The school gymnasium could not keep out the intense heat wave which had swept the city the next day. Teachers organized their distressed students by class to begin assembly.
“Okay, everyone, settle down. The sooner we get done with morning announcements, the sooner we can get out of here.” shouted one of the teachers. Disgruntled children groaned as the uncomfortable heat showed no signs of letting up. Within the gaggle, a young Marisol caught up with her friends.
“Looks like the heat got to us all, huh?.” she said, patting her frizzy black hair.
“I don’t get this, the weather was supposed to be nice today!” said Elizabeth, who held back her long brown hair to avoid it getting stuck to her face.
“That’s what I saw too.” she responded, receiving nods in agreement from the rest of her friends.
“Do you think Disruptor might have anything to do with this?” asked Noah, wiping sweat off of his brow.
Marisol looked around the gymnasium, where not one person looked to be prepared for the day’s temperature. “This does seem out of the ordinary. Toru, try to get a hold of the professor.”
“Sure thing.” responded Toru, reaching into his back pocket for his Novacom. He flipped open the small circular device where a small screen immediately fizzled on. Within moments, a short rounded man with thick, square frames appeared.
“Hello, team!” said the man from the Novacom.
“Hey, professor!” the five friends sounded in unison.
“We think Disruptor might be up to no good again.” said Jaleesa.
“If it’s okay with you, professor, we’d like to investigate this heat wave.” continued Marisol.
The professor scratched his chin as he studied multiple other screens, “Yes, I seem to be picking up a higher temperature signature in your area. Very suspicious. Make sure to suit up and see what you can find out.”
“Roger!” they all answered.
“Alright, let’s split up to cover more ground.” said Marisol, “Toru and Jaleesa, you guys head north while Elizabeth and I will go south. Noah, go west and see what you can find.”
“On it.” Noah confirmed, whilst Toru, Jaleesa, and Elizabeth nodded in agreement.
“We’ll meet back here in fifteen.” Marisol put out her left hand between her and her friends, “Ready?” The five friends stacked hands before sneaking out of the gymnasium undetected.
Outside, they each activated their Novawatches, where instantaneously, they were each clad in their color-coated super suits; Jaleesa in yellow, Toru in blue, Noah in red, Elizabeth in green, and Marisol in silver. Both teams of two leapt high and started for their search areas while Noah turned the dial on his Novawatch. In a matter of seconds, a red speedster skidded to a stop beside him. The top opened up and Noah hopped inside and promptly sped off. The five friends scouted the area, leaping from rooftops, seeking out alleyways, and investigating anything suspicious they encountered, but they found nothing.
The five returned to the school, having collected no information on the mysterious heat wave.
“Did we find anything?” asked Marisol, but her team shook their heads.
“Maybe this is all closer than we think.” said Jaleesa.

“Ah, what a perfect day!” mused Gracie, “Let’s get a heavier wind going.”
“Sure thing, boss!” answered Narendra, quickening the swing of the stolen stop sign he was fanning her with. Gracie smiled, soaking in the sun on her lounge chair. She picked up the glass beside her and rattled the loose ice inside, “and some more lemonade!”
“Yes, boss!” shouted Ivan, scurrying to refill her drink from a cooler left in the remains of their stolen ice cream truck. Beside the truck’s frame sat a rumbling monstrosity of smoking machinery, rattling and shaking as if it were alive. Ivan ran back towards Gracie with an ice cold glass of lemonade and placed it gently in her hand.
She raised her glass as a toast to their wicked scheme, “this is it, boys—this is the life!” The three of them laughed menacingly, unaware that they had eyes on them from above.
