I yawn and check my watch. 11:30. Only half an hour till lunch. I sigh and turn my attention back to my teacher.
“Ok! So tonight’s homework is pages two, three and five.”
“Not page four?” A student asks
“No. No page four. We haven’t gone over that material yet so we’ll save it for then.” My teacher turns to wipe down the white board. “All right. We have,” she looks over her shoulder to check the clock on the wall, “thirty minutes left. You can start your on homework.”
Students murmur in agreement and get up to sit by their friends.
Sammy plops next to me.
“Hey.” I say flipping to page two. I look at her and notice that she already packed up her stuff.
“Hey so guess what.” She says leaning forward onto my seat.
“What?” I ask, half paying attention, half doing my homework.
“Listen!” She says tapping my paper furiously.
“Hold on.” I say holding up a finger, while I write the answer to the first question.
Sammy sighs loudly and flops her head and arms onto the table.
“Sammy, my god.” Finn says as he turns around in front of me. I look up and laugh.
“You know what Finn, at least I have a passing grade in this class.” Sammy says picking her head up to scowl.
Finn’s blue eyes gleam with fury. “Oh yeah?” He says, smirking as he turns around. “Get a load of this!” He says whipping back around and slamming his binder on my desk. He displays his multiple grade A tests and quizzes.
Sammy leans over to check them out as Finn leans back in satisfaction. Sammy gapes at his grades.
I roll my eyes and push his binder back to him.
“No need to brag, Finn.” I say as I set back to my work.
“Yeah if anyone deserves a good grade it’s Murphy.” Sammy says.
I blush. “Hey! I have a good grade!”
Sammy laughs and Finn smiles, “Yeah you always have the right answer Murphy.” Finn says. He brushes his black hair to the side. I notice light roots peeking out.
“Well,” I say snapping back to work, “I try and get my work done during class because I play sports and I always get home late.” Number two is.. C. Or..B? No. C.
Sammy laughs. “Yeah true.” Finn turns back around as Sammy leans in again.
“What.” I say. Just let me do my freaking homework.
She smiles up at me. “So anyway..” she starts again, talking about Damien. I tune her out as I finish page two.
“But, moral of the story,” I tune back in here. I look at her after I put my packet away. “He's 6’3” and was the star basketball player on his team at his last school.” She finishes.
“Wow,” I say, raising my eyebrows, “6 '3”?” I ask.
Sammy smiles at my reaction and nods. “Yeah but he’s a senior.” She says drooping a bit.
“So what.” I say trying to cheer her up. After all, Sammy’s beautiful and could get anyone she wants.
She smirks and says, “You’re right.” She sits up and grabs her bag as the bell rings. I see Finn walk out of the room.
“He’s in a rush.” I say, slinging my bag over my shoulders. Sammy laughs as we leave for lunch.
