Fade Into Blue

Four: Prelude (Part 1)

Four: Prelude (Part 1)

Nov 30, 2020

Luke waited for an answer as he took a bite off the sandwich in his hands. Sighing, I went on and told him about the drowning incident. I left the part that I met someone, which was the same man whom I just saved from the brink of death. I just basically told him I saved the man's life. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.

"Shit, Reidyr." I knew it's bad when he called me by my first name. I pointed the knife I was holding towards him. "You better not say anything to my parents or else, I swear to God, Luke." I deadpanned. His eyes bore into my face, trying to process the whole thing. Imagine if I told him that I spoke with the man, had deep conversations with him under the moonlight by the beach and slept with him.

Well, I just literally slept with him before leaving him on his bed.

All this talk was starting to give me a slight headache.

"But are you okay now?" I rolled my eyes. "If I wasn't, I wouldn't be here in front of you." A hint of frustration in my voice.

"Sorry," I apologized for snapping at him. Luke just gave a nod and smiled. "I couldn't believe that my best friend is a hero! A lifesaver!" I looked around the diner before snapping at him once again. "Keep your voice down!" I hissed under my breath. He let out a laugh. "In all seriousness Rei, you are amazing. Haven't I told you that?" I felt blood creep on my cheeks. "Yeah, yeah...I know." I joked.

Not much longer, we paid for our meal and went back to driving towards Portland. After a ton of playlists, stopovers, naps, we arrived at Portland. Lucas surprisingly still had his energy at an all time high, as if he didn't drive for what felt like more than twenty-four hours. "We're almost there! Aren't you excited?"

I made a small laugh. "A little," I replied. "I'm also a little scared." I earned a scowl from him.

"Why?"

"Well this is my first time moving away from my parents and you know, I'm going to live in a city where I basically do not know anyone apart from you. Gives me a feeling of excitement and nervousness at the same time." I bit my lip. "Oh, you'll be fine. The apartment that I found for you was just a few blocks away from my place."

"That's comforting." Luke drove further and scenery changed from seeing leafless trees, since it's almost autumn, to piles of concrete modern buildings, shops, and street signs. I can see people walking dressed in coats and scarves, letting me know it's cold outside. While we weaved through Portland traffic, Luke gave me a sort of tour of the shops, places to go while we're on my way to my new apartment.

Now that I sort of tried to implant the spots to visit once I have settled in, we stopped in front of a classic red-bricked building towering near the heart of the city. Luke turned the engine off. "We're here." He said and got out of the jeep. I blinked a few times, dumbfounded, and followed him out.

As soon as I got out, I looked up at the building, which I'm assuming, is my new apartment building. It looks like it was about thirty something stories tall. Luke dropped my luggage and leaned against the jeep beside me, his foot over the other and with crossed arms. I didn't realize that he was now wearing a tattered denim jacket.

It was indeed cold outside. I can see a light smoke coming out of our lips. "I'm going to live here?" I looked at him, trying to get a confirmation. He gave a smile. "Yup," he said, popping the p at the end. "Oh, hang on," he held a finger and dug something out of his jacket. He gave me a key with a small piano keychain.

"Here's the keys to your apartment." He placed the keys on my palm. "Let's go." He put an arm over my shoulder and we went inside my new apartment building.

I was glad that it was warm inside. We stopped by the front desk. A woman dressed in black dress, her hair tied in a neat bun gave as a smile "Hello sir, welcome to The Nest! How may I help you?" her voice was a little high pitched, but she gave out an endearing smile. When her eyes glazed over Luke, she had a look of surprise. "Oh, Mr. Anderson, my apologies, how may I help you sir?"

I looked at Luke with a questioning expression. "Hey Beth, my friend here," he went a little behind me and placed both of his hands on my shoulder. "Will now check in at apartment 1701." She nodded and went to her computer and typed some information. "Of course!" she said and then read something on her monitor.

