Chapter Ten
Acceptance.
When I walk outside nearly two dozen guards have their rifles trained on me. I can also see the reflection of about six sniper rifle scopes maybe more. A smile spreads across my face and I feel more alive then I ever have. “Dammit Inanis!” I see the guards shift refocusing their guns on me and I realize I said that out loud. I hear Inanis chuckling in my head. “It’s not me this time my son. This is very promising indeed.” The smile on my face widens further enough that my teeth are showing. I know they can’t kill me and every time they try at least one will die. That kind of power is intoxicating. I walk forward, but they don’t shoot. I’m not a quarter of the way there when the doctor or I suppose my father steps forward. He was standing behind a couple of larger guards. It must be why I didn’t see him before. “William my son. Just calm down will you.” The robotic voice from his phone does nothing to calm me down. Knowing that my actual parents where here whilst I was being dissected and did nothing infuriates me. The rage burns through me and I don’t know what I look like, but I see the guards shuffle back. These hardened men that didn’t move when I killed one of their own are scared. I could use this to my advantage. I start to walk towards the entrance with my father telling me to stop in over a dozen different ways. No guard would get within twenty yards of me. I’m almost to the gate when my mother steps in front of me. Her right hand is bandaged and she’s in a standard uniform. It doesn’t take much effort for me to figure out that she’s the one who broke the glass in the labs observation room. Also, judging by her new attire she’s been demoted. She’s unarmed. She knows killing me won’t do any good. “Inanis I need that strength from before.”
A surge of energy flows through me. I pick up a rock from the ground and crush it between my fingers. This does nothing to intimidate her. She simply pulls a syringe from her belt. At first I think it’s a sedative for me, but then she injects herself in the neck. “You tried to stop them from dissecting me didn’t you mom?” She nods her head a single tear rolling down her cheek. “Then move. I don’t want to hurt you.” She shakes her head at me and types on her phone, but far more delicately then normal. “Your father has made arrangements. Nothing like that will happen again without your permission.” I shake my head at her. “Maybe not you two, but I don’t trust The Company.” She takes a step forward and offers a hand to me. I look her in empty eye sockets. “I’m sorry.” I charge forward and strike with about half force. I want to move her out of the way not kill her. Then the unexpected happens. She catches my fist. I hear bones snap. Tendons and muscles give way. This in turn breaks me. I’m no longer whatever it is I’ve become either some kind of prophet or monster. I’m just my mothers’ son again. A little boy even. A little boy who has just hurt his mother. Then I feel it. A strike on the left side of my face. I feel my brain raddle around in my skull and everything goes dark.
I don’t know where I am when I wake up and I don’t feel the presence of Inanis. It looks like a regular room this time although the walls and door are made of a metal I don’t recognize. Once again, the strength is gone. I’m left alone for two days and the first visitor I get is my mom. She’s wearing a sling and shoulder brace, but I don’t sense any anger or resentment coming from her. She pulls out her phone. “It’s okay I don’t blame you. You’ve been through quite a bit.” She takes a seat in the armchair and gestures towards the couch. The room is quite well furnished this time. After I take a seat she leans forward. “William who is Inanis?” I feel a pressure in my skull and the room shakes rattling as if it were in a thunder storm. My mother is of course startled by this. I wander why he can’t reach me through the walls. I’m not sure why, but I find myself smiling. My mother looks at me concern etched on what I can make out of her face. It’s hard to tell without the eyes. “Son answer me. What was that?” The room shakes once more, but only slightly. “That my dear mother is a god.” Her face goes pale and she starts trembling as the walls creak and bend inward. I’m so tired of this. I stand up stretching my arms outward. “Inanis I have an offer for you!” My mother rushes towards me, but she’s too slow. The door flies inward as if there was an explosion on the other side. A blast of air pushes my mother across the room strong enough to move her out of the way, but not enough to cause serious damage. Yet the wind doesn’t affect me. Then I hear him. “That took longer than I thought it would. I’m proud of you. Now what’s this offer?” I lower my arms taking a deep breath. “Restore my perception to normal and free me from this place. Do that and I’ll be your prophet.” An echoing laughter fills the room and I can almost feel Inanis as if he’s standing next to me. I look to my mother horror plastered on her face. She understood everything we had been saying. I feel a hand on my shoulder and everything goes dark.
