Hmmm. I just reread the whole thing, and I'm thinking everything here is connected to Toivo's murder ghost/ex, the one that was in the short about photos and that almost killed him in chapter 3. He and Derek both have the same scar on their hand, and Toivo was pretty young looking in the short, so that could be why he couldn't remember Derek. If Derek and his ex were/are part of the same cult thing, that would also explain why she couldn't be photographed, because she was a known member of the cult which is probably outlawed for preforming necromancy.
