“What is your name?” I had to ask.
“Jacob, Jacob Church.” He answers as he tries to walk awkwardly getting used to the motions again.
“Well Jacob, I am Levi.” I begin to explain as we walked down the street. “I have a good idea of what my Divinity is, and I suppose you might as well.” Jacob looked thoughtful for a while but then nodded in agreement.
“I have not heard of a god with a Divinity like this.” He admits, which made me believe that was why Ares wanted to be my ally so much more.
“But as I said I am a new god, you might believe I am omniscient and omnipresent. I assure you I am not. For me just yesterday morning I was a mortal.” I sighed, and Jacob’s jaw practically dragged along the road we walk down.
“Mortal?” He gasps as if we were beings that were sprung into existence.
“Indeed, now we need to prepare for this banquet. You need to get cleaned up, shaved, and look fitting to be a Knight-Commander.”
“As you will.” He answers, I reached into my belt and tried to feel for coins, hopefully my Divinity has covers me for coin as well.
“Here.” I push a few coins into his hand which he clenched tight into his hand but he remained walking by my side.
“M’Lord…” He put on a pained expression on his face.
“Yes.” I stopped and looked into his face.
“Do you perhaps intend to take more people into your ranks?” He asks bluntly, I hadn’t honestly sat down and thought about what I intend to do with my new life.
“What do gods do here?” I answered with another question.
“They send people into the Tower, to challenge it, to bring back riches and rewards, and to increase their prestige amongst their peers.” He gave the best answer he could with his knowledge. To me it sounded like these gods just enjoyed playing around with mortal lives, manipulating them with promises of fame and power.
I couldn’t decide if I wanted the gods unlistening more than wanting their attention.
“If you understand my Divinity then you can understand why I could heal you, I don’t believe I’ll be able to do the same with everyone else.”
“The price for healing is servitude?” He asks as if that was all, it disgusted me that he casually disregarded his free will after I died without one.
“No,” I answer, I had been going around this all wrong I realise. “I died without being free to do as I wished believing I would be punished by a god. If you wish to leave and pursue a new life then you are free to go.” I could see the thought of it cross his face, moving away from the city and living in a rural town away from all this bullshit.
“Is that true?”
“I swear on my Divinity.” I felt my power lock into place within my soul. His eyes went wide once more and he scratched his beard quickly before coming to a decision, then he showed irritation on his face.
“I was going to swear my life to you and uphold your belief, but that seems like an oxymoron.” He explains, I thought about it as well.
“Hahaha!” I laugh realising he was right, if gods were using their blessings to force people into serving them then I would be hard-pressed to find loyal followers. Jacob started laughing with me as well. “Jacob, I have yet to decide what I’m going to do with my godhood. There is no rush for me to pick up followers, if you have friends that you know can be healed by me then I will, however, let us handle that after the banquet. We’ll steal some food and give it away as we do that.”
Jacob nods furiously before running off to get a shave. Hopefully, to bathe too. I spent my time walking around and waiting, I didn’t have very much to do and I was pretty sure Ares would find me regardless of where I was in the city.
That time also gave me some space to think about who I am and what I plan to do. I focused on the next few hours, it seemed to be easiest and I’d rather not stress the future that much until I have a better understanding of what the situation is.
My plan is as follows:
- Meet up with Jacob, Ares, and whoever Ares’ follower is.
- Go to a banquet, greet gods, find information on Oaths, steal food.
- Start a fight with Oaths.
- The consequences of my actions.
- Get kicked out probably.
- Heal some people, then go to sleep.
Seems simple enough, which I like because complicated plans tend to fall into shit easily. I tried to get some more rest but my mind kept drifting over to either shouting down Oaths like a Sergeant-At-Arms to a rookie that knocked over an armour stand or just beating on him like a Sergeant-At-Arms would.
Decisions… Decisions…
“I can sense your anger.” Ares’ voice announces as he found a place to sit next to me, I don’t know why but that pissed me off more.
“Ares,” I regard him, “how long do we have?”
“A little longer, not much. How went your search?”
“Found one, seems promising,” I answer, giving as little details as possible.
“You don’t really seem that interested in being a god.” I could feel the accusation in his voice, I opened my eyes at that, looked at his follower, to my surprise a woman in plate mail armour, then to him.
“What could possibly have given that away.” I ask.
“Your demeanor for one, especially after drinking.”
I looked up at the Tower and had a quick debate with myself before answering, it was obviously made by a god, no mere mortal race would dare to attempt such a construction. “Where was my god when I died?” My words had a cold bite to them. “Playing games with mortals lives and throwing them away when they could no longer play with them.” I stared into his ruby-red eyes and I found them seething with anger.
“You. Do. Not. Know.” He squeezes the words out through his teeth, a blood-red aura flickering around his like lightning. His attendant stepped back and away panicking and the rest of the street quickly evacuated away. They were at the whims of two gods that seemed like they were about to fight, we did not belong here.
“No, I don’t,” I answer, simply. That seemed like enough to calm him. He took a few more minutes to respond back to me when his emotions were once more in check.
“You’re the first god to be born fifty thousand years and we have been trying to climb that damn tower for around thirty thousand.”
“Why not just.” I gesture towards the tower with my hand almost lazily.
“Because of the agreement to lock our Divinities.” He sighed and I became confused. “We’ll explain at the banquet, luckily now your follower is here. Looks like quite a sharp fellow.”
I looked over to where Ares was and saw Jacob returning to the now empty street. His hair shorn short over his scalp, his beard completely removed, he was wearing different clothes as well. A cloth and leather armour, beaten and scratched but clean.
Ares stood up and I joined him, “Miranda, this is Levi the new god and his follower…?”
“Jacob, he is my Knight-Commander.” I answered for him while Ares raised an eyebrow as if to say ‘That’s quite the title’
“Levi and Jacob, this is Miranda, my Adjutant.”
“A pleasure.” She bowed likely.
“Likewise.” Jacob mirrored, Ares watched them interact like watching two kids pretend to play war and smiled.
“Let’s go, I can’t wait for something interesting to happen.” He smiled quite sinisterly but his Adjutant just sighed.
