A Kiss Across Borders

Eight: Flying Bouquet

Eight: Flying Bouquet

Nov 20, 2020

I froze for a moment. It looked like Silvia, but I wasn't sure. Either way, I couldn't risk it being her.

I can't let her see Caroline.

"We gotta go, bro," Liam yanked my arm, snapping me back to reality. The girls were already racing back inside the market when I turned around and ran after them.

"Are you sure it was her, Javier?" Caroline asked as we caught up.

"I'm not sure—"

"I don't think it's worth the risk to find out," Liam cut in.

"I agree," Sofia nodded. "We can get out through the back entrance." Then she stepped forward and led the way.

We weaved our way through the sea of people, hurrying towards the back. I thought I saw possibly Silvia come inside; I warned the others, and we started bolting.

When we got to the back entrance, by one of the flower shops, we crashed into a woman holding a bouquet of white roses. We watched in horror as the flowers flew out of the woman's hands and sailed through the air in slow motion. The bouquet landed on the street and then got run over by a taxi.

"Oh, my God!" Caroline gasped.

Sofia's hands were over her mouth, and Liam looked stunned.

"I am so sorry," I said, approaching the woman, "I'll pay for the flowers and buy you some new ones."

As the woman turned around, I noticed that her brown hair was all done up, and she was wearing a shiny floral headband.

Great. We just ruined her wedding day.

"Thank you," she said, facing me with black mascara running down her face. "But I knew something like this would happen to me today."

Caroline reached into her purse and handed the bride a tissue.

"Thanks, hun," she said and began wiping her face. "I knew I shouldn't have gone to see Fabio this morning", she sobbed.

"Fabio?" Sofia asked.

"Yes," the woman smiled sadly, "my fiancé-I went to see him this morning because I had just found out that none of my friends or family would be coming to the wedding. I knew it was bad luck to see the groom before the wedding, but I didn't know who else to turn to." She started crying again.

When the girls went over to try and console her, she told us her name was Lisa Thompson.

"What time is it now?" Lisa asked, gesturing to my watch.

"It's ten to eleven," I replied.

She shook her head. "I'm supposed to get married at the cathedral in an hour. Fabio's whole family's going to be there, and my side of the church is going to be empty. I almost asked the woman at the reception desk at the hotel to be my maid of honour because my supposed best friend decided not to show up either. But then Fabio said he'd ask his sister to step in for me so at least that's one problem fixed."

Lisa blew her nose with the tissue. "But I still have no bridesmaids, and my stupid brothers were supposed to be the ushers. They knew how important this was to me. But that's it, they can stay and die in Ohio for all I care! One day! That's all I asked them for. One day!"

Caroline rubbed Lisa's back and asked, "Is there anything we can do to help?"

Lisa snorted at the question. "I don't suppose you and your friend want to be my bridesmaids?"

Caroline and Sofia looked at each other, then at us. I looked at Liam, and we both shrugged.

"I guess it's the least we could do for ruining your flowers," Caroline said.

"Yeah," Sofia nodded.

"Oh, you two are just dolls," Lisa beamed. "Think you could convince your boyfriends to be ushers?"

"Oh, they're not our-"

Liam cleared his throat, interrupting Sofia. "We'd be happy to be the ushers at your wedding, ma'am."

"Really? Thank you so much," Lisa replied, "you guys are awesome."

I was about to pay the florist for a new bouquet when Lisa stopped me and paid for them. She said helping with her wedding was payment enough. Then Lisa handed the girls a wad of Euros and gave them the address of a store where they could find dresses.

"I don't care what they look like as long as they're purple and they match," Lisa said, "and get some shoes that go with the dresses."

She turned to us and put another wad of Euros in Liam's hand, and told us where we could get the clothes she wanted us to wear.

"Get grey pants and white button-down shirts, uh short sleeve ones. Make sure everything matches. Don't worry about shoes," Lisa added, "the ones you're wearing are fine."

Finally, Lisa gave us the address of the hotel where she was staying.

"Just tell the lady at the desk that you're here for the Thompson-Motisi wedding," Lisa continued, "and please try to get back as soon as possible. I'm going to see if I can get this fixed," she gestured to her face.

Then she crossed the street, heels clicking, bouquet in hand and unlocked a black Audi with tinted windows.

"See you soon," Lisa waved before getting in and driving away.

That's when I noticed Sofia looked like she had just seen a ghost.

"You okay, babe?" Liam asked her.

Sofia shook her head. "No, and I think I know why her family didn't show for the wedding."

"Why?" I furrowed my brow.

"Because her fiancé's last name is Motisi—Motisi as in the Sicilian Mafia," she replied.

Javier has had a crush on his friend, Caroline, for the last two years. But he's never told her how he feels. One morning, Javi decides to take Caroline on an adventure he hopes she'll never forget, even if it might land him in jail.

It's the last summer before university, and Javier Giordano is in Monaco, spending most of his time on his dad's yacht. But for Javi, the best part about being in Monaco is getting to see Caroline. They're just friends, but he wishes they were more. One night, Javier throws a party on the yacht, and things were going well until he danced with a girl who Caroline cannot stand. It was a momentary lapse in judgment, helped by some beer, but now he wants to make it up to her. So while Caroline is asleep in his room, Javi comes up with a plan to go on an adventure around the Mediterranean Coast. But on their impromptu trip, Javier, Caroline and their friends discover more than they bargained for.
