“I’m not sure why actually, but…I like talking to you. You’re kind, you actually like listen to what I’m saying, you’re super smart and funny…and you tell really fun stories.”
“Thank you.”
“Why’d you offer?”
“Well, from your eyes I instantly knew you were a Seer…but…I’ve always been good at reading people and finding the things that I like collecting. I could sense something on you that was…interesting aside from the Seer thing.”
“But…I don’t think I’m that interesting.”
“So you think, I think there may be more interesting things about you than you think there is.” He said as he started cooking.
“Are you sure you don’t need any help or something?”
“I’m perfectly fine.”
“Can…can I do like anything else? Like some sort of crazy magic spell or something?”
He laughed at that, the sound joining the sound of the cutting of crisp veggies, “Unfortunately, no…a Seer’s only ability and power is simply that…to see. All you can do is see through all of our illusions and glamours.”
“Wow…I find out that not only do all of these magical races exist and that I can see them, but there’s absolutely nothing I can do aside from see everyone.” I said, my voice dripping sarcasm making him laugh.
“Don’t worry, all of us use so little of our abilities that you’ll feel special around all of us.” He said as he tucked a few large pans into the wall mounted ovens. “You want anything to drink? Coffee, tea…glass of wine?”
“I’d love a cup of tea.”
“Caffeine or no?
“Caffeine”
“Black or green?”
“Do you have a giant assortment of tea?”
“Of course, you can go pick some out, to the left of the ovens, the very tall and narrow cabinet, it slides forward.” He said nodding towards it. Of course, there was also one of those huge wall mounted espresso machines. I walked over with Gellert’s nose intensely sniffing me to the point it was pushed into the back of my knee at all times.
At about five-ish, there was a loud doorbell sound and Kal stood up from the couch, setting his glass of wine on the coffee table as he walked across the room before pushing a button on the wall beside his door. The smell of the dinner would have been enough to convince anyone to join in for the party, the sun was starting to set turning the sky a rich wash of oranges, yellows and reds as all of the buildings lights flickered on, the lights that Kal had across the grounds of his apartment flickered on from being solar powered. Almost all of the major lights of the apartment were dimmed, the fireplace was lit, electrical of course, but still had the sound of crackling popping flames, dozens of candles across the great-room were lit and there were a bundles of candles across the dining table which was now probably laid out across the glass top with places for everyone. Gellert was asleep on a loveseat taking up the entire thing. Soft classical music was playing making the apartment even grander feeling and that much more overshadowing with its lavishness. There were sections in the roof that were glass filling the apartment with a few beams of ivory moonlight that was bounced and spread across the marble and stainless steel. The smell of the food mixed with fall scented candles was heavenly and intense.
“Hey guys, one second…I’ll send the elevator down.” He said before hitting another button.
“I was wondering how your front door worked.”
“Doorbell is at the single door in the lobby, I can hit a button to unlock it from here and send the elevator down for them as well.”
“Impressive.”
“Its how the building had it before I moved in here.”
“How long have you been in New York?”
“…about sense ’54.” He said as he walked past grabbing his wine.
“Wow”
“Yeah, I used to live in the Lower East Side for a while before I moved here about a decade back.” he added as he walked back into the kitchen to hit a few buttons then turned sharply on his heel and rushed back over to the double doors as there was a frantic knocking sound at it. “Hey, guys!” he called out.
“KAL!” a chorus of voices echoed out.
“Come on, come on, dinner’s almost ready and I’ve got a friend to introduce all of you to.”
