Dante sat far back from Elis body. The unconscious boy was laid before the open window in the attic of an abandoned building. Dantes cloak lay beneath the boy, not much of a cushion on the hard floor.
His mind was racing.
This frail human was a vessel for his lord Lucifer? It explained the strange aura he had felt around him when he had bumped into him those couple times, but it made no sense. This human was so weak. He felt as if he had no life force in him. His lord had never told him about this vessel either. Why keep it from him?
Dante sighed and ran his clawed fingers through his hair, stopping when it reached the tight ponytail at the base of his neck. He wrenched at his own hair in anger. "You pitiful excuse for a Demon! You dare to lay a hand on your Lords vessel?!"
But Dante couldn't have known better, right? What other human would be surround by such a strong celestial aura? Most were only saints and martyrs in his long life's experience.
"Protect this child, no matter the cost."
Lucifers voice echoed in his mind on repeat after having heard his request back in the alleyway.
A Human! An order was an order, he never questioned his lords word, there must be a reason this child was the vessel Lucifer had chosen.
Especially now that the heavens had started fighting hell once again, as well as amongst themselves to choose which of the higher ranked angels would become the new god.
Yes, God had abandoned humanity and his angels long ago. For what reason, Dante didn't know or care. He didn't favor that god his lord Lucifer looked up to so mightily. Even now, eons after his exile from heaven into hell, whenever that being was mentioned around his lord, His eyes would light up with such affection. It made absolutely no sense to the demon.
Eli stirred and groaned, his hands reaching up and rubbing at this neck. Dante glanced over and tried to conceal the look of disgust on his face. The boys eyes opened, now a warm golden brown. His lord Lucifer was no longer there. Eli sat up and looked out the window and then around him. Not seeming to notice Dante across the room, Eli crawled up onto his knees.
"where am I..?"
Dante scoffed and the boy jumped in surprise.
"You're in a house. Obviously."
Elis eyes focused on Dante and he jumped back, quickly looking out the window to see if it was too high for him to jump from to escape.
"You can relax, human. I am forbade from harming you again."
Dantes distaste for the order rang clear in his tone.
"What do you mean?"
Eli was still very much on edge. Everything was fuzzy in his mind, but he remembered.. This man had Killed him.
How was it possible he was alive now?
"You," Dante pointed a finger at Eli. "Are my lord Lucifers vessel."
"Devils whores spawn" Whispered in the back of Elis mind, the taunts and names he had been called since he could remember.. It was all true?
"A vessel? I don't understand.."
"Of course you wouldn't understand. You're just a weak human with no knowledge of anything. You are a tool for my lord to save his powers during a war. A storage container, like a jar." Dante shrugged. "You are used in case there is an attack against his followers and comrades, demons, in a battle he cannot make in his present form."
Eli slid down the edge of the window and sat on the floor. His eyes glanced down at the cloak he had been laid upon and he reached out a hand without thinking, throwing it at the man.
He felt like his blood was boiling, tears welled up in his eyes.
"Get out! Whoever you are, just leave! I've had enough of this! Ever since I could remember hearing insults of me being a Devils whores spawn! I don't believe your bullshit lies."
The doubt of his own words rang in his voice, even he could hear it well himself.
The demon got up and stared down at Eli as if he were ready to strike out at him. After a moment, he sighed.
"I understand. You need time. Pray to your.. God.. And see if he will offer you guidance and tell you himself what you are."
"I believe in no god." Eli spat out at the demon. Dante blinked, quickly hiding his look of surprise. As the boy shouted out before him, he felt, a sudden spark in his life force. It wasn't as weak as he had felt before.
Without another word, he turned and left the room, hearing muffled sobbing behind him as he descended the stairs into darkness.
