It was five minutes until dinner and Suzu was anxious. Not so much about seeing Arata and Hinata again or being around a ton of people—Hinata had a huge family—no, he was more anxious about showing up late. And that was a fair fear considering Saku had been in the bathroom for over an hour and a half with no signs of coming out yet. The hairdryer had been running for at least forty-five minutes and Suzu could only imagine that it meant Saku wasn’t even close to getting ready. He didn’t want to rush the redhead, but this was a little ridiculous.
He knocked on the door, “Um, Saku, we’re cutting it pretty close and I—”
He was interrupted by the door opening and on the other side, his date greeted him with a stunning smile and a very put-together look.
“Sorry Suzu-kun, I sometimes get stuck trying to figure out what kind of hairstyle to do with suits and then my eyeliner was totally not cooperating.”
Suzu just gaped at him, taking in the other’s appearance. A slim-fitting, immaculate dark blue suit, his hair tied back in a neat, low ponytail, and his eyes perfectly accented with dark eye makeup. Saku looked amazing and Suzu felt completely underdressed by comparison.
“Wow,” was all he could manage to say.
“Awww thanks, boyfriend. I expect this will pass at dinner?”
“Definitely. Though, I’m afraid someone will attempt to steal you away from me.”
Saku walked towards him, holding onto Suzu’s arm.
“Don’t worry Suzu-kun, I’ve only got eyes for you.”
He knew it was just for show. That he was teasing and sticking to their act. But it still didn’t stop the butterflies from fluttering in his stomach.
“Let’s uh…let’s go, yeah?”
“Lead the way, darling.”
To say dinner was chaotic would almost be an understatement. The restaurant was filled with Arata and Hinata’s family when Suzu and Saku walked in. Suzu had met most of them through wedding planning, but it still felt weird to be around so many people he was barely acquainted with. He was honestly starting to feel a bit overwhelmed—maybe he didn’t really need to be there, maybe they could just go up to the room and get room service and—
He suddenly felt Saku’s hand in his. He looked down to see the other smiling softly and gave his hand a gentle squeeze.
“Everything ok, babe?”
“Now it is,” Suzu couldn’t help himself from saying.
It was surprising how being around Saku calmed him down so easily. The other man just had an effect on him. It was a nice feeling, either way. Something he could get used to.
Not that he should, of course.
“Suzu! Saku-san!” came Hinata’s voice among the crowd.
Suzu heard Saku take a deep breath but then he cheerfully responded.
“Hina-chan!”
The look on Hinata’s face was priceless. It was as if he had found his new best friend in the entire world.
For a moment, Suzu found it adorable and he was so happy he’d brought Saku but then there was a wave of guilt. Saku wasn’t going to be around after the wedding. He’d have to come up with some story about how they broke up and Hinata would probably be crushed. And it’d all be because of Suzu’s insecurity and desperation.
This had been a serious mistake.
He wanted to stop this before it got too far. He wasn’t a liar. He wasn’t someone who tricked others. This had to end before he got too far.
But then, Saku squeezed his hand again before interlacing their fingers and looked up at him, that sweet smile on his face. Suzu breathed a little easier. It was going to be fine. This was going to work out because Saku was there to help him.
“Saku-san you look amazing!” Hinata gushed when he made it over to them, “I really do wish you’d be in my wedding party!”
Saku laughed and embraced the blonde, “I told you, I’d be up for it if you need me too. And look at you, little groom-to-be! How is Arata keeping his hands off of you?”
Hinata practically beamed at the praise and Suzu almost wondered if he’d need sunglasses the next time Saku complimented him.
The two talked rapidly, Suzu barely keeping up (he was pretty sure they started with designer clothes and then somehow ended up on food?) until someone from Hinata’s family came over to steal the blonde away.
