I wake up with a start as my head hits the wall. I look out the window at the bright clouds, shining like the sun. I look in the other direction, avoiding the blinding light. Next to me, a woman sits with her baby, and next to her sits a man, probably about 60 years old. A flight attendant pops into view and asks in a cheerful voice, "Would you like anything to eat or drink?" I haven't had anything to eat since breakfast, so when the woman next to me has finished her order, I ask for a ginger ale and a packet of salt and vinegar crisps. I then spend the rest of the flight chatting with Freya- I found out that was the name of the woman with the baby- and munching on my crisps. About two hours later, I look out of the window to see my beautiful island home- Saint Lucia. The water has never looked so clear, the grass has never looked so green, the people have never looked so happy. This is where I grew up, where my family lives and has for generations. I love it here. it is my favourite place in the world.
I reach the cabin at about 10:00pm. I am going to be seriously jetlagged. It is a small place- one bedroom one bathroom, but it is perfect for me. The outside is a navy blue colour, with a deck surrounding it. It is in a sort of secluded part of the island, directly on the beach. I walk on to the terrace and follow it round to the back of the house, which is above the water. Down some steps, I even have my own little mini-harbor. inside, There is a small living room and kitchen area, and a bathroom. Upstairs, in the loft, there is a bedroom and a tiny balcony. The landlord gives me my keys and leaves. I start to unpack my things.
When I'm done unpacking- it's probably about 11:30- I take out my laptop and call Emily. She picks up immediately, and I smile at the sight of her fiery ginger hair and freckles. "So how is it?" she says excitedly. "It's great," I reply, "It's so nice to be back here." She grins and says, "Is the house nice? I know it looked tiny on the pictures but I'm sure it's bigger in real life." I laugh, " Nope, it's exactly the same as the pictures, but I love it!" I give her a quick tour, and we laugh and chat for a while until she has to go to work. We say goodbye and she hangs up. I close my computer, place it on the bedside table and crawl into bed.
