TW: mentions of being misgendered, I'm not sure if this brings back bad memories for anyone, so just making sure I'm not being inconsiderate here
Yronden
It took about three days to reach the Void location. Yronden was restless, he wanted to know who fate would choose over him. He had the brains, and the influence to be the perfect sleeper, so why hadn’t he been chosen. Sure he was overweight, but he figured he had a year to work it off and be the fit fighter destiny wanted. So, what guy was better than him? Did he come from the Overlord location? Did he already know his destiny and go to the Void location?
Maybe this was the man who was going to sweep him off his feet, a big beautiful beast who was going to save the world, and Yronden was going to be right there by his side. He could practically taste the fame that was coming to him. He looked over at Wesryn. Hopefully, they would be talented enough to teach his new man. Yronden remembered three days ago when he referred to Wesryn as a female, they almost took off his head, while screaming in his face about being non-binary. There was also a threat of removing his insides and shoving them in his eye sockets if he made the mistake again. It scared the hell out of Yronden, and he pretended that he played it off when it happened. In reality, he was scared shitless and was ready to beg for forgiveness. He looked at his new acquaintance in curiosity.
Wesryn
“So Wesryn, I know this is a touchy subject for you and all, but since we’re companions now, I have a right to know, why is your gender a reason you blow up?” Wesryn scoffed, knowing that their reasoning was personal enough that they didn't want to share, but it didn't stop the memories from enveloping them.
“I am non-binary, I just don't feel like either a man or a woman. My pronouns are they/them.” It was said with complete conviction, but no other emotion because Wesryn knew that was the only way to get their father’s respect. He just grunted in acknowledgement. Wesryn knew no one would respect their pronouns until they proved themself as the best fighter. So they trained for years, while enduring being hurt and mis-gendered. They had come out to the community as soon as they came out to their father. There was no need to come out to their mother, she had disappeared a long time ago. They came out to their community because in the long run, they would gain more respect. If they had come out after being the best fighter, some would harbor feelings that they were a coward, and couldn’t handle the challenge of being themself.
So, they came out and got beaten everyday. That didn't bother them because the only way they were going to be better was learning from the losses. The fact they were mis-gendered for years while trying to become the best hurt. Even their father mis-gendered them, publicly and privately. If it was up to Wesryn, their father would have only done it publicly, and in private he would show his support for his child, but that didn't happen. It hurt Wesryn’s spirit more than anything else did.
They became the best fighter and even fought their father, after that he started using their correct pronouns. It was too late, however, they already felt the wedge in their bond. Now they were very touchy about their pronouns, and once the sleeper and them made the world safe, Wesryn was going to make sure the world respected pronouns. They were going to start with the Protector location, seeing as it was the least bigoted, and the place they have the most influence. Then they would start the ripple that would eventually change the world for the better.
Note: When I explained the locations, I said the Protector location was the least bigoted. This is only because if someone proves themselves to others, then they aren't subjected to bigotry. I'm not saying Protector location citizens are not prejudiced just that they're is a chance to stop bein bullied, other than having important parental figures. Also, Yronden hasn't been bullied for his sexual orientation because no one outside his family knows. They pay to keep any 'gay' attributes of their son from being noticed.
