Fenner stared at Albion, his tears ceasing to fall from the shock. “Y-you remember?!” Albion nodded vigorously, clinging on to the other boy’s shirt. “I do! I’m so sorry for breaking my promise!” Fenner wasted no time in pulling his boyfriend’s chin up, claiming his lips. “You really remember?!”
“Yes you big idiot! I’m not joking, I really remember. I-I don’t know how, or how I am able to see you…” Fenner clung to him, scared that if he released him, Albion would forget again. “I don’t know either, we can ask my mum later, she knows more about how this works than me.”
Albion nodded, refusing to let go of Fenner’s shirt. “So…we’re still boyfriends, right?” He asked hesitantly. Fenner laughed slightly, “fuck yeah we are.” The bell rang, signalling the start of the school day. “Ah shit,” Fenner breathed out. “Lets get to class I guess.” Albion stood up, letting go of his shirt to take his hand instead.
“What if I forget you again?” Fenner squeezed his hand. “I’ll just make you remember again.” A giggle escaped Albion’s mouth. “Pretty sure that isn’t how I remembered, but I appreciate the sentiment.”
As Fenner sat down in his seat, completely ignored by all, considering he was invisible, he smiled to himself. I was hoping he hadn’t re-forgotten me; wasn’t expecting him to have completely remembered me, be able to see me and…His face tinged pink as his smile widened. And tell me he loves me.
Albion was doing his usual of hiding behind a textbook, letting the morning sink in. Fen loves me, he smiled warmly. How did I ever forget him?! He placed the textbook back onto the table, squeezing Fenner’s hand gently under the desk.
The lessons passed as usual, and although Fenner couldn’t take notes, or risk looking like a haunted notebook and pen, he also never normally took notes and only ever slept, so him actually paying attention in class for once was enough to satisfy him.
At the end of the class, the girl to Fenner’s left reached out, intending to poke Albion. Only, Fenner was in the way. She poked Fenner in the ribs, causing him to grunt in surprise. “Huh?” The girl looked at Albion in confusion, as he faked a coughing fit. “Oops, sorry about that, gotta go!” Grabbing Fenner’s hand, he practically dragged him out the classroom.
“What was that??” He asked, inspecting Fenner through his left eye. “She poked me, wasn’t expecting it,” he complained in a hushed tone. Albion covered his mouth as he stifled a giggle. “Oh, sorry, I thought something bad had happened or something.”
Fenner glared at him. “Lets get to French; I can’t wait to sleep through it.” Albion continued giggling as he led them to their next class.
The day eventually ended, and the two realised they would need to part. “I don’t wanna leave you, just incase I wake up and don’t remember,” Albion said quietly. Fenner squeezed his hand gently. “You could stay over?”
Albion smiled. “I’ll text my mum. I can come to yours in the meantime though?” Fenner nodded gratefully, before texting his mother to let her know Albion was coming over. He was excited to tell her that Albion had remembered, but was scared to find out why.
—————
“No idea,” Margaret sipped her tea. Fenner and Albion looked between each other and back to the woman. “Sorry boys, but there’s never been a soulmate or anyone who could see the person with Nahreon blood whilst they’re invisible. Even I can’t see Fenny and I also have Nahreon blood.”
Fenner slipped down in his seat. “I can’t tell if this is a good thing or not. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great Albie can remember me, but what if this means something worse is going to happen?” Margaret shrugged. “Sweetie, we don’t know what will happen when the curse is finally broken. Albion remembers you, and I think that’s because you’re soulmates.”
Albion glanced at Fenner, who was squeezing his hand a little too tightly. “But you said soulmates won’t be needed once the curse is lifted,” Fenner said quietly. “It isn’t lifted yet though. I think it’s all about balance - you’re breaking the curse, so you won’t be forgotten. Therefore, soulmates aren’t needed. However, you haven’t broken it yet. You will have a soulmate for as long as you are cursed.”
“Oh,” Albion piped up. “So the thing with my eye, that’s like balancing it out - I shouldn’t have forgotten him, so instead I can see him?” He thought for a moment. “But when I touched him I remembered. So I can see and remember him?” Margaret placed her mug on the table.
“I don’t know boys, but things are changing. As Fenner learns to control his invisibility, he’ll keep going invisible more frequently, and for differing time periods. He’ll need a soulmate to remember him even more than usual. Eventually, the curse will be broken, and you’ll no longer be forgotten. You’ll still need to learn to control it though.”
“How do I even do that - not like I can google it.” Margaret looked at the seemingly empty chair in front of her. “I’m not sure my love, I’m hoping once the curse is gone it’ll just be a matter of practice.”
The two boys trawled their way upstairs unsure of what this meant for them. “I think we’re just paranoid - if I’m your soulmate, then I would remember anyway - just think of it like that?” Fenner nodded. “Yeah. Let’s hope you remember me next time this happens, too.”
