The Girl Who Rang the Doorbell

Chapter 6.2 - Not Open

Chapter 6.2 - Not Open

Oct 24, 2020

It's been 1 month since that day. That girl who rang the doorbell and froze in front of the door for hours - I never saw her again.

Sometimes I wonder if I should have opened the door right away, or just done something else... It's just that, everything was so unusual... But, I think what I chose to do was also reasonable.

From time to time, sales people show up in here, like usual. Whenever the doorbell rings, I look at the hall with the feeling that it could be that girl who's on the other side.

But of course, it's always other people. Of course, I still don't open the door for them. And of course, one day the one who rang the bell was that girl again. Unbelievable.

One afternoon, I heard the bell and went to check who it was. As I was in the kitchen preparing some snacks, and the kitchen was close to the door, it didn't take me long to arrive.

When I peeked through the peephole, waiting to see some salesman I would ignore, I saw someone I couldn't disregard. It was her. And she was exactly the same as before - very serious and completely still.

I immediately moved away from the door. Am I imagining things? I can't believe this!

I slowly got closer, trying not to make a sound, and looked into the corridor again.

There was no one there.

While I was still looking, the lights went out, and the silence remained the same. Ok... What was that? She went from standing for hours in front of the door, to ringing and vanishing right away? Or did I just see things? But, I'm sure the doorbel rang!

Very quickly, I opened the door to see what was going on. This time, not giving you the chance to choose.

As soon as I opened it and put a foot in the hall, all the lights went on. Well, they're motion lights so that's normal.

I looked one way and then the other. I stayed like that for a few seconds, wondering about what just happened, when I heard a muffled sound.

I'm not sure how to describe it. It sounded a bit strange. A shout? A cry? A laugh?

It seemed to come from afar, but at the same time from upclose.

That should be my neighbors, right? And I thought that the sound insulation here was top notch... Or is it that girl? I can't even tell where this is coming from... Ah, the sound stopped

And again, total silence. Well... Guess that's what this was.

I was going to go back inside, now that I saw that there is nothing abnormal, when I noticed something definitely not normal.

On the door of our apartment, there were small scratches. They looked like numbers, so probably... a phone number? But there were only 6 digits. The seventh was only half written, so it could be either a 0 or a 6. Then there was a horizontal line of about 3 centimeters, which started at the bottom of this last number.

Now, this certainly wasn't here before, so we have a big problem! If my parents see the door scratched like that, they will surely say that I have something to do with it, and I don't know anything!

Seriously, what's the point of walking around scratching other people's doors!? The neighbors' seemed to have nothing. Why did they scratch ours and not theirs? Was it that strange girl? But I didn't hear the door being scratched... Well, at least I think I didn't, I was close to it after all...

Anyway, I tried to rub the scratches, but that did almost nothing.

Well, I just hope my parents understand that I have nothing to do with this.

I went back inside, sat on the couch, and kept watching TV.

When a stranger rings your doorbell, do you usually open it?
In this short story, we follow the narrator, a relatively egocentric and very much spoiled young man, who doesn't want to open the door to a woman who appears to be doing door to door sales.

About one hour after she rang the bell, he decides to check the door again, and is surprised to see that the girl is still there, immersed in the silence of an empty corridor.

He asks himself if she has been standing there all this time, and starts wondering: Is it best to ignore her again, or just open the door for once?

Read the funny thoughts and scary moments the protagonist lives in this very weird afternoon of his life.
