She drove a couple of places before we went home. I'm excited about what she had in store for me with this "surprise" thing still. I'm so happy that I really don't care for the long wait. The radio was turned up loud as we sung along to one of Taylor Swift's songs. The sweet smell of newly changed gas was satisfying as well as harmful, but who cares at this point. We're having the time of our lives. Mom was in such a good mood and I was overjoyed. She made one last stop though, Walmart.
"Are you staying here ?," my mom pulled in to the parking lot. Waiting for a parking space.
"No , why would I? ," I hopped out the car as she yelled back.
"Wait Amber, oh never mind," I was a little to excited that I forgot the car was still in motion. But I'm ok, I just need to buy a little more bandaids and rubbing alcohol. I waited for my mother to come inside. I followed her to the frozen food isle, she bought some bread and some more peanut butter. She made me hold the gallon of milk while she looked for a cart. I was bored out of my mind when we went to check out. I mean we went past the clothes and they didn't have anything my size since the huge sale last week. My mom says I should gain a few pounds, but I tell her Beatrice likes me the way I am....that's probably why she all of in my biz you know.
"How long must we wait mom, they're taking to long...," I leaned back and forth as I held on to the sides of the conveyor belt. My mom looked just as anxious as the line grew longer and longer. It was pretty awkward to basically see the whole town in line as if we were going to be snowed in for a few days....it's the end of September for Pete sake!
We made it to the end. My mom pulled out her card as I grabbed the bags.
"Make sure to put the receipt and have all our things, I can't afford to come back in here," she had no where near seriousness in her voice, but she was just as tired as I was.
"Hopefully I will mom, besides, everyone clearly stoking up as if back to school season is over...," I joked, hoping she get it.
"Maybe they're ready for Halloween I suppose," she walked out with a stride as I scurried along, not looking as cool as her.
"Maybe I've underestimated your brightness during these dark time Amb's, but well soon see the light again," she open the trunk and helped me with the bags. I looked shocked at her strength, she seemed old and frail in comparison to me, but that's an" mom your too old" joke thing we have.
"How'd you get so strong?!"
"I see you've noticed I've been lifting weights recently. Gotta let some steam out somehow,"
"And you suppose I over eat to have some more skin?" We laughed as I opened the car door and getting in.
The drive home was peaceful. It was quiet, but we took the time to look at the starry sky. It was late now and I finished my homework in the car with a little help I might add. I feel nicer with mom around and she pulled up to our drive way a lot longer then I suspected. Maybe it was the nice scenery we enjoyed in the short cut? Who knows, but I do know this. I was still wondering what my surprise was.
I pulled out my night close and took a shower before bed. Sitting at my desk as I brainstorm more ideas for my family project. You know how personal history projects go, you flex about your family and relate to the history lesson in class or whatever. My teacher is pretty fun and I enjoy her way of teaching, so I really need to try with this project. My mom walked in as I continued to stare at the blank computer screen. I had nothing, no heirloom, no story, no nothing. Grandma's death was weighing ,e down and the stories I was told could fit in my ideal image. Well until mom gave me a big heavy box.
"Here," she said. I jumped in shock.
"Mom, you scared!" I stood out of my chair, embarrassed. She smiled as she handed me the box.
"Is this the surprise," I smile back, my eyes lit up in joy.
"Yes, let's see what's inside shall we," she act like she didn't know what was inside. She always act like this on my birthday or Christmas. I'm always satisfied with what I get, but I do know if mom feels the same way sometimes. I never have to be snarky with her gifts, but she begs to differ.
She watched me ripped to old Christmas wrapping she got from target. I see she put much "effort" into this.
"Mom, what's this!!! OMG it's a typewriter isn't it!?! I love it so much!!!" It's the typewriter I always wanted but never gotten.
"Your grandmother wanted to give it to you but never got the chance," she looked upset but continued to see me dance and twirl as I read the letter attached to it.
"To the brightest girl in the world, continue to be passionate and stay strong.....love grandmother." I couldn't stop reading it.
"Was this in the Will," I questioned my mom as her eyes stopped following me around the room.
"No, but she wanted me to give this to you the last day we spoke to one another, saying she hopes you like it. It was her's you know,"
"No wonder it's so pink and girly!!!"
"No," she sighed heavily as I stared at her. She was staring at the blank computer screen from earlier.
"It use to be mine when I was your age,"
"But that was long ago," I interrupted.
"Yeah, it was past down....but there's more to it Mom said before she hand me the first few blank sheets so I could write my story,"
"What was it about?"
"A fantasy story I guess, noting special tho," she walked up to the computer monitor and looked at the screen.
" Why don't you write about the typewriter if you don't have ideas," she looked back at me as I set aside the typewriter, putting my hair in a ponytail.
"I should, but what do I write about?"
"That's for you to decide...," I looked at her upset.
" Mommm, you're really not going to help me this once," she her voiced carried out the door. Saying, "goodnight sweetheart, don't let the bed bugs bite."
"I'm not a kid anymore mom, stop saying that!!!" She closed the door behind her, thinking what I said was a comedic to her. I focused my attention to the typewriter. There was sheets of paper in the box as well as instructions. I started fiddling with the thing, stumped on what to write about it or how to use it.
"I'll deal with it in the mourning," I thought to myself. But first I need to write the title of my document and project first. I walked back to the desk and did what I had to do. Then after, I made room for the typewriter. It went well with my aesthetic and I loved that. It really complimented my room and desk layout. I wish grandma was here to see it or help me with my project. But I'll just have to roll with the punches( that's what Bee usually says).
I folded back my covers and laid next to my nightstand. Reading text messages Bee sent. One said how happy I came clean to her. The other talked about how sorry she was for hanging around Kaitlyn to often than with me, but I need to get my jealousy problem under control. I was so mad, but to eager to talk about my gift instead. But I decide to wait until tomorrow, since my eyes were fluttering shut like a butterfly flaps it's wings. Until it finally closed as I clutched my phone towards my heart and fell to deep slumber. Sleeping early enough to wake up in the morning.....
