There's a slight weight on her lap. Small hands are poking at her cheeks and exploring her hair and face with curiosity. Sara opens her eyes and looks down into big aqua eyes framed by pale blue hair, like cotton candy. The little girl grins when she realizes that Sara is awake and giggles, clapping her hands together. It's like looking at a younger version of Alice and, full of equal parts awe and grief, Sara reaches up and touches the child's cheek. She knows she was too late, but it still hurts.
