That night Zoe fell asleep as soon as her head touched her pillow, easily pushing the events from today away in exchange for dreams. Josh, on the other hand, who was barely tired at night as per usual with vampires, couldn't take his mind off of Zoe’s breach of his personal space. He tried to think about whether it was okay that Zoe touched him or not. Honestly, he didn’t dislike it, but he didn’t want to entertain the idea that it was something that could lead to romance. Josh always felt that he would be better off alone, with no friends, no love, no expectations. Any time he had connected with someone they always left, or he left, and then it was as if they were gone forever. Love was also something he just couldn’t believe in. He saw how his parents argued and yelled since he was born. Josh only wanted to rely on himself because he was the only person he could trust. Having pushed all his feelings down, Josh retired to his bed in the early morning for a few hours of sleep.
The next morning was just as structured as the previous day. At breakfast, there were a smaller number of tables, than there were at dinner. The vampires and humans ate within a few tables of each other. In a way, the vampires were forced to sit closer to the humans, because the available tables were located near the humans’ buffet. Zoe was fighting off a yawn while eating an omelet. She slept well because she was tired, but it didn’t seem to be enough. All the humans seemed tired too. Lily and Jackie were unusually quiet, and the boys were yawning one right after the other too. When breakfast was finished, Ms. Todd appeared to escort the students to the gym. She announced that the schedule from here on out was, Breakfast, gym, lunch, class, and finally dinner.
Zoe was kind of bummed, that the whole class was going through everything all together. She had hoped that there would be some sort of special class for people who did better on the tests at least. She didn’t want to waste her time here learning things she already knew and being let out into the human world behind everyone else. Although Zoe might be at the same level or thereabout as everyone else and thus teaching them all together would make sense. Either way, Zoe was both excited and nervous. Excited to get the ball rolling in her education, but nervous that she crossed a line with Josh last night and now must interact with him again. She did say she was sorry, and she was half-asleep, so it should be fine, right?
A few hallways and stairs and the class was at the gym. Ms. Todd seemed eager to start the class, so she asked everyone to change right away. In the locker room, Zoe eerily found her gym clothes cleaned and folded in her locker. She changed into the shorts, the short sleeve shirt, and the shoes. In the mirror, she pulled her hair back into a ponytail and was ready. Theresa and Reina were both walking outside the locker room, so Zoe followed behind them. As these two girls were athletic, they were both quite tall. They probably each had a foot plus in height over Zoe. Their vampire partners were those two females that only seemed interested in drinking blood straight from a human’s vein or artery.
When everyone was finished changing, they gathered around Ms. Todd awaiting instruction. “Today you will be working in pairs, we’ll focus on hand-eye coordination for a while. Now form your pairs and do some stretching.” ‘Oh no,’ thought Zoe initially, till she realized that it would be good to break their tension. The humans gave each other a see you later look before walking towards their vampire partners. Zoe glanced towards Josh on her way over to him, he was also wearing the short sleeve shirt and shorts, he didn’t seem to react to having to work with her, he didn’t even roll his eyes like the last time. Although Zoe wanted to apologize again, she thought better of it and just held her left elbow with her right arm, when she stood in front of him.
