Any stressful situation sent Zoe fleeing into a daydream, which was always set in a memory. This time Zoe found herself in yesterday, reenacting the day she left her home for this school. She was in high spirits, believing she was going to be doing something exciting with her life, finally. Her suitcase was already packed the night before, and she had plenty of time to speak with her family before the college’s designated car came to pick her up. Her sister stayed home from school and her parents took time off work to see her off. Zoe wasn’t extremely close with her family during these last few years. Small talk was the show of affection passed around the household. But her family was there for her and made sure she was packed with everything and anything she could need. Zoe wasn’t quite upset about leaving, but she was anxious about the change.
Her mother noticed how unsure Zoe was looking as they were waiting for the car to arrive and called out to her, saying “Zoe, honey, you’ll do fine. You are always thinking on your feet and capable of facing any situation.”
“Thanks, Mom, I needed that. This school is so different. I don’t know what will be waiting for me when I arrive,” Zoe replied feeling more confident.
“Zoe,” her dad sighed. “Be careful, take care of yourself out there, don’t take any risks, and make sure to study.”
“Okay Dad, I’ll study,” Zoe said in a sarcastic tone, then with a more serious tone she continued, “and if it doesn’t look very safe, I’ll come back. I promise.”
The car arrived, her mother had tears in her eyes and her dad asked for a hug before she left, while her sister offered her some casual good luck and a half-hearted “I’ll miss you”.
