Half of the group were focused on their studies and the other was playing around, which wasn’t so distracting since they tried to not be so loud for the rest of the group. Lucas continued to help me out with a few of my problems once he was done with his own homework and Genevieve even stepped in seeing that I had come by for a tutoring season. We started making our way out of the library and you can feel the fresh cool evening air. I looked around at everyone as we all walked over to the parking garage and I wondered if they were just being kind in inviting me with them after saying that I’ll attend their meeting.
“Michael, you can come with me in my car,” Lucas said and Andre was beside him. “The girls have their own car and so does Leo. Unless you want to ride with them?”
“I don’t know about riding a motorcycle,” I confessed.
“It’s fine. I bought my Jeep so come with me,” He said stopping at his trail to wait for me to follow him. “Andre is coming with us as well.”
“My car is in the shop,” Andre says rolling his eyes. “I’m without a car for the whole week and I’ll be Lucas road-trip buddy.”
Lucas gave Andre a confused expression, “Road-trip buddy? We are not doing any sort of road trip.”
I smiled as we got inside the car and I sat in the back. “Where are you guys going?”
“Oh, we have plans to go drive until we run out of gas! Drive out to the wild, be cavemen, that we need to live off the lands and learn to start a fire,” Andre tells me, waving his hands around like he’s telling a story. “Eating berries, make friends with the wolves and join their pack then take over to be alpha’s.”
Lucas continues to give Andre a confused expression before turning to me, “Don’t encourage him. He could be an actor, but he enjoys a challenge and will convince others to join him.”
“Are you saying we’re not going to the wild?” Andre asked.
“No,” Lucas answered and parked the car once at the restaurant. “Alright, kids, let’s get out of the car and act like adults.”
I couldn’t help but laugh as I stepped out of the car and followed them inside. “Andre, would you actually go to the woods?”
“Only if we book a cabin to shelter in and there would be drinks to celebrate our nights,” He answered and waved over to the rest of the group once they arrived.
“We can always create a retreat for the summer,” Lucas said, turning to Andre and gave him a smile. “We need to be near a lake.”
“Boys in swimshorts,” Andre replied.
I laughed as Lucas smack him in the arm, “You guys really do things like that?”
“Go into the wild and check out boys? No, that is Lucas’s favorite thing to do,” Andre teases as we sat down at a large table.
Lucas turned to Andre, “We have a new guest and you’re having too much fun.”
Andre opened his mouth and they both stared at each other for a long second then sat back, “You never let me have fun.”
Genevive sat beside me and Leo sat on my other side. “What’s going on?” Elaine asked.
“Parenthood,” Lucas answered.
“Ah, no thanks,” Genevive replied.
I couldn’t help smile as I reached for the menu and Lucas turned to me, “I hope you don’t mind Mexican. It’s our usual spot so we always come straight here and the food is good.”
“I’m getting enchiladas,” Elaine said without looking at the menu.
“Are we sharing nachos?” Andre asked Lucas.
“I thought you were on a diet,” Lucas asked, calling for a waiter and everyone started putting in their order.
“It’s my cheat day,” He answered.
“I thought Sunday was your cheat day?” Leo asked.
“Yes and so is today,” He said tilting his head up like their opinions didn’t matter.
“We’re going to stay an extra 30 minutes then,” Leo informs him and turned to me. “I train him and Genevive.”
I was a bit impressed hearing Leo talk a bit more compared to earlier, “Is it weight-training?”
“No! We are not discussing this when food is on the way,” Andre chimed in, turning towards me. “Michael, please, I’ll behave if we don’t talk about working out. My caffs still hurt from last weeks.”
Lucas shook his head. “Then stop having cheat days.”
I glanced at the two and it made me a bit curious, but I didn’t know if I should ask about their relationship. “It’s fine. My boyfriend used to be on the volleyball team and I had him train me so I can try out in my last year of high school. It was really brutal.”
“I tried out for tennis when I was in high school,” Genevive said as the waiter brought us our drinks and she sighed heavily. “I wasn’t very good, but my mom just wanted me on the team while I was secretly taking drama class and I decided to pick one.”
