After her strange dreams from with the Elevator Man, Selma wakes up in the medical bay.
She looks around more somber than in shock almost as if she is realizes that she is now a cog in the army. Her fate can’t be changed.
The scene opens with here opening her eyes in a slow manner.
She looks to her left and sees an empty bed than to her right to see a person lying down sleeping.
Selma- Hey…
She calls out to the person but the person does not respond.
Selma turns to face the ceiling and thinks. She sees a rotating ceiling again like from the third scene.
She just stares at the ceiling fan.
Unknown voice- Excuse me Ma’am, how are you feeling today?
She turns to the voice to by rotating her head to the left to see a handsome young man with unkept hair with some straggling hairs on his chin. He has black framed glasses on and appears to be relatively skinny like he doesn’t eat to much but it’s concealed underneath a lab coat.
He asks again
Young Doctor- Can you hear me Ma’am? Are you ok?
Selma just looks at him with dead eyes but not because she is angry because she just she chooses not to speak to him. He says with a smile.
Young Doctor- Well you are looking at me so, that must mean you can hear me at least.
He brings out a clipboard and says to Selma.
Young Doctor- I am sorry that they have to pump you full of sedatives, I really am but please next time don’t bite one of the nurses. It's pretty scary to wake up with that terrifying scar, trust me, I know.
The doctor lifts up his shirt to reveal he also has the same scar.
Selma looks at the scar and back up at the doctor.
The doctor looks down fro his clip board.
Young Doctor- It looked like you were seconds away from dying of an overdose sooo, they had to shoot you with even more drugs, again. This time to wake you up though.
The doctor looks up from his clip board.
Selma- My… family…
Young Doctor- That’s right… you were married.
The young doctor looks uncomfortable.
Young Doctor- Your husband has chose to repent through being an offer and as for your son… he was removed and his remains were sent to the recycling center for scientific research.
Selma just dead eyed begins to cry but is unable to contort her face so it is just tears rolling down the side of her face.
Young Doctor- I’m sorry Mrs. Walsh. But at least… your still alive and your under my care… so I’ll try to not make your life seem so unbearable.
The doctor forces a smile.
Young Doctor- I’m doctor Lambe and everyone who works here in this medical bay, were also patients like you. From the rest of the world, this our little piece of paradise.
Selma- Paradise…
Lambe- Yes, its a refuge from the Remnant. However, it’s only for the “sick and dying”.
The doctor give Selma a wink when he mentions the “sick and dying”.
Lambe- Besides all the doom and gloom, we try to keep this place peaceful. Anyway’s I’ll let you rest and when you have the ability to speak, I’ll return.
Selma- Wait doctor, I can speak… kind of. I just need some water to clear my throat.
Lambe- Are you calm?
Selma- Yeah. I can’t move my body, so even I wanted to attack you, I cant.
Lambe takes a second to think.
Lambe- Well if you are able to speak, then I will give you the rundown of the situation that you find yourself in.
Selma- How about he water first?
Lambe has a face that looks stone cold because he has told this to many patients before,
Lambe- I can’t give you water and you are not allowed to drink water anymore. Even if you try to the water will just come back up.
Selma- …
Lambe- You see. Everyone who is in the military, has to go through a rigorous surgery to cauterize the esophagus at the Laryngopharynx, well more precisely at the end of the Hypopharynx. Then we remove the excess tissue following the rest of the digestive system. When everything is done and set, we cauterize the Salivary glands so you won’t drown in your own saliva, the big three and the little hundreds in your mouth. That is the part I hate the most.
Selma has a face of shock.
Selma- What does that all mean?
Lambe- Well you know that tube on your back?
Selma- Yeah?
Lambe- Thats the only thing that’s keeping you alive right now.
Selma- What is this thing?
Lambe- It’s your umbilical cord. It gives you the nutrients you need, otherwise your body will begin to eat itself to stay alive, or you will just flat out die. I don’t know, I never witnessed it for myself.
Selma- Why have you done this to me?
Lambe- We were told that it was cost efficient to perform this surgery and supposedly a benefit to the medical community within the walls but personally, I think it’s just to be cruel to us less fortunate… Anyways, now you don’t have to use the restroom because of this surgery, all your body’s natural’s waste will be expelled via the umbilical.
Selma- Thats great…
Lambe- Since you are able to joke that must mean that you are aware, let me help you up so you can move your legs around.
Lambe helps Selma sit up and unhooks Selma’s umbilical cord that is located on her left shoulder by twisting the cap off, it leaves a gaping hole in her body. He reaches for a cylindrical shaped tube in one of his coat pockets and puts it in the hole. The tube lights up and immediately wakes up Selma.
Lambe- Does that feel better Ms. Walsh?
Selma nods her head and she stands up from the bed with the help of Doctor Lambe.
Selma- This feels weird.
Lambe- What feels weird?
Selma- My body, I feel.. I feel hollow. Like Im filled with air.
Lambe- Oh, It takes a while to get use to.
While Lambe and Selma are walking together, he gives Selma her order. Lambe says with a smile.
Lambe- Tonight is the last night you are here, ok Ms. Walsh. But don’t worry if you get injured out in the Remnant, you return here to heal.
Selma- Lucky me. Maybe I should just shoot myself in the foot, the first chance I get.
Lambe has a shocked look.
Lambe- Please don’t do that.
Selma- It was a joke.
Lambe- Oh.
Lambe fakes laugh but looks relieved.
Lambe- You are going to be part of the expansion effort with captain Immer’s squad tomorrow.
Selma- What’s that?
Lambe- What’s what?
Selma- The expansion effort.
Lambe- Oh that. That’s uhh… well that’s a project to rebuild New America into the empire we once were, through sending you poor devils for reconnaissance out in the Remnant.
Selma- Why would we want that?
Lambe- I don’t know, I’m just a doctor here. Do you have any more questions?
Selma- Why do I have a scar on the back of my head?
Lambe- I don’t know, that wasn’t in my department. Do you have any other questions?
Selma- Yeah… how is Captain Immer?
Lambe- She’s a bit of a… how can I say it.
Selma- Hard ass?
Lambe- Please don’t call her that Ms. Walsh.
Lambe smiles.
Lambe- She’s special.
Selma smiles.
Lambe- Johanna can be tactless at times but she makes up for it with the things she does… What happen Ms. Walsh?
Selma stops to read a chart. The chart reads “The Voice requires repentance through the expulsion of your own humanity”. The diagram underneath the quote shows the removal process of the digestive system.
Selma- Is that what happened to me?
Lambe lets out a sigh.
Lambe- Yes.
