Darren met up with Chantel after dusk. The plan for the two of them: They meet the Rise of Light near where the old Bay Side Square area is. Darren’s heart dropped whenever he was near that abandoned old Bay Side Square neighborhood; it was the only way for the Supernaturals to get to Roseland, undetected. He still remembered the smell of the fire from hell from that night. Shaking his head to focus, Darren took a piece of paper out of his pocket and opened it up. The paper has a message:
Crossover Permit #2463
Name: Darren Cain Cross
Supernatural Race: Magic User
Reason for crossover: Visiting-Personal Travel
Darren reminded the times that both Amelia and his aunt, Michelle told him this. Crossover Permits were mandatory for visiting outside of the Supernatural towns and into them. The Supernatural town approved these permits. However, the process is often lengthy and extensive. Since Darren lived in an anchor town, he could not just go to local town hall to get them.
Instead, all the paperwork was done through a special secret headquarters, reserved for Supernaturals who lived in Clare Point View. Every anchor town had them, making the process more annoying for anyone, who just wants to spend a day trip to, at least, one Supernatural town. However, this was all necessary since it kept Outsiders from traveling into Supernatural towns. Got to keep this secrecy thing alive somehow. Thankfully, The Rise of Light helped Darren get his permit, and Chantel, and everyone else, who were traveling to Roseland tonight.
Arriving at the fence on the border of the old, abandoned neighborhood, he watched Chantel standing next to Roland and two other people: A young man and woman. Darren glared at Roland; he did not like this guy and that has not changed since the last time meeting him. There are more people coming over to the meeting spot. Making a mental headcount of them, Darren’s eyes raised when he saw Leticia walking over with her brother! Not a little while longer, one of the ROL recruitment higher members, Georgia Benchet arrived at the meeting place.
Darren watched Georgia looking around, making sure no one was watching or following her. Once the coast was clear, she gave Darren and the group instructions to enter the forest to make their journey. Deep into the forest, the group walked closely to Georgia, not making a sound. Darren observed the clear night sky to look at the stars while he walked over a tree branch after another one. The night looked so beautiful and it is a shame that Darren did not have the time to admire its beauty.
Soon, the group stopped to see a fair-skinned, red-haired young girl, standing in the middle of their path. Darren titled his head in confusion at the sight of a little girl in the woods during this time of night.
“Um, little girl? Aren’t you supposed to be at home or something? It’s late!” Darren said, pointing at the little girl.
A young girl like her should not even be out this late. Let alone be walking around in the woods at the dark night.
Roland waved his hand to explain to the group what was going on, “This girl is with us. She is our guide and helps us from time to-time.”
This little girl did not seem like an ordinary little girl, who glared at the group with her serious, green eyes. Despite being used to unordinary stuff, Darren, seeing a serious little girl working with a group of grown adults was just not normal.
“Ah, Valerie! Right on time. Don’t be worried everyone! She lives here and will lead us to the permit entry area at Mount Ridge Bridge Mountain. This is where Roland and I will leave you. Raphael and Valerie will take it from here.” Georgia explained.
“Wait, you’re leaving us with this little girl?! Shouldn’t this girl be at home playing with her dolls or something?” Darren heard Leticia’s loud voice in the far back of the group.
The girl, Valerie, raised her wand at them and spoke in a crisp voice, “I do not play with silly dolls, this magic wand is my only toy. I am more mature than you, loudmouth.”
As Darren heard Valerie’s voice, he felt shivers up his spine on how emotionless this girl sounded. There were no further complaints. Zipping up her black jacket, she directed the group to part from Georgia and Roland. As the group moved, Darren saw Chantel held back to stay with Georgia and Roland. After finishing whatever Chantel had to do, Darren watched Chantel running up to him, catching up with the rest of the group.
Darren asked Chantel, as they hiked up the large hill to the mountain, “What was that about?”
Chantel shook her head and sighed, “It’s nothing...”
