The Color Red

1~Mykie~

1~Mykie~

Nov 28, 2020

I was running as fast as I possibly could. My heart was pounding in my chest and ringing in my ears. I'm going to die here.

"Red! Red! I repeat, there's a Red!" They were yelling over and over again. Adding more guards as I moved along the street. I'm going to die. I took a quick left into a small neighborhood and ran down a set of stairs. It was a shortcut to my home.

"We've practiced this many times. Come on Mykie." I had to reassure myself because I felt like I was going to die. "Follow the path." Once in my house, I grabbed the emergency bag that we kept hidden. It had money, maps, extra clothes, blankets, canned food; the basic necessities. I added a few of my own—all of our pictures. "I guess this is farewell," I said while biting my lip. "I'm sorry that it ended up like this," I mumbled before running out of my old house. "Follow the map. You'll be okay."

I got on a train that took me far away. As far as it could possibly take me where no one would know who I was. I'll be okay. Mykie, everything will be okay.

I'm a Red. The worst color you could be.

Your class level and position in life is decided the day you are born. A simple check of the hair color is all that needed to be done. There are only 6 colors you could possibly be. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple. Each of the colors have their own meaning.

Blue is your royalty class. The king, queen, prince, princess, and so on all live in their big castle which sits on the highest hill on the land. They are the highest rank of the kingdom and no one could beat them. Whatever they say, goes, and that's how it is.

Yellows are the farmers of each kingdom. You can always seem them working out in the field or passing their crops for an Orange to sell. They live farther out in the kingdom where there is plenty of land to grow their crops.

Purples are the knights and guards. Most of them work with the Blues and if they aren't working there then they work outside of the kingdom making sure everyone is safe.

Oranges are servants and merchants. They work in the kingdom tending to the Royals' needs. Butlers, maids, chefs, and others are usually what you can find. If they don't work there then you can see them serving for the commoners. A chef, vendor, baker, plumber, teacher, and so on.

Green are the commoners. There is nothing special about them. The children attend regular school. The adults are stay-at-home parents. Their only job is to tend for their children, spouse, and house. They earn profit by being loyal to the Blues which is how they afford anything.

Red is the worst you could possibly be. Thieves, murderers, rapists, and kidnappers are what they are. Rarely you would find a Red being non-hostile. It's in their blood to be a criminal. Only a small percentage of people end up being red and if they are they never make it past their thirties.

My mom was 33 and my father was 36 when they died. My little sister was only 4 and I, the only survivor was 16.

It felt like seconds when everything was taken away from me. It all happened so fast. My family and I were out on a stroll, deciding that it was time to buy clothes. We were always extra careful when we left the house, but we weren't careful enough.

A lady let out a loud gasp followed by a shriek. Everyone turned to her as she muttered out the word Red. Everyone began to search the ground as we tried to leave, but we were eventually caught. As soon as a pair of Purple men found out, they grabbed their weapons and pointed them in our direction.

"Mykie, Lilly," my dad mumbled, trying to give us directions. Though, he never got to. My parents, shot and killed, then Lilly shortly after. All because their wig didn't cover most of their hair.

As I watched my family die the Purples pointed their guns at me, but I was quick. I ran out of the crowded street trying to escape my doom. And I did. The first train available took me straight to my new home. Indixous.

I sat on the farthest seat from the front. The train was mostly empty other than a pair of Greens who were occupied with whatever they were watching. I pulled my bag close to my chest and let out a soft sigh.

I couldn't believe what just happened. I couldn't believe how I was still alive. I should have died, but I didn't. I survived and now was on a train to start a new life. By myself. The thought of being on my own made me shutter. I was so dependent on my family. Not only for the basic necessities but for love and social needs. But I was suddenly by myself.

"Hello, everyone. It's your captain speaking. If your stop is Indixous, well, you're in luck. The train will come to a halt, and you'll be in Indixous. Be prepared to exit the train. With that, thank you for riding with us." I grabbed my bag and put it on my shoulders securing it tightly.

"Thank you sir," I muttered to the conductor who stood outside of the train.

"Of course, young man." I walked straight out of the train station and into the kingdom. It was littered with people of all different colors, but no Red. I would have felt much better if a single Red was in the open, but there was none. It only made sense, most kingdoms banned Reds.

I began to walk around the main town, trying to find a place to stay. But every hotel I saw was posh and looked expensive. After some time, I found a small run-down hotel with few cars in the parking lot.

"Hello?" I walked up to a lady at the front desk. "I need a room," I said softly.

"No parents?" I shook my head. "More and more kids are requesting rooms without parents. It's almost worrisome." She furrowed her perfectly groomed eyebrows, then shook her head. "What's your name, sweetheart?" The girl grabbed a pen getting ready for my name.

"It's Mykie, Mykie Sherman," I said making up a random last name.

"Okay, hun, room 137." The young lady handed me the key with a sad smile. "You can only stay for ten days, but if you are leaving earlier come back here a day in advance when you are ready to check out."

"Thank you." I followed the signs until I found my room. It wasn't very nice looking, but I expected that. Most hotels that were cheap were unkept. Not often do you find nice hotels that are inexpensive.

Ten days. I need to find a small apartment in ten days. The currency we earned went straight to our bag just in case we needed to flee and were in a rush.

"Almost ten thousand dollars," I whispered to myself. "Find the cheapest apartment, pay around 120 for the hotel, and use the rest for food and rent." I pulled out a small piece of paper and a pen while jotting all of this down. "If I stay in that range I should have enough money for a couple of months." I dropped the pen and began to pace around the room. "Once I get the apartment I'll have to register as a resident of Indixous to get the money." I sighed. "Why do I have to be alone?" I covered my eyes, trying to hold back any tears.

Mom, Dad, Lilly? How do I go on? Do you think I can make it? Do you think I'll survive? Why you and not me?

I pulled my knees close to my chest. "Why did I have to be the one to survive?" I asked myself. "No, Mykie, stop. Don't think like this. You survived for a reason, you can't just give up. They wouldn't want that. Dad would want me to keep going. Lilly would tell me not to give up. Mom would cheer me on. You can do this." I took my jacket sleeve and brought it to my eyes to wipe away my tears. "You got this," I reassured myself.

It took a while, but I managed to bring myself out of my hotel room and into the streets of the kingdom. Everyone seemed to get along with each other. The Greens were talking to the Purples like they were pals. Yellows walked around happily with their crops. This was nothing like Dougtry.

My old kingdom was terrible. If you were Orange, you wouldn't talk to anyone other than Orange unless they are Blue or a Purple. It was a breath of fresh air to see everyone getting along.

While I stared in awe at my surroundings I ran face-first into something... well someone.

"I'm so sorry," I looked back at the person making my eyes grow. "You're—"
