The test required them, as dictated by Ms. Todd, to run short distances, long distances, throw at targets, participate in teams, and finally a blood draw for the humans performed in front of the vampire students. The vampire students were ushered by some staff members to the left side of the gym, to what Zoe assumed were the locker rooms. Zoe and her class remained for a bit to discuss the last part of the test with Ms. Todd.
“Okay students, I know this is sudden, but we need to verify that our partner program is set up correctly. Any time you get a cut, scratch your skin, pick a scab, or do anything that draws blood, one of your partners could lose control and attack you. But your specific partner was chosen to not do that and be able to defend you from the others.” explained Ms. Todd.
All the students broke out into murmuring, gasping, or nervous chuckling.
One male student had to ask, “Do I have to do the blood draw? I am very, very, very afraid of needles.”
Ms. Todd sternly told the student “Yes, if you pass out from it, that is okay too.”
“Aww, sh*t,” the student barked.
“Okay, if there aren’t any more questions, you all can go in the men’s and women’s locker rooms to get changed. You will each find a locker with your name on it. It should have a long sleeve and short sleeve shirt, shorts, pants, and athletic shoes. Please wear the short sleeve shirt, and you may choose to wear shorts or pants. Okay off you go” Ms. Todd announced, trying to be encouraging.
Zoe followed her classmates into the locker room, then to the women’s section. All the female students spoke casually trying to find their lockers, which were located on either side of a wooden bench. Lily and Jackie found their lockers towards the entrance of the room, while Zoe had to travel further down past the other girls. Before Zoe could even open her locker, which was not locked, she heard shrieks about how cute the uniform was. Zoe quickly opened her locker to see that there was a gray short-sleeve shirt with a coat of arms in red on the front left breast and when she turned the shirt over the back contained the same design. The center of the coat of arms contained a red shield with a red crow on the right and a red outline of an owl on the left of it. Zoe felt a slight chill from the design. The crow felt quite menacing to her, while the owl was expressly stern.
Zoe took the shirt and found the long sleeve which was also gray underneath with the same design. The shorts and pants were both red breathable athletic cloth. Zoe has not changed in a locker room in quite some time, since the freshman year of high school, and wanted to see what the other girls were doing as they were changing. She saw Lily and Jackie and the other girls, pulling everything off without any specific comments to their undergarments, so Zoe did the same. She didn’t feel that embarrassed, but still took her top off quickly, only to put the gray short-sleeve on immediately after, and then she did the same, with her jeans, choosing to wear the shorts rather than the pants. The other girls also chose shorts. Surprisingly, all the clothes in the lockers for each girl were already the right size, including the athletic shoes. None of the clothes looked too tight or loose on the girls and the shoes fit perfectly. Zoe shivered thinking the people that chose them knew more about the human students than she thought they knew.
Once all the girls were dressed, a few of them checked the mirrors for their hair and makeup. Zoe didn’t wear heavy makeup and touched her face so much that it was already all gone, so she didn’t bother with the makeup, but she did pull her thick, medium-long hair up into a ponytail checking in the mirror for any loose strands of hair. When Zoe was done, she waited with the other girls who were done with the mirror, and once everyone was done, they left together to return to the gym. The vampires were already on the court with the male humans, waiting for them to come out of the locker room. When they did all, their eyes were on them. Zoe could feel the male humans eyeing their shorts, and the vampires rolled their eyes at how long it took for them to come out. For a brief second, Zoe made eye contact with Josh, who seemed even more upset at her.