When the group finally arrived at the place they needed to be, there was a wooden, bordered up tunnel entrance into the mountain. Looking down at the ground, road tracks coming from inside the battered tunnel. The tunnel was large enough to fit a human or a car. Valerie hurried ahead of them and went through into the tunnel! Most of the group’s wide eyes blinked in confusion when Valerie did that, but not Darren or Leticia’s brother, Raphael.
“How the heck did that girl walk in through that! Was that magic, Darren?” Chantel whispered to him as he nodded in response.
“My aunt told me before that there was an entrance to Roseland, where it is enchanted by magic. It was a way to deter Outsiders from getting into the town. I guess all we need to do is to walk into it, we’ll pass through like Valerie did.” Darren explained.
“Oh my gosh, this is nuts! So we walk into it, we won’t get hit by the wood?!” Leticia’s loud voice boomed when people started to shish her.
“Okay, everyone! Get in line. We don’t have any time to waste! Some of you have to wait a bit as there is something I need to give you.” Raphael called the group to single file, so they could enter the tunnel quickly.
One by one, all the people in the group passed through the barrier entrance. Darren had to wait a little longer for Chantel to come over. He wondered why Raphael was holding some members of the group up, even Leticia was held back too. Darren turned his attention to the tunnel surroundings: The tunnel looked semi-abandoned, because of the lack of lighting and the cracks in the concrete road from years of no management.
He glanced over to see two people: A man and woman wearing police uniforms, standing near rectangular, metal doorways that looked like metal detectors. Darren guessed that all they needed to do is go through them.
“I see it, though Raphael will take care of this. Be careful out there, everyone. I need to go back to my family.” Valerie walked back to the barrier to return to the outside, leaving them.
Darren still wondered why so many of the people leading them were leaving them on their journey to Roseland, but he chalked that up as he is one of the first people to walk through the metal detector. Giving the man his permit form, the man nodded and read the form.
“Please put your items in this basket before going through here, sir.” The man ordered Darren, showing him a small black basket.
Darren removed everything he had out of his pocket, including his trusty wand. Moving through the detector and a voice boomed loudly: “Approved for admission!”
The same sound was the same on the other metal detector that Chantel went though. One by one, all the group members went through and get their things after passing the admission entrance. After that process, the group continued to trek through the tunnel as, at the end, is another forest! Darren sulked to himself as he couldn’t take anymore hiking. This was feeling like summer camp all over again!
“Not to worry. We’re going through a shortcut through here. Oh, ignore the howls.” Raphael pushed the group on as they heard wolves, howling!
This spooked the group but Darren remained unfazed by the howling. He knew about the howls and where they came from. Feeling someone grabbing his arm, Chantel stayed close by him as the group continued hiking.
“There are so many wolves howling tonight. Some howls sounded human like.” Chantel said.
“They are werewolves. My coven taught me about them and yeah, we need to avoid being detected by them.” Darren ignored the sounds of the howls, still keeping Chantel close to him.
“Werewolves?! I don’t have to worry about them! I’m wearing a silver necklace and earrings. At least me being fashionable would keep me safe. That will show the beasts!” Leticia exclaimed in confidence as she was still walking close by her brother.
“With that loud voice of hers, I wouldn’t be surprised she would be the first one out of all of us to get attacked.” Chantel muttered to Darren.
It did not take long for the group to get out of the forest and arrive at civilization at last. Darren’s eyes were filled with wonder; there were street lights, beautiful buildings, and some cars driving through the street. He looked up at the night sky to see people flying on broomsticks. Darren even saw humans that had animal characteristics walking down the street. The town looked like it was a night on Halloween.
The entire group stood on the sidewalk where there were two white vans waiting for them. Chantel, Raphael, Leticia, and Darren went in one van, while the other people went into the other. When everyone was accounted for, the vans drove into the city while Darren, Chantel, and Leticia continued to watch in amazement. Darren could not believe it. This was the town that Leticia, Chantel, and him wanted to prove was real since they were kids.
Now they are here, it wasn’t anything like the rumors they thought. To Darren’s view, this was significantly better than the stories that his aunt told him from when he was younger. This town was magical. Absolutely magical.
