After a rather gloomy morning, the sun finally showed it smile, peaking through the greyish clouds. The weather was mild for the 31st of October, but like many of their peer Kalina and Beloslava were happy to wear their leather jackets as much as they could before tucking them away for the winter. Back from their "mission" to buy more candies for the evening, they were admiring the leaves changing colours, while waiting for their bus to come when a red sports car stopped. In it were three boys, wearing jackets that let people know they were students at Kater high school, the girls' Suntolia high school rival, on them were smiling wide.
"Isn't it too early for you to be on your way to the party, or you are just making a list of the houses you are going to visit trick and treating?" One of the boys teased them while pulling his shoulder-length wavy blonde hair with his left arm, as his right one was still on the wheel. Even his douchey smile couldn't hide his supermodel appearance.
"Isn't a bit too late for you to act like a creep, or that's just how you are?" Kalina was fast on calling him out. His friends couldn't help but laugh as surprise took over his face.
"Sorry about that, girls!" The boy next to him talked instead of his face, his eyes sincere. "We saw you walking with the bags and were wondering if you would like us to drop you off to your home. I mean, not in front of it, because your mum is super strict and she wouldn't want to see you are hanging out around boys, let alone from our school." His eyes were focused on Bela, and blushed showed upon his olive-skinned faced as he started talking faster and more nervous. Bela, who had blushed as well, nodded slightly. He and the boy sitting on the backseat slightly look their bags, put them on in the trunk and opened the door, so the girls could get in.
Bela sat behind the blushing boy, Asen, while Kalina was in the middle, next to the third boy. He wasn't as handsome as his two friends, his hair short, paler blond and a long nose that gave him a slightly regal appearance. Gavrail Alenovranov and Kalina Petrosinova sat next to each other, the nephew of KHS's principal and youngest sister of SHS's principal were travelling in the same car, making the atmosphere as awkward things could get and beyond that.
After a few moments of silence, he took the initiative to begin a conversation or at least an attempt. "How's your knee?". Kalina didn't know how to answer it. Was he asking her to mock her, or was he trying to be polite? Kalina, like both her sisters, was part of the lacrosse, however, she had to take a break from it after a girl from Volniya's team "accidentally" hit her in the knee with her stick. "Better. It doesn't hurt all the time anymore." That's all she could come up with.
"Those girls sure had some nerve, when you take into consideration that it was supposed to be a friendly game." Vesel couldn't hold the anger in his voice, as any type of trickery was seen as a dishonourable trait in one's character. Everyone nodded in agreement.
"If I wasn't screaming in agony, I would have punched her in the face, but kicking her out of the team and banning her from playing is enough...for now". Everyone was a bit confused, so she quickly added "Just kidding". And as if they all started feeling less tense around each other.
"So, what are you planning on dressing up as?"Asen asked and blushed again as his eyes met with those of Bela.
"I am going to go as Sailor Neptune, while Kalina as Sailor Uranus." Her voice was filled with pride, as she remembered the numerous hours it took her to make them.
"Remember the weird dub when they made them cousins, to hide they were lovers?"
"Yeah, that's where we had our inspiration from." Kalina added.
The boys went pale for a moment and in a slightly trembling voice, Vesel asked "Is this your coming out moment?". This question made the girls lock eyes and after a dramatic one minute, they both shouted "No!".
"Nothing against the LGBTQ community, but both of us are straight. People at school tease us about being super close, even though we are cousins and we decided to use it against them. Doesn't make any sense, but who would pass the opportunity to be a Sailor Scout?" Everyone nodded in agreement regarding the last sentence."What are you guys going as?"
"Ross, Chandler and Joye from Friends, because we had to come up with it in the last minute." Gavrail explained while taking a piece of gum and offering one to Kalina, who declined.
"Yeah, we were going to watch all Scream parts at my place, after taking my twin brothers trick and treating, but mum's plans failed and she said she'll take them." Asen explained.
"I wouldn't mind getting some candies myself, but popularity duties are calling...just kidding." Vesel revealed his perfect teeth while smiling. "But honestly, I really don't want to go to that party."
"Same. I would rather go and knock on every door in the town, then go to a party with those people from school. Not that aunt Asya and aunt Delyana were going to let us, but for a moment we were thinking of going there under the premise we were for candies."
"I honestly feel like we go to a school of emotional vampires, that drain every bit of happiness in my body." Gavrail signed, with his to friends nodding.
"So, I call my mother and tell her she could help dad handing out candies, while we take the boys out?" Asen's voice was excited and his eyes sparkling.
"Zhu Li, do the thing!" Vesel urged him.
