The Girl Who Rang the Doorbell

Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Oct 14, 2020

I peeked through the peephole, waiting to see the darkness of an empty corridor, because of the time it took me to arrive.

But on the other side, a presence prevented the lights from resting.

These lights illuminated a serious face. Serious, but ready to smile at any moment. That was, undoubtedly, a professional face.

This professional face belonged to a very well-dressed girl, who held a clipboard in her right hand, and in her left hand a metal pen, which elegantly reflected the lighting that hit it.

I couldn't really make out which company she belonged to, but I instantly realized why she was here. She either wanted to sell me something, or she wanted to make me buy something. Actually, these two should be the same thing, except they're not.

Anyway, I really don't feel like starting a trade battle here, specially when I didn't even finnish the boss battle in the game I just paused.

Seriously, it's useless! I say I don't want anything, but for them that means "show me more options". No, I don't want more options! I want you to get out of my face!

And then they say that my neighbour Martha has purchased their services, and is very satisfied with it, as if that's going to make me buy it... Seriously!? I don't even know who Martha is! I bet that "neighbour" for them isn't someone living in this building or even neighborhood, but on the next city. What a joke!-

*bzzzt*

I felt a vibration on my wrist. It was my smartwatch, warning me about my heartbeat being too fast. Yeah I know, fancy stuff.

But it's true that I was there getting worked up for nothing.

I simply don't open the door.

That's it.

It's not like I have the obligation to do it.

Because I live right in the center of the city, these salespeople are a regular sight. I think I see them more than the postman. Almost every week I have to tell them that my parents aren't interested, they don't need to come again, I don't care, whatever...

I peeked through the door again. She was standing there, still.

Too bad dear, no one's home. Bye.

When a stranger rings your doorbell, do you usually open it?
In this short story, we follow the narrator, a relatively egocentric and very much spoiled young man, who doesn't want to open the door to a woman who appears to be doing door to door sales.

About one hour after she rang the bell, he decides to check the door again, and is surprised to see that the girl is still there, immersed in the silence of an empty corridor.

He asks himself if she has been standing there all this time, and starts wondering: Is it best to ignore her again, or just open the door for once?

Read the funny thoughts and scary moments the protagonist lives in this very weird afternoon of his life.

I translated the story to english, and this is the first time I'm doing this, so if you find any mistake, let me know.

This is just a short story, but still, it's my first story. Hope you enjoy!
