"What happened to ya? Did you rise from the dead?"
They laughed. Cameron and his friends kept tossing my phone like it's his toy.
Im getting really infuriated.
"Oi! Mah boi Robin! Look at this chic over here....waiting for a phone call! HAHAHAHHA"
He called out his friend Robin who seems to not give a damn about what's going on. I stared at him and he did the same. Instead of helping.. He walked away.
I just stood there. Debating whether I should punch him to death or keep trying to win my phone back.
"I've changed. I promised myself I won't hurt anyone. But these guys just gotta test me to the limits eh?"
I thought to myself. Trying to stay calm at the situation.
"Oh, Oi Mary Poppins!"
"It's Mei."
"Meh, whatever, ya phone's ringin by the way."
He said, swinging my phone, playfully tapping on it. My heart was beating fast.
"Give it back now."
I said so firmly. My fist itching to punch.
I need to answer that. My life depends on it.
"Or what? Dissappear again? Or are ya gonna beat me up like what you did to that kid last time.
You see Mary Poppins, I have more muscle than you.
So let's see who'll end up in the school clinic."
He stared with pure confidence in his eyes.
Disgusting.
" Ya damn phone keeps ringing Mary Poppins"
"Then give me the damn phone!"
I said, I don't think I'll be able to handle this nice act for too long.
I think his friends noticed the boiling anger in me. They stood up and tried to convince him to give it back.
"Aye man, you had your fun. Give it back now."
"ye, she looks like she'll go killing spree on ya"
I couldn't focus at all. My eyes only stared at the ringing phone in his hands. I was begging to God to not end the dialing number.
"Psh, ya guys scared of a friken girl? She doesn't even look like she can lift a finger!"
That's it. I've had enough. I ran to him at full speed. Grabbed the phone and answered it, my foot on his face. Ready to squash the life out of him.
"Hello Sir? I apologize for answering so late, I-"
"What the hell!? I've been calling repetitively! If you wanna get the job, ya gotta be punctual. Thats important! Just by calling you multiple times, you couldn't do it right on time, how much more if you got the job kiddo!?
I got many applicants who SEEM to work better than you.
"Sir, please give me a chance-"
"No, you applied because you needed it. This job is important! But you don't seem like the type to be serious about it. Try another job that'll handle your laziness."
"No, sir please If you'd just give me the chance I-"
He hung up on me.
........
"See what you did Cameron?"
I held my phone to his face.
"He hung up on me."
My foot pressing harder and harder by the minute
"Huh..you guys.. Sure don't know what it's like to live life outside comfort."
At this point. I lost all hope. Im done.
"YOU GUYS DON'T GIVE A DAMN BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS HANDED TO YOU!"
I screamed, I cried, I couldn't take it anymore.
All my hope.. Washed away.
"YOU DON'T KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO WANDER AROUND AT NIGHT, CLINGING TO THAT HOPE THAT ONE DAY, EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE
THE HORROR OF BEING WITH PEOPLE YOU DON'T KNOW, BUT RISK EVERYTHING TO MAKE A LIVING.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE PAIN AND FEAR OF LOSING EVERYTHING YOU'VE WORKED HARD FOR!
THE NEVER ENDING CURSE OF RUNNING AWAY FROM PEOPLE WHO WANT YOU DEAD.
THAT FEELING OF BEING SHUT SILENT BECAUSE NO ONE KNOWS YOU OR EVEN RISK TO LIFT A FINGER TO HELP YOU! "
At this point, Im going crazy. All I could do was pour my sorrow into these bastards.
Some tried to console me, but I pushed them away. Signaling a beating if they step any closer.
" YOU GUYS WILL NEVER KNOW
THE FEELING OF NOT HAVING A HOME
THE FEELING OF GOING HUNGRY EVERY NIGHT
THE FEAR OF WAKING UP EVERYDAY JUST TO RUN ALL OVER AGAIN.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE STRUGGLE
OF DOING EVERYTHING ON YOUR OWN AND ACT LIKE EVERYTHING IS ALRIGHT!"
....
" You guys never thought of that. Because everything is handed to you. "
I said, my heart aching, my eyes tired of staying open. My body, shaking and freezing.
" Yet all of you still find reasons to complain about how miserable your life is."
"All of you."
I pointed at everyone around me.
"All of you.. Neglect what you have and envy what others do. All of you neglect the people who strive hard for your survival."
"All of you..worthless bastards who think nothing more than your wellbeing, your fame, your name."
"So, don't question or even dare to mimic my life. You know nothing.. And what you guys did today.."
"I looked at Cameron, his chin so high, his pride still eating the best of him.
" Thank you for taking away my last chance to better my damn life. "
I said and walked away.
I spent the last of my savings to buy a bottle of beer.
I looked old enough so they gave me some. Others dont care.
The last of my savings, that I planned for dinner, now wasted for a damn bottle of beer. I just want it to end. I want everything to wash away. I want to feel light.
"Mei?"
I heard my voice echo from a distance. A familiar voice that gave me the sense of comfort.
I don't know who owns it, but it gives me peace.
I turned around and saw my advisor. He saw the bottle of beer around my hand, and here I expected a long damn speech and going to that damn principal's office.
"Look, I'm having it rough, so if you plan to scold me for this."
I held the bottle up high
"Please scold me tomorrow. I don't have the energ-
" May I join you? "
My eyes widened. My teacher wants to have a drink with a student? Not only is it creepy and disturbing, but it's hella weird.
" Look, I don't wanna be rude-"
" One bottle of beer please"
He asked the owner of the small store.
We were walking, finding a place to crash and relax.
"This seems fine."
he said, a tiny store that held tables and chairs. It wasn't that far from school so I figured its safe.
We sat down, I felt really awkward and uncomfortable. My teacher having a shot if beer with his student?
"Don't worry, my tolerance for alcohol is higher than the sky. And if you think I might do something to ya, well ya thought wrong. I don't have a kink for young nutheads.
I just figured you needed company. So I volunteered."
He said, drinking from the bottle of liquor he bought.
"What's the catch?"
I asked. I'm sure he wanted something in return.
Everyone wants something in return.
"Nothing, I'll just be here if you want a ranting buddy. I heard you yelling at those bastards a while ago. So I figured there's still more ya wanted to pour out. I mean, that's why ya brought beer aye?"
"Heh, I suppose."
After a period of silence, he asked me something that made me burst into tears.
"Are you alright?"
I was silent. The tears pouring down, and the sobs that grew louder by the second, came crashing down.
