Sebastian crouches down to the ground to inspect the tracks in the dirt and broken foliage. He finds long linear groves and multiple pairs of foot prints in the small dirt path within the dense forest on the east side of Chantia.
"What do you think?" Laryssa walks towards him as he slowly rises from the ground and looks up at his twin sister. The ying to his yang, Laryssa shares his tanned olive complexion and dark, dusty blonde locks. But where he towers in at 6"4, she stands at an equally respectable height of 5"7 for a woman.
Sebastian brushes off his clothes and scratches at the stubble on his face as he glances at the scene before them. "They're heading southeast, maybe towards Teigh to transfer the slaves to Valfallow. Probably passed through recently as there aren't any overlapping animal tracks, and the group can't be too large as there's only one carriage. It's too dark to trek through the denser parts of the forest with a carriage so, if we're lucky, we might only a couple of hours behind before they stopped to make camp for the night."
He sighs and grins towards his sister, who was glaring at him with crystal eyes of grey and sky blue. "And what if they're illegally ported elsewhere along the coast, like we are?" she chimes in, causing his grin to faulter. They had a team prepared in Teigh to intercept any black-market trading's going towards Valfallow, but if they aren't heading to the port city...
"Then we better get moving so we can catch up with them. Cover our tracks in case anyone else is out here." He stomps past her with a quick pace, heading deeper into the lush overgrowth of the forest.
Laryssa rolls her eyes and flicks her sweeping fringe away from her face, her shoulder length hair tickling her bare shoulder as she looked at the tracks on the ground. She wore black cargo trousers and a tight-fitting black cotton jumper, the neckline slanting to one side to show off the top of her shoulder and lean muscular back.
Closing her eyes and wiggling the fingers at her side, the blood in her veins starts to boil in her body and the wind rushes around. It brushes her hair round her face, her small pointed ears poking out due to the disturbance of her hair. She imagines their foot prints being blown away with the wind and her magic does her bidding.
Laryssa jogs back to her brother, continuing the cover their tracks as she goes. Laryssa takes after their mother, and has a strong affinity for wind magic. She controls the air and pressure all around her and can even use her power to hear secrets whispered throughout the land.
Smirking to herself, she muses that she makes a damn good spy and rebel. She glances to the side to look at Sebastian as they walk side by side. "Don't be all broody just because I burst your bubble. There's still a chance your plan will be flawless" she spoke in a sickly-sweet singsong voice. Oceanic eyes that speak of tropical lands met her gaze. Sebastians eyebrows knitted together and he huffed, his voice was deep as he spoke.
"I'm not being broody, and you didn't burst my bubble. Focus, we don't know who might be out here." Laryssa quietly giggled to herself as she skipped a long, frustrating Sebastian further.
After a short while they passed a small bubbling stream, it splashed and trickled against mossy rocks and small bramble bushes as they carefully stepped past.
"Wait" he called to his sister who was slightly ahead. Pausing, she glanced around on high alert as she scanned the surrounding area for any danger as her brother crouched down towards the water.
Unlike Laryssa, Sebastian takes after their father and water magic causes through his veins. He can do a small amount of wind magic, as can Laryssa do a small amount of water magic, but their second gifts are pathetic in comparison to their main affinity.
And where Laryssa can listen to the wind, Sebastian can learn secrets of the past from water and its ability to hold memories. His head throbbed as he calls the power from the stream and a rush of blurred pictures poured to the front of his vision.
"They came through here, but the pictures aren't very clear. I think we underestimated how quickly they could get through the forest at night." He growls in irritation, kicking a small rock into the stream "fuck sake!" If they had covered more ground than they originally predicted, and they aren't heading for the city where their team of rebels were waiting to ambush them, then their plans will be ruined.
"Calm down, Seb. We'll get them, getting angry isn't going to help, let's go." She placed a comforting hand against his shoulder and gently pushed him away from the stream. He puts his own hand to hers and steps out of the touch as they start to jog in the direction of the tracks.
If they could just speed up, and catch up to the group to free them, then these weeks spent tracking the slave smugglers on Chantia will be worth it, Sebastian ponders.
For the past eight years, since they were eighteen, Sebastian and Laryssa have been the leaders of the rebellion group in the Alintage Archipelago. Born on Lightland Island, the twins grew up happy and content as the royal heirs to the throne, and spent their days learning the inner workings of their tropical kingdom and exploring the palm tree covered coasts. Until the king of Valfallow decided he wanted to conquer their small collection of islands.
Ten years ago, their kingdom fell. At the young age of sixteen Sebastian and Laryssa had to flee, but their father and younger sister died in the siege against the palace and their mother imprisoned. Since that day a large portion of their people are still enslaved by the Valfallow empire who prides themselves at their productive use of war prisoners and captured rebels.
Ever since, Sebastian and Laryssa have been fighting for their people against a tyrannical King who wants everyone to kneel before him.
They continue through the dense and looming forest, rushing past branches and vines as they cut their way through. In his hast to get to the slaves in time, neither Sebastian or Laryssa noticed they were being followed until a massive shadow crashed into them from behind.
