Whisper to Oblivion

1872,Nobiembre - Tanawa

1872,Nobiembre - Tanawa

Sep 16, 2020

Who would have thought of disturbing a peaceful night such as this? Only the sounds of the evening lingered in the an orphanage in the far corner of Tanawa. At this hour, a young man tiptoed his way towards the gate of the orphanage. His skin was the color of earth and his constable uniform was wrinkled and faded.

A young lady with emerald eyes stood stiff against the walls of the orphanage, careful not to be seen by the young Constable. Quite bad luck for him to chance at her escaping at this hour. It was hard to hide because of the bright moonlight.

His footsteps were heavy as if he was dragging his feet across the ground. As soon as he was out of sight, the young lady darted out towards the walls of the orphanage. However, it was quite too late to notice the young man approach him.

" Lea, you could always use the gate." The young man sighed. Surely, the headmistress would not like it if she were to come back gashed from escaping.

" You know nothing of this place, Sei." She whispered in reply.

" Well, you have your reason but we still need to follow the rules. To maintain order, isn't it?” His voice was light even though he sounded worried. " Also, being here is better than eating scraps in the ports up northeast."

Lea glared at him. Oh yes, he forgot that she's sensitive to those kinds of   things.

" Excuse me, then."

" I thought you would understand me because we are alike." Lea said. In the  dimness, she can still see the color of his skin and his trimmed, curly hair. " You will not listen anyway." She continued to ignore Sei. She was walking away when he held her in the wrist.

" I arrest you!" Sei exclaimed and whipped a finger to his mouth in response. " Here, I will listen." He responded pointing at his ear.

" A   Piede   Constable is putting me under arrest." There was particular emphasis on Piede.

" Still a Constable."

" Lowest officer." There and she exaggerated the word lowest. Sei cringed, crunching his face at hearing it. Lea continued," Accepted in position out of pity. Left out by his comrades. Is that the reason why you are here instead of   patrolling?"

At each sentence, his face crunched in to a small raisin. " A sharp mouth we have there, Miss." At the proper timing, he replied back. " According to the higher-ups, the mission this night is of particular importance. Only the best ones came."

Lea rolled her eyes, " You still believe them. After all that has happened after my brother died. " It was laced with so much sarcasm. Sei was left, mouth hanging open in surprise. He forgot how she could hit with words. He dare not talk back because how can he convince her to believe his occupation? Will he let her escape? Sei waited watching if she'll turn back. He decided to come inside the orphanage and let Lea be. Glancing at times at her direction., waiting if she will at least, hesitate.

Suddenly, there was a scream. The young man bolted towards the direction of the sound, a few meters outside the gate of the orphanage. It was in the east, by the thick woods just outside.

He found Lea standing, stiff and her hands covering her mouth. In front of her is a figure in white laying on the ground. About fewer than four feet, must be a person covered in white cloth. Lea would only shout if she sees a corpse.

" Calm down," he said to her. He knelt beside the figure and peeked at the figure covered by the cloth, then he whipped it open. At this point, he averted his eyes at what he's seen. It was a girl wearing only her underclothes, a thin, white camisa and a short skirt. Lea heaved a sigh and she went down to inspect.

The girl is unconscious but there was no noticeable gash or wound. Even though afraid, Lea cradled the girl in her lap and checked her pulse. A burden was lifted off her when she confirmed she was warm .

" She is still alive." Sei announced first, hoping that the lady will calm down. " But she will die if we cannot get to her safety." Lea said. " If she is unwounded," she paused. There was dried liquid on the area around the girl's  mouth. " Poison."

Without hesitation, Sei carried the girl back to the orphanage while Lea   assisted. Because of the lamplight by the orphanage's door, Lea began to scan the girl's features. There was no doubt, she is no different from her.

That can't be good, but still the writing does a great job to really draw me into the story.
