to go, Cole tried to turn around only to be blocked by more fire.
Lora slipped out of his grip, galling to the ground as she began to cough up more blood. Her shirt was soaked in blood, and cuts and bruises littered her body.
Cole ran to her side, kneeling down beside her. His eyes meet her before they fell to the floor as he mumbled under his breath, "It wasn't meant to end like this."
Even though his mumbling and the loud notices around them, Lora heard him. She looked up her eyes widening as she knew what he was talking about. Everything, all the pain, and death around them were all because of him. He had started this all. He had caused the horrors and chaos around her. She had taken a bullet for him and had saved him only to learn he had betrayed them all. He had breathed his friends and those who helped him when no one else had, yet he had still hurt them. He had hurt her.
"I'm sorry, I just wanted to help. They promised you wouldn't be hurt, they lied to me."
Before she could say anything, the sound of wings beating together shocked them both. They looked to the other side of the roof, where a plane was now hovering. The ramp was open, and on it was her friends. She had not seemed them in since all the chaos broke out, but they were okay and alive.
Cole grabbed hold of her pulling her up.
"No...no...don't touch...me," she spits out, pulling away from him.
"Please, I can still fix this, let me fix this please," he begged her. He knew he was wrong, but he couldn't just let her die.
Without waiting for her answer, he grabbed her and began pulling her towards the plane. She was too weak to pull herself up or reach the aircraft. Cole desperately yelled for them to get closer as they were all screaming for her to reach. The building shook under them, causing them to stumble back and almost fall. Looking back, Cole noticed the roof was beginning to fall. He looked back to the plane before grabbing hold of Lora, telling her to jump the best she could don the coun of three.
He pulled her closer to him before walking towards the edge.
"1...2..." he began as she grabbed her hips, "...3!" he shouted as she jumped, and he lifted her the rest of the way.
The others grabbed hold of her arms before she could fall as they pulled her into the plane. They all looked at Cole, even Lora. He smiled, knowing this would be the last time he saw her.
"Thank you," he mouthed before the roof broke under him, causing him to fall with the rest of the building.
Lora let out a cry, tears falling from her eyes as she watched him fall. She knew he had betrayed them, but even through that, he was still her friend and did not want him to die. She had protected him only to again watch him die. They had been through so much together, they suffered and had fun times. She knew he had only wanted to protect them in his own way.
"Lora stop, he's gone. It's okay," Bret said, pulling her back from the edge.
Bret was another one of her best friends. When he pulled her back, he noticed the blood on her shirt. Quickly pulling away from the clothing, he saw all the blood before letting out a gasp. Everyone else noticed as they all let out an alarmed cry before working together to keep her alive.
Bret grabbed her cheeks, turning her head to look at him.
"Lora, stay awake. We are going to fix you up, but you need to stay awake."
Lora could hear Bret, but she wasn't focused on him as the words just flew through her mind. She had stayed awake for as long as she could. She was holding on and tried to keep herself awake by moving, but she had lost her strength. She was too weak and couldn't even focus on her friends anymore.
Her eyes began to slowly shut as she looked at the blurry faces around her.
Her friends watched as her eyes closed, her breathing slowing down. Moving quickly, they began working on trying to keep her alive. they grew worried at the amount of blood she had already lost. They glanced at reach other in awe that she had made it this far.
"Don't leave us. Don't you dare leave u...me. I can't lose you, Lora." Bret said, his hands shaking as he grabbed her hand, worried at what would happen to her.
