“Hey, Kal?” I asked as we started walking again.
“Yes?”
“Why are you so…nice to me?”
“What do you mean?” he asked confused, head tilting over a little as a brow rose.
“I mean, you’re just so…kind and generous to a fault based on what I know about you, so…what made you want to be nice to me and like do this for me? Bringing me here, showing me around…being so kind to me? You don’t really…know me all too well or anything.”
“Well, I told you before that I am a collector, I like to collect things I find interesting…by the look in your eyes and how you acted, I could tell…that there was an interesting story behind the look in your eyes and…I was curious as to what it was, so I wanted to be your friend hoping that at a point I’d get to hear that interesting story.” He explained.
“So, you…want to like get to know me?”
“I do, you’re my friend, if it is a touchy subject you don’t want to talk about, its fine, patience is one of the very, very few virtues I have.” He said with a soft flutter of his fingers and smile.
“But what if the story isn’t interesting?”
“Then I could help you make a new more interesting story, plus I’m sure there are some other aspects about you or stories you have that are far, far more interesting.” As he said that, resting both hands atop his cane as we stood at the corner across the street, I leaned my head over to look behind him to see a dog walk into an alley holding a bag in its teeth and a second or two later a woman walked out holding the same bag and vanished down the street. “Something wrong?”
“I’m…I’m sure you would think I’m crazy if I told you.” I said as I raked my hand back through my hair, but he just laughed and smiled.
“Try me.”
“I am still…seeing weird things” I said as I rubbed my temples before sighing, “Every night at work I see weird things outside I had no idea how to explain, I swear I just saw a dog walk into an alley with a Gucci bag in its teeth then a woman walk out right afterwards holding the same bag in its teeth…Or the other night where I saw that person with arms that turned into bird wings…I could have sworn I saw a cat one night at work dragging a rat the size of a mastiff the other day…or a homeless guy who’s face split into an X shape and huge tentacles shot out and he swallowed a dog whole.” I said, my voice coming out as frantic, tired and in disbelief of myself, frantic hand movements and gestures as I explained making me look like a puppet being controlled by someone drunk and a touch of desperation filling my tone as I just wanted an answer as to why I’m seeing all of these things. Kal’s expression changed from amused and kind to something else, his smile remined, but his eyes softened and changed a little. “What do you think, do you think I’m crazy or something.” His expression was one of understanding and concern, his hands still softly folded atop his cane, the crisp fall afternoon breeze fluttering some stray locks of his auburn hair and catching the black velvet overcoat he had one over his blood colored suit, I could see the reflection of some of his tattoos in the tops of his rather pointed dress shoes.
“I do not think you are crazy nor do I think you’re just seeing things due to lack of sleep or anything of that sort.”
“Then what’s wrong with me then?”
“Nothing is wrong with you…you’re…special.”
“Special? What do you mean by that…You…you lost me a bit there.”
“You’ve always been able to see things like that, haven’t you?” he asked
“Can you see them too?”
“I do, but…for an entirely different reason. But please, have you always been able to see things like this?” He said, pausing to nod softly before a rather bittersweet smile formed on his face, a softer one without showing any of the blistering white teeth he has.
“Of course, sense I was a kid…but for as long as I’ve been able to see those weird things…I’ve had those endless nightmares.”
“And the heterochromia is real?”
“Yeah, I know there was a point where it was trend to wear mismatched colored contacts to fake it, but this is real…why do you ask?”
“Well, that is a sign as to how you are special, barely anyone like you is ever born.”
“What do you mean?” I asked, he laughed and sighed deeply before looking to meet my eyes.
“Now it’s my turn to say that you wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”
