"Courage is like a diamond, forged under pressure, and Strength is a heart made impregnable."
- Gwendolyn Harrington
The little girl continued to run around her mother's garden with her younger sister, jumping over rocks and bushes, her eyes glinting under the sun as she did. They laughed as they chased each other under the giant tree near the bench where their mother sat smiling at them.
A young Catherine watched the two siblings from her room inside the mansion.
How she envied them.
"Where are you, Elijah?" She whispered as she stared outside her window.
She hugged Elijah, her white teddy bear which she named after her brother, closer to her.
A loud knock startled her, then the door opened revealing her father. His cold and calculating eyes looked down on her.
"Why are you still in your room? We will be late!" Anger flashed in his eyes, which was enough to instil fear upon the child.
She walked towards her father with her head down. He snatched her bear away and threw it across the room.
"Playing with toys is a waste of time." He said as he dragged her out of the room.
Tears streamed down her small face as they went down the staircase and into the car.
"You're a Harrington. You should know better."
She kept her head down trying to hide her tears from her father.
"Yes, Dad." Then the car drove on towards the exit.
She looked out the window with tear-stained eyes just as they were passing by their neighbour's front garden. The two girls were now laughing as their mother joined their game.
"Stop crying, Catherine. It's ridiculous." Her father snapped.
With an aching heart, she wiped her tears at the back of her hand and tried to compose herself as she felt the pain in her chest.
She looked straight and wore a blank expression, but deep down a mere 7 years old is crying her heart out and no one even heard it.
