Disclaimer: This isn't the start of the next season, but I felt like I needed to comment on this today.
Today I read an incredible short story by my favorite author, Ray Bradbury. This short story was titled 'The Last Night of the World', and as you may guess, the story was about The End of the world. While many people write stories about the end of the world, this was different. Not only does it stray from the uniform action and adventure sequences which come with the exaggerative presence of the end of the world, but this story brings hope and joy with the coming of The End, even though it was bittersweet. Many stories focus on the fear of the moment, but barely any focus on the reality of it. Ray Bradbury concentrated, not on the events which brought The End, but the reality and calmness of the situation. Everyone knew that the world was ending, but they still went on with their day, cleaning their dishes, listening to the radio, and spending time with their family, not any of the pain and fear which comes with most stories. People may say what the characters were doing were in faithless compliance with the fact that the human race was coming to an end, but that is not what truly happened, they allowed themselves to live one last day like it truly wasn’t their last, and in doing so, showed bravery in allowing themselves peace. Many people could run, could scream, could try to stop the event from happening, but that could only cause more challenge and heartache, most likely ending their lives in a place where they do not want to be and ultimately dying in struggle and pain. In conclusion, The Last Night of The World is not a story that comments out the gravity of an event that would destroy the world, but it shows the surprising joy which comes with it.
When an author takes a concept, not focusing on what others have done before them, but turning it their own, shows the genuine force of an author's ability. The end of the world, while it would usually seem terrifying and hard to think about, in this story, it was joyful mourning. What made it so beautiful was that Ray Bradbury found joy in a difficult situation, not that it was hard to find, but no one had ever looked for it before. When I read a story, I look for things I have never seen before, I don't look for originality, but I look for an author straying from the norm. This is a perfect example of a piece of literature deviating from the typical, predictable story about the end of the world. While it is okay to write a story along the lines of what others have written before, it is a glorious thing to see a change in the excessive pattern of the same story.
I hope you didn't mind me rambling about this story today, I really felt like I needed to talk about it.
By the way, I 100% recommend you read this story. It is absolutely incredible.
