Wystan looked like he was going to faint, the colour had been washed from his face, his lip quivering and hands trembling. “Wystan, Wystan, listen to me. It's a time fracture. You're fine. You need to walk towards me now.” A time fracture is something the boys had only ever heard about. It's where the law's of time rapidly change. Anything it passes through can be riffled by aging, turn apart by time, or have the clock turned back on yourself until you are zapped out of existence. They are near impossible to see until you're stuck in the middle of them, and once you're in them. They can be near impossible to escape. You could very quickly find yourself trapped in a loop, or aged before your eyes and turned to ash.
Wystan couldn't focus on Rui's voice, he instead looked in horror as Rui's face flickered between ages. The walls looked like they were closing in around them both as the paint began to peel from the walls and ceiling falling down around them, plants and vines began to grow through the floor boards and in through the windows. “THE DOORS LOCKED” Aryan screamed down the hallway. Of course, the door must have aged back to a time before they had busted its lock. “Break a FUCKING WINDOW THEN!!!” Yelled Rui. But the sound of glass smashing over and over and over again filled them all with dread.
Caeden watched as the glass shards picked themselves up off the ground and reformed a solid window. Only to shatter back onto the ground, over and over again. They were trapped. Rui reached in across the room and grabbed Wystan's hand pulling him back down into the hallway and towards the front door. But he could barely walk, his body had gone into shock. The holes in Wystan's chest began to disappear as they made it closer to the door. The brothers were violently hitting and kicking it. Wystan leaned up against a nearby wall and Rui began prying the door with his shiv, he had busted the lock with it earlier, but he couldn't focus to hear the blade catch the door's bolt in amongst the panic and crumpling house around them. Wystan's screams started again and he fell to the ground. He reached out grabbing a hold of Caeden's ankle, trying to pull himself closer to them. Caeden and Aryan then saw what Wystan was screaming for.
Wystan's leg was infested with maggots. Dead flesh surrounded what moments before was healthy skin and muscle tissue. His leg was rotting before their eyes and began to climb further and further up his leg. His face and arms began changing and aging. Caeden looked down Wystan's hand wrapped firmly around his ankle. He saw his skin quickly shift in age and an overwhelming pain took control of his body. “LET GO!” He screamed falling to the ground. “YOU'RE HURTING ME,” panicked and scared he started trying to kick Wystan away from the hold he had him. “LET GO!!” Caeden was in a panic and in serious trouble.
“HELP ME PLEASE!” Tears covered Wystan's face as he held on for dear life. Caeden didn't have much longer before he too was to be consumed, he could feel the pain creeping up to his knee, he almost couldn't kick anymore as the pain was too overwhelming.
Aryan quickly grabbed the shiv out of Rui's hand and leapt in between Wystan and his brother, stabbing Wystan over and over in a fury to get him to break his hold on his brother. Caeden scurried back the second the grip on his leg was loosened.
The stab marks left in Wystan's now resembled exactly what Rui had seen moments earlier. Time had caught up.
Everything had stopped shifting and the night went still. Caeden had his head buried to Aryan's chest, shielding him in his arms as they lay pressed against the far wall. Rui looked at Wystan's now lifeless body. His leg was back to normal, but the stab wounds remained. Rui's hands now shaking from shock, he picked up the shiv wiping it clean on the curtain, his eyes still fixated on Wystan's body.
The room was silent of all but the muffled sound of Caeden sobbing into Aryan's arms.
“We need to go... and we can't tell anyone about this, ok?”
“O....k.” Caeden says between the breaths of his cries. But Aryan just continued to stare the body of his friend.
And at the first life he'll ever take.
