Somebody was already playing music on the Headquarter's speakers when Cyrus walked in that night. Theo had texted and said he would be working late to wrap up stuff with Oak's arrest and to keep Spiro under control, so Cyrus took the opportunity to quickly arrange a last minute Hunters poker night. Usually they only played on every other Thursday, but he made an exception, especially since they hadn't gotten an opportunity to play at Kramer's. Poker night was always a fun way to celebrate a job well done. Felicia, Jordan, Martin, Kramer, Marcus, and Benny were already circled around their usual table, chips and drinks spread around as Kramer shuffled the cards.
"There's the boss!" Felicia announced, and Cyrus waved dramatically before sitting down in his usual seat, between Kramer and Benny, because Kramer always cheated. Felicia sat next to Jordan, the two of them sliding their chairs a little closer than necessary, while everyone inched slightly away from Martin. You never knew where he'd been, so it was better safe than sorry.
"Who let Kramer deal?" Cyrus questioned as cards were passed out, and the round casino owner chuckled.
"Well, Benny was late too so I thought I'd take up the job," He commented.
"Why are you dressed so fancy anyways, Ben?" Felicia asked, seeing as Benny was in a suit. He'd ditched the jacket, and his tie was undone and slung around his neck, but still. It wasn't the most comfortable outfit for poker.
"The policeman's ball is coming up, and I figured I'd try and break in the suit again. Didn't have time to change," Benny explained. "Plus I figured I'd give the boss a taste of what his husband's going to be ogling that night." Cyrus shoved at him, and Martin snickered.
"You still trust this guy to play pretend husband?" Martin asked.
"Well, he's a more believable option than you." Cyrus said. "And besides, you and Theo have fun, right?"
"Of course. Last time they had a Ball I pretended I was narcoleptic. Kept falling asleep and dropping stuff all night. Kept everybody else awake."
"I think we should switch things up sometime, just to keep the PD on their toes," Kramer suggested. "Next time there's an event, send Martin instead. Say he and Benny broke up."
"I'm in," Martin declared, waggling his eyebrows. Cyrus grinned.
"Sorry Mar, I don't really think you're Theo's type."
"Oh, I see how it is. Well, Jordan, it looks like you're up." Jordan choked on his drink and Benny started to laugh.
"Better idea," Cyrus insisted. "We'll send Felicia. That would really confuse them."
"Hey," Felicia said, mildly offended. "I'll have you know that I can play a very convincing man." They all started laughing, Marcus threw a couple chips into the pot, and the conversation changed as poker began.
"So when will we get to meet the sharpshooter?" Marcus questioned, checking his cards again as Mills counted his chips and raised. Martin scoffed.
"You're joking, right?" He asked, folding. "I've been in this gang for five years, and the only reason I even know what Theo looks like is because I nearly shot him once and Mossberg knocked my teeth out for it."
"I did warn you to pick a different target," Benny said.
"How was I supposed to know it was his husband?"
"If you don't know, then the answer is yes." Felicia insisted. "That's just what I've been going with up until today. Turns out the mysterious Theo is actually pretty cute though."
"Oh come on, he's more than just pretty cute," Cyrus grinned. "Thanks for helping him out with that guard though. He needed the hand, and I owe you one for it."
"No you don't. Tell him thanks for letting me get away. Mom would kill me if I ended up in jail."
"Would she still give us food if you got arrested?" Martin asked, always pointing out the more important question. Felicia rolled her eyes.
"I snagged a tray of leftover corned beef before I left. It's in the fridge behind the bar." The Hunters locked eyes, and everyone got up and ran for the fridge at once. Felicia stayed at the table, shaking her head. Her mother's cooking was better than cash to the rest of the gang. Cyrus often thought that woman could fry up literal dog shit and it would still be the best thing he'd ever eaten.
"So let me get this straight," Marcus said as they split up the food and headed back to the poker table before Kramer looked at all their cards. "It bothers none of you that you don't even know what the man you're supposed to die before harming looks like?"
