"Can I just crash at yours?" I leaned on the threshold of Alex's front door as she was a step inside. We just got back from our day out, it was 10:45, and Alex's house was closer to where we went than mine.
"Trust me, you don't want to be here tonight. My cousins are visiting, and one of them brought her boyfriend, who she's constantly making out with." Alex sighed and leaned against the other side of the threshold. I wasn't wearing my sunglasses anymore as it was dark, but I tilted my head and raised an eyebrow at her.
"Come to mine, then." I shrugged.
"Let me ask, come in." I walked in with Alex and said hi to her mom before she asked. "Can I spend the night at Callie's?"
"Yeah, sure, just don't forget your charger." She smiled at us then we left, going to Alex's room. We opened the door, but got a flash of her cousin and her boyfriend making out, and shut it again.
"I can just use a charger that you have, right?"
"Totally. Let's go." We left to my house.
***
"Mom?"
"Yeah, Callie?" My mom called out from the kitchen. We walked over to her.
"Alex can stay over, right?" My mom looked up from the strawberries she was cutting up. If there's one thing you should know about my mom, it isn't about her mismatching blue and brown eyes, it's that she always wears lipstick in colors it isn't normal in. Currently, it was yellow, matching a hair chip in her hair with the rest braided.
"Yeah, of course. If May is up for it I'm fine with you guys staying home tomorrow, it being Friday and all. Though," My mom looked up at the time, it now being 11. "Friday is technically in an hour. Go to bed, girls. You should get some sleep in case May doesn't want Alex staying home." Alex and I agreed and went to my room, me changing into my pajamas and Alex in some of mine.
"So, just making sure I got it all right, I'm allowed to ask about your soulmate as long as you can ask about mine?" Alex asked as we sat on my queen bed.
"Yeah, of course." I half shrugged.
"So, you're soulmate's a girl, right? Does your mom know yet?"
"Yes and no, she doesn't I haven't told her." I rubbed my left upper arm. "Honestly, I'm super nervous to. I mean, there's not many same-sex soulmates that you hear about." Alex inclined her head.
"That is true, but she's never spoken bad about this kind of stuff."
"Yeah, well, that's a conversation for another night." I sharply inhaled, letting it out in a sigh, and leaned against the headboard. I turned on my phone and added a clock to the home screen for London time, it saying it was 7:07 there, 11:07 here. "Actually, do you know what time UK schools start? Actually, never mind, Harper doesn't have school tomorrow. Or, technically, today for her. Wow, time zones are confusing." Despite it being late already, I decided to send Harper a message on Skype that said, "Hey, I know it's late here and early there, but send me a message when you wake up, maybe?"
"We should probably sleep. You said you had a charger for me?" Alex said.
"Oh, yeah. It's downstairs, let me grab it." I stood up and went downstairs, leaving my phone on my bed with Alex.
"I thought I told you to go to sleep?" My mom asked, smiling at me, then plopping a strawberry piece into her mouth.
"Yeah, yeah," I joked with her. "I'm just grabbing a charger for Alex." I stuck out my tongue at my mom. If you didn't notice, my mom is at least a little nocturnal. She works at home, and the website she works for doesn't really care what time she works, as long as she works her certain hours on her scheduled days, so she often stays up late, like now, and just works at night.
"Well, you wanna bring a plate of chopped strawberries up? I'll call May, and I figured you wouldn't actu-"
"Callie! Alex ran down the stairs, out of breath. She had taken her hair out of it's usual twin buns so it was all in front of her face. She moved it with her arm. "Harper messaged!"
"Oh!" I ran over and dragged her back upstairs to my room, my phone. I jumped on my bed and unlocked my phone, seeing her reply.
"Hi! I hope you're not asleep? You're probably sleep by now, who am I kidding, I wish I was late last night. Anyway, I decided to reply either way, as you wished. :)"
I smiled and replied, "Hello! I'm not asleep (yet). Alex and I are having a sleepover, so we're just chilling, but I gotta talk to my mom real quick, so brb." I put my phone down then ran back to the kitchen.
"So," my mom dragged out. "Who's this 'Harper'?" She held out the bowl of strawberries and the charger I forgot.
"Just... An online someone." I reached for them, but she pulled them out of reach.
"What, are you catfishing, Callie, like mom used to?" We both looked to the door at who spoke and saw my younger sister, Scarlett. My mom immediately gave me the bowl and charger, now distracted with Scar.
"Young lady, where have you been all night! I've texted, called-" And with that I went back to my room.
"Did Harper reply?" I asked Alex as I closed my door with my foot and placed the bowl on the bed, handing Alex the charger.
"Uh," Alex said after shoving her face with strawberry pieces. I rolled my eyes with a smile and grabbed my phone away from her and unlocked it.
"Oh, okay." Her message read, before another message was sent after it, "Wait, it's Thursday night there, right? Why are you guys having a sleepover, you have school tomorrow, don't you??"
"School we video chat Harper so it's easier?" I asked Alex out loud.
"Well, have you before?" Alex tilted her head.
"Actually, no." I stuck out my tongue at her. "We recently just got Skype, we haven't had the chance." I rubbed my arm again.
"Well, in that case, no. Your first video call should be private, and special, and not with me."
"Okay, that's probably true." I yawned as I replied to Harper, explaining the plan.
"Maybe we should sleep, because the sooner we go to sleep, the sooner we wake up, and the sooner I can leave you and Harper to video chat. Say goodnight to your soulmate while I do mine then we can sleep." Alex shoved me off the bed and I laughed, reaching for a marker from my desk.
"I thought you had his number?" I asked, typing to Harper.
"You're right, I don't want to wake him up if he's asleep, I'll just text him." Alex put the marker back down and then turned on her phone. I finished texting Harper, plugged my phone in, then jumped back onto my bed just as Alex turned off her phone. Alex plugged her phone in across the room and turned off the light, then joined me.
