The Girl Who Rang the Doorbell

Chapter 5.2 - Not Open

Chapter 5.2 - Not Open

Oct 24, 2020

I still didn't really know what do to, but there's no time to waste. What I'm going to do is... not open the door!

Trying to remain as silent as possible, I went back to my room to keep playing my game. But I couldn't focus anymore. I went to the door again to check if she was still there, and yes, there she was.

I ended up turning off the game, and lying on the bed for a while, looking at the ceiling. That was a ceiling known to me.

Then I got up, and looked at the notebooks scattered on the desk. I had homework to do.

I picked up the notebooks, and stuffed them in my backpack. Now I don't anymore.

I laid down in my bed again, and spent the rest of the afternoon reading web comics.

Sometimes I would get up to peek through the peephole, and for what it seems, she stayed there all afternoon, without moving, without making a single noise, without ringing the doorbell again.

I started to think she was just a doll someone put in front of the door, but I could definitively see her breathing.

All this scared me a bit, I'm not going to lie. I wondered if I should call the police... But what would I tell them? That I have a mummy in front of my door? Because that's how she'd be by the time they arrived here. If they even did.

The best thing to do might be to wait for my parents - I concluded, and went back to my room.

But, my parents didn't come back.

Well, at least until very late at night.

When I heard them getting home, I ran to the front door to see if the girl was still there. I think the last time I checked was about an hour ago, and she was still here then.

But now it looks like she's gone. I asked my parents if they saw a woman that looks like her on their way here, but they said they didn't see anyone inside or outside this building. They also said they were very tired, and asked me to let them rest, so I went back to my room, and went to sleep.

When a stranger rings your doorbell, do you usually open it?
In this short story, we follow the narrator, a relatively egocentric and very much spoiled young man, who doesn't want to open the door to a woman who appears to be doing door to door sales.

About one hour after she rang the bell, he decides to check the door again, and is surprised to see that the girl is still there, immersed in the silence of an empty corridor.

He asks himself if she has been standing there all this time, and starts wondering: Is it best to ignore her again, or just open the door for once?

Read the funny thoughts and scary moments the protagonist lives in this very weird afternoon of his life.
