Fenner woke up, panic setting in. He sat up, running a hand through his hair as he glanced at his clock. 2am. Fuck. He had hoped to at least sleep through the night, but now he was awake he wasn’t sure if he’d ever get back to sleep. He glanced down at his hands, and when he noticed the absence of the grey line surrounding his body when invisible, he concluded he was back to normal, with a sigh of relief.
As he was pressed up against the wall with Albion’s arm around his waist, he realised he had no chance of getting up without waking the boy, so instead he lay back down. Scooting closer to his boyfriend, he wrapped his arms around Albion, breathing in his scent, which calmed him down somewhat. Closing his eyes briefly, he snapped them open again as soon as he felt Albion stir in his arms.
Albion glanced up at him. “Hi Fen,” he grinned as he snuggled in to Fenner’s chest. Sunlight was pouring through the window, it was 7am, and his clock was ringing incessantly. I went back to sleep?? He thought in surprise. Albion reached out a hand to smack the top of the clock, silencing it. “You ok there babe?” He asked, peering up at Fenner.
“Uh…yeah, just processing things.” Albion grinned into Fenner’s chest. “Glad I still remember you?” Fenner snorted, stroking Albion’s back soothingly. “Obviously, waking up with my boyfriend who doesn’t know who I am was not on my to-do list for today.” Albion giggled, “that’s a lie - no way does mister disorganised actually use to-do lists.”
Fenner groaned, sitting up and pushing his mouse-brown hair from his eyes. “Obviously I don’t use to-do lists, they’re for nerds.” Albion poked him in the ribs. “I’m offended, I’ll have you know I’m a pro when it comes to to-do lists.” Fenner rolled his eyes, “of course you are.”
The day passed as usual, with the caveat that Fenner had to reintroduce himself to everyone at school for the second time in three days.
“You’re the new kid?” The girl said to his left, who always poked him. “In a sense,” Fenner said as he sat in his usual seat. “Aww, now I can’t talk to Albie easily,” she pouted. Fenner rolled his eyes, “suck it up, this is my seat now,” and always was, he thought to himself. Poking girl grinned at him. “Ooh, a sassy little one, aren’t we?! I’m sure we’ll get on great.”
Fenner smiled slightly - she was always quite fun to talk to, because she really didn’t give two shits about…well, anything.
On their lunch break they climbed the flights of stairs to their favourite spot in the library, where they settled down for Fenner to nap and this time, Albie could draw him. Albie smiled at the thought; he’d wanted to do this since the first time he tagged along with Fenner to the library.
Fenner was curled up on the sofa cushions next to Albie, with his head resting on Albion’s thigh. He blushed slightly, quickly grabbing his sketchpad to begin adding in the outlines of the general shape, then took a photo of his boyfriend, so he could add shading and details once he got home. He smiled to himself, gently stroking Fenner’s soft hair before resuming his drawing.
After about half an hour, Fenner woke up, rolling on to his side to look at Albion. “Hey there gorgeous, enjoy your beauty sleep?” Fenner flicked him in the ribs, eliciting a giggle from his boyfriend. “Can I ask you about your eye?” Albion looked up from his drawing. Oh, I never actually told him my good news. “Sure. By the way, I can see faint outlines of big objects now, which is cool, and then like…you, when you’re…ya know.”
Fenner sat up. “Woah really? That’s big news. That’s really great,” he said, hugging Albion from the side. Albion grinned, patting Fenner’s thigh. “What did you want to ask me?” Fenner bit his lip, looking at his hands in his lap. “It’s about how it happened - it wasn’t because you were being clumsy, was it?” Albion’s breath froze in his throat.
“No.”
Fenner looked up at him. “I’m not going to make you tell me, it’s obviously very hard to talk about. But, I’m always here to listen, yeah?” Albion smiled gratefully, glancing around their floor of the library briefly before leaning in to peck him on the lips.
“I…I think I want to tell you about it, but not here because I’ll probably end up crying, and that’ll probably make you cry,” he laughed dryly. Fenner nodded solemnly, before leaning back against the sofa, putting his arm around Albion. “Lets go walk by the river after school?” Albion asked.
“Sounds like a plan,” Fenner said as they got up to go to their next lesson.
