The whispering hum of the helicopter's blade was masked by the night's cool breeze. Kris sat in the pilot's seat, focused on getting us to the drop point unnoticed. Squads A and B were already on the ground and squad C was in route. Our target was a cargo access tunnel at the south end of the facility.
Kris held us steady over the tunnel. Taking a deep breath I gave the signal and lead squad D to the ground, repelling from the helicopter with the cover of darkness. The black color of our uniforms and equipment made us invisible to cameras. When the team was clear of the lines Kris took off. She'd wait at the designated spot until we were ready for extraction.
Focusing on the mission, I lead my men into the tunnel. As expected there was no one at the gate. They were in the middle of their 2:00 AM switch over, which meant we had twenty minutes to get in and out before the guards returned. I set my watch.
We passed four doors in the tunnel before I stopped. "Breaker," I said as I nodded toward the fifth door. He instantly began his work. Breaker could pick any lock in under thirty seconds, rightfully earning his nickname.
The door opened and Eagle was the first to enter. He had a keen eye for detail. As an expert scout he could clear a room in under ten seconds, with or without light.
"Clear," he said.
I watched the rear as the rest of the men filed into the room. Closing the door behind me I urged them onward. We were in a large room that was made to look like it was for storage. Rows of metal selves were stacked high with boxes. All coated in a layer of dust, except for one shelf that sat along the rear wall. They really made it too easy to find.
Ruckus, and Noob worked together to pull the shelf from the wall, revealing the secret door behind it. Breaker slipped between the shelf and the door as soon as he had enough space. Eagle and I watched at the ready. Prepared for what may be on the other side of the door.
My heart raced and I gripped the handle of my gun firmly as the door swung open. The corridor behind it was dark. Eagle peered in before looking back at me with wide eyes.
"There's two doors at the end of the hallway," he said. Our intel had been wrong. There was only supposed to be one door. Looking at my watch I knew the other squads should be on their marks.
"Check in," I said through my ear piece intercom.
"Squad A ready." "Squad B ready." "Squad C ready." All of the squad leaders checked in as I lead my group down the dark corridor. The door on the left was newer than the one on the right. It's steel frame was polished and clean, while the door on the right had rusted all around the frame, hinges, and handles.
The newer door was likely the correct target, but I couldn't risk taking the wrong path and tanking the whole operation. We had to split up. Noob was the most senior delta force member on the team and the most qualified to lead.
"Breaker start with that door," I motioned to the one on the left and he went at it. "Noob you know the path. Ruckus and Eagle are with you. Breaker and I are splitting off."
"Yes sir," Noob replied as Breaker moved over to the second door.
"Squads prepare to move on my go," I said through the ear piece. I took a deep breath to steady myself as Breaker finished unlocking the second door. "Move out!"
Eagle, Ruckus, and Noob disappeared through their door. Leading with my gun I pushed through the door on the right. Rusted metal stairs took us down two levels before we hit another door. Breaker worked his magic and we slipped inside.
We found ourselves in a dimly lit hallway. Red lights lined the hall, stretching in both directions. With white painted concrete walls and rows of doors the facility had the same vibe as a deserted hospital, except it was way to clean. A yellow line was painted on the floor and lead to the right.
I glanced at my watch. We had five minutes to explore before we needed to get back. It definitely wasn't our target, but I was sure something very secretive was going on in that place. Deciding to follow the yellow line I jogged down the hall, looking into the rooms along the way. They were all empty.
When a red lined appeared on the floor a whirring sound caught my attention. My heart raced. The lights in the hall flickered down the way. Something was causing the power to surge. What the hell were the Germans up to?
Breaker covered my rear as we headed toward the sound. It got louder as we approached a brightly lit room. The white glow of the room flooded under the crack of the door, into the hallway.
Peering through the door's window my breath caught. I struggled to reconcile what I was seeing. A young boy was naked and strapped to a huge metal chair. Dozens of cables filled with a black liquid were connect to him. Most of them lined his spine, but there were a few on his arms and legs near his joints. He was writhing in pain.
My stomach twisted as I pulled back from the window. Breaker, seeing my face, raised a brow.
"What's in there?" he asked.
"Human experimentation," I stuttered as I spoke. The facility must have been a remnant of Nazi Germany, but I thought the experiments had been stopped when the camps were shut down. How could they still be experimenting on humans? Without the US knowing? My body trembled as I thought of it.
Peering back into the room I spotted a soldier standing near the boy's feet. He was middle aged and wore an SSTKB uniform, the death heads unit. My eyes widened when I notice the gun in his hands.
"Get this door open," I said.
Breaker started on the door as I continued to look through the window. My heart skipped a beat when the soldier pointed the gun at the boy. He looked like he was talking to him, but I couldn't hear it through the door. The whirring of the machine quieted as the lock on the door released.
"Nein!" the boy screamed. A single gunshot echoed throughout the room as I kicked open the door.
