- Is that the last one?
-Yes.
-Ready. Work finished, now we just have to wait.
I nodded.
- Do you think it was okay to charge $ 1,000 pesos?
- Are you kidding me? You should have charged double.
I smiled and went to my locker. When I opened it, three letters fell, I was surprised and quickly picked them up to later put them in my bag. I got my books and walked to the parking lot where I said goodbye to Lia who had to go to her house because her stepmother was waiting for her to get a facial or something like that.
I got on my bike and started pedaling home. I enjoyed the trip observing the beautiful landscape that was around me, I loved nature and the variation of flora and fauna that existed in my city.
Upon arrival, I headed straight to my garden to collect Lazy's food, but before I reached my destination, I saw a boy stand in my way. Her back was turned so the only thing she could see was how muscular and wide it was, her hands were hidden, her legs were spread and a liquid fell between them. A stranger was urinating on the plants!
I must have screamed because the boy turned and looked at me with raised eyebrows, I was sure he had seen that brown hair before, but I did not have time to ask him the name. She was urinating and I had to stop her!
The boy looked at me strangely and, when he understood my thoughts, he opened his mouth forming a wide "O".
"I'm not ... I'm not doing that." I'm watering the plants!
I covered my eyes with my hands to avoid seeing too much.
- Is this how you say when you urinate the plants? It's kind of gross.
- Pee the plants? But I'm watering the plants! The boy's deep voice began to turn desperate but there was also a comic touch to it. "Look, here's the hose!"
- Don't even think about showing me your "hose"! - I hissed.
The boy stifled a laugh and I heard him take a few steps towards me.
"I think you've yelled enough already and still no one has come."
I was right. Oh no! He was going to die at the hands of a stranger who urinated on the plants.
- Aren't you going to get your hands off your face?
- That depends, do you still want me to see your hose?
The boy snorted.
- I already dropped the hose, my hands are clean.
I opened one of my eyes and saw the boy through my fingers. It was the same guy who had broken into my room two days ago when I was making posters with Lia, well, when I was making posters and he was sleeping. Clearly this guy had a problem with the toilets.
"You're the boy who came into my room." What are you doing here?
—Your mother hired me and one of my tasks is to water the plants, see?
She pointed to the ground where the green hose used for watering was located. She didn't want to show me her hose after all.
I lowered my hands completely even though I would have liked to hide from embarrassment, oh earth this would be a good time to eat me! Look at me, I'm delicious!
Despite my pleas, the land did not want to taste me and I continued in my place being analyzed by intense honey-colored eyes.
"Well, I think I should go." Now that I stopped you from urinating on the soles, I can continue my life with ease. My mission is over.
Before I could continue saying stupid things my feet took pity on me and began to walk away from my humiliation. I was walking on my back because I did not dare to turn my back on the hose boy who followed my steps with a smile on his lips and subtly moving his hand saying goodbye, the situation was so ridiculous that after a couple of meters I could not contain myself and ran away from the crime scene where the victim had been my dignity who was buried ten meters underground.
The orchard would have to wait.
When I got to my room, I lay down next to Lazy and tried to breathe slowly to calm my running-crazed pulse. My hare approached me demanding food and affection.
"Sorry, Lazy." You will have to wait to eat.
Hoping to distract myself, I opened my backpack to start doing my homework. When I opened the bag I found the envelopes that I had saved hours before, I had completely forgotten their existence.
I opened the first one.
"Hi Lydia,
I got a poster and I think I need your help. My best friend rejected me because he is in love with my best friend. Every time he tries to talk to her I feel like my stomach clenches. I don't know if you have a plant for that. If so, I enclose the money and I hope you can leave me the solution in box 12.
Thank you!"
I was surprised to read the note, yesterday we had started to distribute the brochures with Lia and she had already had responses. I hadn't thought it would be that easy.
I excitedly opened the other two letters that brought requests similar to the first.
Clearly I would have to go to the greenhouse to collect the necessary plants and, for that, I would have to go through the orchard where I had found the boy moments ago. I'd better do it at night.
I spent the afternoon doing my homework until I had no more things to study, I was tempted to memorize the periodic table only to keep putting off my meeting in the garden. I took a deep breath to give myself courage. It was already dark, surely the hose boy had returned home. I started down the stairs and when I got to the first floor I heard my mother calling me.
- What happens?
I followed my mother's voice to her office where there were five people, including the hose boy. Her eyes fell on me and she didn't bother to hide her bright smile.
My mother gestured for me to come inside and began to speak in her characteristic soft voice.
"Well, I wanted to introduce you to my daughter, Lydia." Lydia, these are the new hires at the florist, you'll see them here every day. She is Doria. ”The aforementioned was a woman in her fifties who smiled kindly at me. I returned the smile, it would be the sales manager. My mother kept naming the workers. There were two other women, Clara and Sonia, both were about my mother's age and would be in charge of creating the bouquets. There were only two men, Trent who looked to be in his forties and would be in charge of packing and Alan, the hose boy, would be in charge of collecting the plants and taking care of them.
"Well hello everyone."
They all smiled at me and I felt a bit uncomfortable. They seemed to be expecting me to say more than just "hi" but I couldn't think of anything else to add. A heavy silence was present.
"Hey, I have to go out." Goodbye and welcome.
They smiled again and I got out as fast as I could. So many smiles intimidated me, mainly one overly white and perfect, as if it had been taken from a toothpaste commercial, only missing the sparkle.
I breathed the night air and I felt the tranquility invade me. I cleared my mind of my old thoughts and headed to the greenhouse where I collected the plants I would need to answer the girls who had sent me the letters.
I went to my room, but before I reached my destination, my mother got in my way. What did people have with meddling in my way lately?
- And what did you think of the new workers?
- They all look nice and responsible.
My mother looked at me and lowered her voice, even though we were the only ones in the house. The employees had already gone to their own homes.
- And what did you think Alan?
I looked at her with narrowed eyes. What was this woman up to?
- She looked just as responsible as the rest. Why do you ask?
- You are welcome.
I was silent for a few seconds and took a deep breath to relax me.
But she was capable and a flirtatious smile verified it.
