The Roommate (ORIGINAL)

Hey!

I’m kind of bad at writing emails, they always turn out so short. But I’m doing my best to write good ones.

Illa and David are all right. They’re happy I’m home for more than two weeks, I think. I wish I was back at school, though. Even with my room at home, I miss our dorm. I still need to take down some of the stuff in here from my ‘hardcore goth’ phase. Band posters and stuff… I guess I’ll get that done this summer.

I’d suggest that we get together this summer-- hang out, you know?-- but you live far away and both of us are somewhat-broke prep school kids, not mooching off of our parents for money because we’re smart, so it’s probably unlikely.

At least I have these emails, huh?

Sincerest Wishes,

Ez

P.S. I need a better closer than ‘sincerest wishes’. I sound like a parent.

Hello!

It’s okay, I’m not great at emails either. I can barely spell half the time when it’s personal stuff (all of my ‘normal person words’ go to school assignments). My family’s okay, mostly, if a little scrambled because ‘Josh is home for the whole summer whAT’ (it’s insanity here, who am I kidding). My room’s exactly like it was at break, and I still cringe at all of the old football stuff my dad won’t let me take down. He’s religious about it, pretty much. OOF. I wish we could meet up, too, but you’re right that it makes no sense. And yeah, you need a new closer.

Write back,

Josh.

Howdy.

Wait, I need to not say that. I’m not… oof, I’m not Southern enough to say that. Well, whatever. Hey. I’m sorry about your room.

My siblings suck, have I mentioned that?

They woke me up at seven. I’m angered. And exhausted. UGH, I miss school so much… we got to sleep in at school, and I didn’t have the imp and the munchkin to bother me. I was honestly happier. Good god.

I miss you, as weird and cheesy as that is to say.

Write back soon,

Ez

Hello!

Don’t say howdy, please. It doesn’t suit you. Have I mentioned that I continue to be in love with your (my) hoodie? Because it’s still soft and the orange blossom scent continues to stick around. You’ve corrupted me, too-- I bought a scented candle and a lighter, I’m becoming a delinquent like you. I’ll have to bring them when I get back to school with you again. I miss you too, and it’s not weird, ‘cause both of us have said it now.

Write back,

Josh.

Haha, I won’t say it again.

I love your jacket, too, it’s super soft and honestly, I wear it all the time.

Ooh, a scented candle? I’m definitely ‘corrupting’ you. You’ll have to make sure it matches up with my superior pumpkin spice candle before you bring it to school. What’s it smell like?

Also, I’d rather be with you than my family right now, to be honest.

My mom’s doing okay, but my siblings are hell.

Write back soon.

I miss you.

There’s too much football in my room, to be honest. And I’m so screwed for the rest of the summer-- they’re making me be a counsellor at a summer camp. I’ll try to email as much as I can, but I dunno how much I’ll manage… I’ll definitely do my best, though, I like talking with you, and emails seem-- weirdly enough-- closer than texting?

Write back,

Josh.

I miss you too.

Sorry about the football. Sorry about the counselling.

I have less and less to talk about in these emails, but I’m glad you keep writing.

Hey.

Sorry I went dark for a while, children are exhausting. I don’t have much to say, either. I miss you, I guess. Can’t wait for September.

Write back,

Josh.

I can’t wait for September either.

It’s in a month.

I don’t think I’ll write another email until then.

Write back, I guess.

Oof, can’t wait to see you! School can’t come soon enough, funnily enough. Miss you!

Don’t bother writing back,

Josh.

"Josh's roommate, after two full years of living in the same small space, has finally graduated from the prestigious Aerial Prep. Needless to say, he's less than thrilled when his new roommate is essentially his polar opposite. He's doing his best to get by, but Ezra irks him to no end.

Ezra isn't fond of his sport-oriented, somewhat dumb roommate either, but he's got a growth mindset and hopes that he and Josh might find a way to get along, even if it ends up being a constant state of pretending each other don't exist.

Both young boys will spend the last two years of boarding school together, doing their best to keep a symbiotic relationship. But somewhere in the process, the feelings start to not feel so much like hate anymore... and their whole dynamic gets thrown out of whack."
