Fenner got up, determined to speak to Albion properly today. After glancing at his phone, he realised the other boy had texted him last night, apologising for the slap. He smiled slightly, glad that he had contacted him. He texted back, asking if they could talk at school. He got a reply quickly, agreeing to a talk - apparently, Albion had some things he wanted to ask him.
Fenner wandered over to his door, he felt slightly dizzy, and his vision was slightly faded at the edges like it usually was when he was invisible. “FUCK!!!” He yelled, throwing the door open. He bolted down the stairs, almost straight into his mother. “Fenny?! Is that you my sweet?” She asked, moving her hand through the air in his general direction.
“Mum!!! I went invisible again! What do I do?!” He panicked, then his father walked in to the hall with them. “Who’re you talking to Margaret?” He asked. She mother placed a hand on his father’s shoulder, looking him in the eyes. “My sweet, remember how I used to go invisible at times?” He nodded solemnly.
“Well, we have a son, Fenner, and he’s invisible right now. We have pictures of you with him, let’s go look, shall we?” His eyes clouded with confusion, but he followed his wife to look at the photos anyway. “Our son has the same curse as you?” She nodded, glad he was accepting it more easily than last time. “He’s still invisible currently, but you’ll be able to see him soon, alright?” He nodded again, then looked around the room.
“Alright son, well, I’m sorry for forgetting you, although this probably isn’t the first time I’ve said this either,” it isn’t, Fenner thought. “Anyway, have a nice day at school. I’m off to work now.” Fenner bit his lip, moving out of his father’s way. “Thanks dad, have a nice day at work.” The man whipped around, looking for the disembodied voice.
“See you soon, dad.” Fenner reached out, holding his dad’s hand. The man smiled, gave his wife a quick kiss on the lips before going; “goodbye…Fenner, Margaret.”
“Why did it happen again so soon after yesterday?” Fenner asked once his dad had left. His mother shook her head. “I don’t know darling - maybe to do with the curse being broken? Did you want to be invisible, or for people to forget? Did you want Albie to forget what happened yesterday?”
Fenner looked up at his mother suddenly; she was sitting at the table sipping her tea. “He won’t remember about yesterday will he?” Margaret shook her head. “No my sweet, if your dad forgot again then he will have too.” Fenner sat next to his mother, laying his head on the table. “Wait!” He sat up suddenly. “He texted me last night, apologising for slapping me. When I replied this morning asking to talk, he agreed, saying he wanted to ask me something - he might remember what happened!”
She nodded, her mouth a thin line. “It’s possible, but it also might be a coincidence - after all, the texts will still be there, he might have seen he apologised for slapping you but didn’t remember. Maybe that’s what he wanted to ask you about.” Fenner sank lower in his seat. Following the silence, his mother patted what she thought was his shoulder, although it was his head.
“Sorry sweetie, I don’t mean to get you down…I just don’t want to get your hopes up.” She bit her lip, hiding behind her mug. “I feel like I got your hopes up by mentioning soulmates, only for it to hurt you more in the end. I don’t want you to feel like that ever again my love.” Fenner sat up, leaning his head on her shoulder.
“Thanks mum. I appreciate the concern.” It was a gracious way of saying thanks for worrying about me, knowing he had to say something in acknowledgement of her words, or she wouldn’t know if he was even still in the room. “I’m gonna shower, then head out to school,” he said, getting up to leave.
“Alright darling. Drop me a text when you get home, I’ll be at my desk as usual.” He nodded, then remembered she couldn’t see him. “I will.” Making his way upstairs, he looked at himself in the mirror. The way the invisibility worked was that everything which was deemed ‘a part of his body’ was also invisible with him. This included clothing and anything about his person. However, when he held an item, such as a book, the book was still visible to normal people, as it wasn’t considered part of him.
His reflection was still there - although he was the only one who could see it. His vision whilst invisible made things slightly more washed out in general, and faded out at the edges. When he looked down at his own body, he had a light grey outline surrounding him, showing the edges of what was visible to normal people.
Fenner made his way to the bathroom for a quick shower, then headed to school, desperately hoping that his boyfriend hadn’t re-forgotten him since last night.
He was in for a surprise.