“And that’s the story of her starting career,” Elaine said, patting Genevives hand like she’s very proud of her.
“So, you both don’t mind the career path you’ve chose? It’s different compared to each other and it’ll be difficult seeing each other.” I asked them, hoping my question won’t offend them.
“Well, it’s already hard to see each other now,” Genevive said, glancing at Elaine and gave her a smile. “I have rehearsal and art class then there is showcase performances.”
“While medical does take a lot of my time, I do need to complete volunteer hours at a medical center, and I work part-time on weekends,” Elaine said looking down at her cup before turning to me. “We use our study sessions and the support group to unwind.”
“Don’t get to add in that they live together,” Lucas tells them and the waiter returned to the table placing our meals on the table.
“You do?” I asked.
“Yeah,” Genevive mumbled; I can see that she’s blushing.
“It’s new for us still, but we do and that makes it easier between us honestly,” Elain answered and nudged Lucas. “It’s only been six months.”
“That’s already a long time. Why are you guys still shy about it?” Andre asked as he started devouring his food.
“People don’t always react nicely knowing that we’re living together,” Genevive said with her mouthful. “Besides, my parents keep reminding me that we’re moving too fast.”
I thought about the conversation Elliot and I had the other day when he asked if he is family to me. “So you guys are like family?”
Elaine raised an eyebrow before looking at Genevive, “Yeah?”
Genevive giggled as she reached for her cup of soda, “I never thought of it like that.”
I looked down at my food and wondered about their relationship compared to my own with Elliot. For a second, I thought I saw Lucas looking over at me, but we continued on eating until we were full. Maybe that was silly of me to ask and hope their answers would be the same as ours unless I just want to believe that the words he says can be the same for others as well. I probably wished to have some relations since this is my first time meeting a couple that is like me; having a partner of the same-sex. Did they had any hardships? Did everyone also deal with the same thing I did?
Once we were all done, we started making our way out after paying and they all still had the same energy as we started walking out. I think maybe I shouldn’t try to compare their past to my own, but I do want to know more about them and learn as well. There was more that I should know and maybe coming to their support group would be a nice change. I was about to pull out my phone checking the time when Lucas had me follow him to the car offering me another ride and Andre followed along.
“I’ll drop Andre off first then take you,” Lucas said as he unlocked his car.
“You don’t have to…”
“Don’t say no. Lucas will keep persistent until you agree,” Andre said opening the door for me and made a hand motion for me to enter the car. “After you sir.”
I pressed my lips together and stepped inside the car, “Thank you.”
It was a bit quiet during the ride except for Andre singing along to a few songs playing on the radio and when arriving at an apartment complex Andre stepped out. He opened my door to have me move to the front and started driving off once we saw Andre head inside. It was a bit weird now that we’re alone and I put my address in Lucas’s phone for directions. I wasn’t too sure of what to say or how to even start a conversation since it’s been a while since I’ve tried making new friends after starting college.
“Hey, come to our next meeting,” Lucas said parking his car once arriving at my house and turned to me. “I think it’ll be good. It seems like there are a few things you’re curious about.”
“Is it that obvious?” I asked looking down at my backpack that’s on my lap.
“Yes… But it’s not like it’s a bad thing to be curious.” He said sitting back in his seat. “Bring your boyfriend along.”
“Are you and Andre a couple?” I asked, turning to him.
“What?”
“It just… You guys seem really close,” I explained, shyly.
Lucas sighed and rubbed his forehead, “We did try to go out a few times, but I think we both agreed that we were better than just friends and it really worked out in the end.” he paused after finishing his sentence then glanced over at me. “I hope I was rude by pushing you to join us afterward. I know you hardly know us and we can be very loud.”
I shook my head, “No… I had fun. Thanks for inviting me and letting me come along. You were right about them and they are very welcoming.”
Lucas ran his fingers over his hair and I forget that he has tattoos as it show from the sleeve of his jacket. “It’s good you enjoy it. I think some of them enjoyed entertaining you so they must have had fun.”
I opened my door and stepped out. “It shows. Then I’ll see you later on.”
“Alright,” He said giving me a small wave. “See you around.”