"You're a very curious cat, Marcus," Cyrus said, his tone a bit warning. "I just don't show off pictures of Theo because he doesn't want me to. If any of you end up arrested, you'll end up in the interrogation room with him, and he doesn't want you to say something stupid since you recognize him."
"Makes sense," Marcus muttered, folding his cards.
"I call, Mossberg," Kramer declared. "Whatcha got?" Cyrus dropped his cards on the table.
"Flush."
"Damn," Kramer threw down his cards. "Three of a kind." Cyrus smirked and gathered up the chips from the pot as Benny collected the cards and started shuffling.
"Boss always wins the first hand," He commented, splitting the deck. "That's the rules of paradise."
"Paradise?" Felicia echoed sarcastically. "Disneyland is paradise, Ben. This place is just a lousy excuse for a conference room." She kicked her legs up on the table, tossing her red hair back so that it slapped Mills in the face. Jordan shoved her feet off, rolling his eyes.
"And what conference rooms have you been in that have alcohol?" He questioned.
"All the best ones, Jordy," She replied, smirking.
"Yeah, Jordy," Martin snickered. Mills scowled at him.
"Please just call me Mills like everybody else does."
"Everybody but me," Felicia went on.
"Everybody but Felicia," Mills echoed. "Because she's an annoying little shit like that." Felicia tilted her head back and laughed, an infectious sound that made the rest of them smile.
"You know, at heart," Cyrus started. "You're all just my obnoxious grown children."
"If we're your children, then Martin is definitely adopted!" Mills called.
"You mean I'm not blood related to any of you?" Martin clarified. "Oh thank god, that means there's hope for a normal life for me."
"You're in a gang, Martin. You threw out hope for a normal life when you signed the job contract," Benny objected.
"He's got you there," Cyrus agreed, catching his cards as Benny dealt them out.
"Normal is boring," Felicia said. "I'd take you weirdos any day over that."
"That makes two of us," Mills said quietly.
"Say," Marcus began. "Just out of curiosity, what do the police have on us anyway?"
"Awful lot of questions today, Marcus," Kramer said, studying the man a little closer.
"Hey, he's new. It's only natural that he'd have a few questions, right?" Cyrus cut in. Marcus nodded. "And, to answer the question, they've got next to nothing. Theo works our case with an idiot named Carter Spiro. As far as they know, I'm a straight guy using the alias Cyrus Mossberg to hide my real name, Jared Sage. I'm also secretly married to Felicia." Felicia choked on air and started coughing as Benny and Kramer burst out laughing. Mills went perfectly still, but cracked a smile when Felicia started laughing through her coughing fit.
"I can't breathe!" She stammered.
"That's the funniest thing I've heard in awhile," Kramer said, wiping away tears of laughter. "Keep going." Cyrus grinned.
"Well, apparently Mills is a vicious, violent murderer," He said dramatically.
"Seriously? The guy who cried when a bird flew into the headquarters window?" Martin started cracking up, and Felicia lost it again.
"Martin, they've got down, naturally. Typical weirdo living in his mom's basement at 40."
"Why do you all hate my mom's basement?" Martin cried, and they all laughed harder.
"Sadly, that's about it." Cyrus grinned.
"Really?" Marcus raised an eyebrow.
"Yep. Well, they also know a couple boring childhood details about me, they've got nothing on you and Benny, and all of us know just enough about Kramer that he could be from Area 51 for all we know."
"Who says I'm not?" Kramer grinned deviously.
"Just tell us your first name!"
"It's Kramer."
"Then what's your last name?"
"Kramer."
"Your full legal name is Kramer Kramer?"
"No, that'd be a stupid name."
"See what I mean?"
"My full legal name is Kramer Kramer Kramer. You forgot about the middle name."
They kept laughing, and Cyrus shook his head. This was why he loved poker night. It was a couple hours when they could forget about all the illegal gang crap and just be a normal bunch of friends for once. Normal wasn't something they got often in the Hunters. It wasn't something he got nearly enough of in his whole life. But on the rare occasion he had it, it was kinda nice to enjoy it.
