I check the time; 3:05 p.m. He should be back soon. I start to take off my shoes when the door bursts open.
I jump up, startled, and gracelessly fall onto the floor. I look up to see Devon and his girlfriend, Eliza, staring down at me. His shoulder blade length, chocolate brown hair is pulled back into a low ponytail. His tanned skin is covered with a red Ralph Lauren polo, light blue straight jeans, and red converse. Lizzy is dressed in similar colors with a red and blue dress and red converse. Her waist-length, black to purple gradient hair is pulled back with a red ribbon bow.
"What're you doing down there?" he asks. I must look ridiculous; I have one shoe halfway off, my hair is cascading down my face since I took off my hairclips, and my shirt has risen up since it got caught on my bed frame when I feel. I look up at both of them through my hair as I try to compose myself.
"Oh, uh, me? I'm not, oof, doing an- anything. Just you know, lounging around?" I fluster out as I trip, trying to take my last shoe off. I sit back down on my bed and rummage through my backpack so I can start my homework before the weekend.
"Uh, yeah totally. Anyway, let's go," I hear Devon say.
"Go where?" I respond not looking up from my papers. I feel the bed dip and my papers are gone before I know it.
"You're coming with me to my guest speaker lecture today, so hurry up and get ready," he says, putting my papers back, probably in the wrong place.
"Just take Liz with you," I plead, trying to wrestle my bag away from him, to no avail. Darn him and his athletic body.
"No can do, Mick," I hated that name. "I have a class now so I can't." She says.
"Oh, how convenient," I mumbled, rolling my eyes. "I guess I'll go."
"I knew you would," he beams. "Let's go so we can get a close seat," he urges, pulling me up while I try to put on my shoes.
"Chottomatte baka!" I say, frustrated. My mom is Japanese and I have the tendency to speak the language when I get upset or really excited, which happens a lot which is why Devon replies:
"Did you just call me an idiot?"
"Pft, what? Why would I do that Bestie?" I beam, feigning innocence.
"Whatever we don't have time for this."
We leave the dorm and head towards the Creative Arts department. Devon is a music major and is studying to become a producer. He wants to work for this big company named M&J, whatever that stands for. I, on the other hand, am studying to become an elementary teacher. I've always enjoyed being around kids and my younger siblings think I'm a good tutor.
When we get to the building, we make our way to Auditorium A, which is the biggest in that building. On the way, Devon told me that the guest speaker was the CEO of M&J Productions so he could hardly contain himself, which I can see now. He is practically jumping out of his skin and I fear his face will get stuck with how hard he's smiling.
"Calm down, Dev. It's just a lecture, not a job offer," I tease.
"It's not just a lecture, I get to meet my future boss today!" He gushes. I laugh and begin to reply when my shoe scuffs across the floor. I trip and I see the floor approaching my face quickly. I brace myself for the impact when someone suddenly catches me. I look up and I'm met with the most beautiful set of hazelnut eyes I've ever seen. I blush and try to find my footing quickly, but end up falling even more. The Korean stranger helps me steady myself before letting go of my arms. I brush my hair behind my ear and look to the floor as I say:
"Thanks for catching me, I didn't mean to fall into you like that."
"Mmm, no problem. Be careful next time." the stranger whispers. His voice is husky but soothing at the same time. I swoon. When I look up, he's already walking away. I stay put and stare into the direction he went, too embarrassed to move.
"Well that was embarrassing, good thing it wasn't me," Devon says, slapping me on the back.
"Yeah, how lucky for you," I roll my eyes. I swear, one of these days they're gonna get stuck.
We continue walking to the auditorium and get there in no time. We find two seats up front and chat before the lecture starts. The professor taps on the mic to get everyone's attention.
"Good afternoon, students. I'm Professor Manon and I teach the Music Appreciation class here at Neucaster University. Today's lecture will be given by one of our alumnus who had a music major, just like all of you here. Please give a warm welcome to the CEO of M&J Productions, Mister Lee Chang!"
Everyone claps while the speaker makes his way onto the stage. I stop clapping as I see the handsome Korean stranger who caught me earlier stand in front of the podium.
I can't believe it! I tripped into one of the richest people in Anville Falls! How could you be so clumsy, Mickey? Honestly, lucky for you, you're never going to meet him again. Exactly, we are never going to meet again so there's no need to panic. Although, there is the off chance that on the way ou you could trip and fall into him again. That'd be suuuuper embarrassing. Even more embarrassing than the first time. This would have been so much easier if he wasn't rich. Or famous. Or not here at all. Yeah, that would be best. If he wasn't here then there wouldn't be a guest speaker, there wouldn't be a lecture, Devon wouldn't have forced me here, and I could still be in my dorm doing homework. But, he is here, and he is rich and famous, and there is a guest speaker lecture, and you were forced here, and it's too late to change any of that. Oh, who am I kidding? This is the worst day ever and it's all Devon's fault. That's right! If it weren't for Devon, I wouldn't be here!
I turn to glare at Devon but he's already looking at me like I'm crazy.
"What is it?" I ask
"What do you mean? I've been calling your name for five minutes. The lecture is over," he says.
I look around to see that we are the only ones left.
"Oh. Then what are we still doing here? Let's go." I question as I stand to leave.
Devon follows me shaking his head. We make our way back to the dorm and Devon asks what I want for dinner. I tell him that he can choose and head to the bathroom. I stand before the mirror and stare deeply into my soul. Today has been quite the day. Thankfully, it's over and tomorrow will be back to normal and this day will seem like nothing but an unpleasant dream. At least, that's what I hope will happen.