"So, can you be ready in an hour or two the most?" His dark hair was messy from nervously running his fingers through it.
"You can pick us from here in two hours? Is two hours fine, Kala?" Kalina nodded, while Vasil, who understood what he meant stopped the car. After Gavrail helped Kalina take the bags out of the trunk, Asen looked towards Bela "So it's a date? ...I mean not a date date, but like a date."
"Yeah, a date." She was as nervous as him. "So, see you in two hours here." Both of them waved at the guys, who did the same, but the moment they turned around Asen buried his face in his palms to hide his embraced face, while Vasil patted him on the shoulder and Gavrail was smiling amused.

While she felt that the girls might be getting a bit old to go out trick and treating, Asya was happy to see her little girl stay little a bit longer. But she couldn't help but notice how fast they got in their costumes. They didn't even stay for more than five photos. But she would talk with them about that later. Right now, this pharmacy owner, sporting a mad scientist costume, was placing a few more "Snickers" bars in the Jack'o'lanter bows she would hand out to children.
Besides her, in casual clothing, her sister Delyana was grading tests and drinking tea with a little something extra.
"How many kids will show up dressed as witches this year?" she put down the pen and took a sip from her mug.
"A lot. Probably one in every group. It is a popular costume of choice." She took the safety goggles off and smiled at her little sister. "I know you don't like this portrayal of our kind, but it has gotten better in recent years. Remember when the Wizard of Oz came out?"
"I love that movie so much, but the way they showed East and West is just repulsive!" Disgust, yes disgust could be traced in her voice. "But have you seen girls romanticise us these days? Flattered, but it's not all fun and games! We have so many duties, that it's a miracle how we balance things out!"
"True, true. This generation could never get it. I mean, just look at Bela and Kala. They don't miss a chance to slack and have fun! We couldn't even rest without someone telling us we are letting ourselves go every five minutes!"
"In their defence, life didn't offer the same entertainment as it does now."
"At least they don't smoke, drink and sway. I know I would have."
"Me too, me too...wait that's the life I am leading now, kinda."
Their laughter was cut short with the first of many ringing of the doorbell.
"Trick or treat!" A cheerful chorus of children voices, ages between 6 and 10, belonging to a zombie, mummy, vampire, fairy and a WITCH. The first one for this night. The sisters crossed eyes and smiled.
"Aren't you all so pretty dressed up!" Delyana said while placing some candy in the fairy's bag.
"I don't have brains, I hope the candies are enough for you, Mr. Zombie."
"Careful, those bandages might get caught somewhere!"
"Did you change teeth already?"
It was the little witch turn. Delyana placed some candies in it, while Asya teased her "You aren't going to put a spell on us if you don't like the candies we gave you, are you?"
All of the children thanked them in unison, as they headed to the next houses.
"That was cringy, don't you think big sis?"
"I honestly don't know how we are going to come up with one-liners to compliment them all night."
"Can't we just turn the lights off and eat the candies ourselves?"
"As much as I would love to do that, we can't. Here comes another group, put your smile back on!"
And after a full 180 transformation, the new group of dragon, cat and her witch were greeted with even more excitement than the one before.
"Careful not to burn my house down with your breath"
"Is your witch behaving, kitty cat?"
The children and their parents laughed and thanked them.
"It's gonna be a long night"
"Seems so, hold the front, while I go get us something to keep our spirits up"
Speaking of spirits, two children dressed up as ghost came forth
"Boo!" said one.
"Give us candy, so our souls can find peace!"
Delyana couldn't help herself from smiling, so she put them a bit extra. The boys took off their masks and smiled widely at her, and one even blew her a kiss while going back to the three boys that brought them. Wait, those were students from KHS! Nah, screw it, they were kids, let them have some fun.
Asya came back with their special tea and they proceeded to hand out candies to the children that would come. Almost every group had its witch and with each one, Delyana was fighting the urge to burst into explanations what an actual witch is and how the false information that was spread centuries ago was degrading for her kind. And those hideous hats - they were a joke!
The night went on and before they knew it they were out of candies, so they could help it but go inside and wait for the girls to return. It didn't take long for that to happen.
"Trick or treat" they entered the kitchen and presented their full bags. Asya smiled and presented them with baked milked and eggs pumpkin, while Delyana handed them mugs with regular tea. Heading to the living room they all laying on the couch to enjoy the last hours of the 31st by watching The Addams.
"Happy Halloween, mum! Halloween, aunt Doda!" said Bela, who was snuggled in Asya's arms.
"Happy Halloween to you, dear!" answered Delyana, while Asya kissed her on the forehead and did the same to Kalina.
