Her eyes shifted uneasily over the dunes. Serpents of sand and wind snaked their way over the deserts endless undulations. A slight disturbance in the depths caused a sand flow to reveal what she sought. It was a hard stone buttress much at odds with its fluid surroundings. Her eyes narrowed in well cultivated suspicion below her heavy wrappings, it couldn't be this easy.
After searching fruitlessly for so long the uncaring tides of the Zindicar would not reveal itself so frivolously. Save for a frailty of the mind she could think of no other explanation to her sudden stroke of luck, that is if she had believed in luck. The Sands drooled down rough hewn columns to betray a single passageway leading beneath the sun smothered surface.
Carefully she placed each step, the sand choked hallway could still foster any manner of safeguards antagonistic to her cause. The walls and floor smoothed the further she ventured down this central path while still maintaining the shape and form of the chaotic desert currents. Nothing was saved from the scouring sands, not even in this ancient site of worship. Surely there were carvings here once, detailing the absolute truths these people abdicated long ago.
The winding paths led to a heart chamber placed at the confluence of each arterial path. Its concentric tiered steps fled deep into a shadowed point far beneath where her eye could penetrate. This place had moored itself at the soul of the sands, a constant amongst swirling uncertainty. A trickle of debris rained from the ceiling, breaking her stream of consciousness. It seemed to be drawn into the central pit however many leagues beneath her feet. Its disappearance from sight announced its entrance into the air as a reedy exhalation, a dying breath.
There...there from the darkness crept another sound, fingernails scraping against distant sandstone. She strained to catch a glimpse of the disturbance only to tense when the ghost of some asphyxiated breath caressed her neck. An arid, tortured sound sighed into her ear.
"Deserters always find their way home."