"Mr. Fairchild?" I gave her a smile and nod. She grabbed a few papers at the shelves behind her and gave it to me with a pen. "Please fill out the form, for record keeping purposes. This is a prerequisite for all our tenants here. The monthly rate has been settled as well for the next three months; we will send you an email once the next bill is due." I frowned at her. "But I haven't paid- "

"Mr. Anderson here already paid your rent in advance." She said cutting me off. I gawked at Luke and he was looking up the ceiling, purposefully avoiding my eyes. "You didn't have to do that." I told him through gritted teeth. He just gave me a wink. I sighed in defeat.

"I'll pay you back once I've already settled in."

"Nonsense! Consider it as a gift for agreeing to move near me." I chuckled. Knowing that I wouldn't win in this argument. "Fine, but don't do anything like that next time, got it? You know I hate being a charity case."

"Oh, shut up! You know that's not true." He knows how I hate taking money from anyone. I finished filling out the papers and gave it back to the woman named Beth. "Enjoy your stay with us, Mr. Fairchild and you may always call the front desk should you need anything else. Have a pleasant stay." She held out a hand. I shook it and gave her a smile. We walked towards the elevator and I realized that my things are now in a trolley with the staff following us.

The interior of the whole building was modern and gave off an expensive feeling. There are security personnel at almost every corner of the building. While we waited for the elevator door to open, I looked at Luke. "So, I saw the rates of the apartment. I mean it was expensive and all but judging from the location of the building and the interiors, I could see why."

"Is the rate too high for you?" He asked worriedly. I shook my head. "No, I can manage but how are you able to get a place for me here? This place looks like it came from one of those Architectural Digest magazines."

I asked as the elevator door opened and we went in. Luke pressed the number seventeen and we started ascending the building. He smiled devilishly. "Also, how did that woman at the reception know you?" I pointed out. He gave a laugh. "Me and my business partner own a lot of businesses, including real estate, and rental properties. This building is one of them." My mouth dropped to the floor.

"Damn Luke. I didn't know you're a business tycoon now." He rolled his eyes and the elevator door opened. "A lot has changed over the past years, Snowflake."

Clearly. I thought.

The floor was divided into east and west wings. We went to the east wing of the floor and stopped in front of an 8-panel black double door. There was a metal plate beside the door that states the number 1701. He held out his palm, asking for the keys. I gave it to him and he unlocked the door. "Welcome home." He said as he swung both doors open. The staff placed the luggage by the entrance and closed the door behind us.

My eyes widened as I noticed how beautiful the whole place was. I automatically grabbed Luke's arm and gripped it tightly. The whole place was stunning.

It was a loft type apartment. We were standing a few steps from the entrance. In front of me was a modern black staircase matched with black railings going up, to what I assumed was the bedroom area. To my left was a kitchen. There was a long, black marble island counter in the middle and highchairs on one side while the other side there was a built-in sink. Everything was completely furnished. It seems my apartment was at the corner of the building. The scheme of the whole apartment was mainly white and black with a little bit of gold.

"So, do you like it?" he asked. I gaped at him.

"Like? The place is amazing! Are you kidding me?" I punched him on the shoulder. I started walking around my new apartment, and just trying to absorb everything in. The corner wall was made of a high ceiling glass window with a view of the whole city. There's a long black sectional sofa in front of a flat screen TV and a coffee table, with some ornaments and books on top of it, in between. Then, what took my breath away was my grand piano. It was situated near the floor to ceiling wall at the corner of the room.

"My baby!" I sat at the piano stool and ran my hand on the piano keys. The piano was my parents' gift when I got accepted in Julliard. I immediately lifted the fallboard and checked for the soundboards, strings, and dampers.

"I made sure to take care of your baby when we moved it here in your new apartment." He stood by the living area, his arms crossed and a smile on his face. I rushed to Luke and gave him a tight hug. "I don't know how you did it but thank you!" He chuckled and wrapped his arms around me tightly.

I noticed there were bookshelves with my books stored neatly and some of my music sheets were framed and were plastered on the wall. "So, the original copies of your music, I had them framed and put it on the wall." I smiled at Luke, obviously overjoyed on how he arranged everything for my apartment. He grabbed my hands. "Let's go upstairs." I nodded.

I guessed correctly. The bedroom was upstairs with two doors near the stairs. The color scheme was the same all throughout the place. It had a king-sized bed with a black headboard, a small office desk at the corner of the whole floor which I reckon would be a good place for meetings and conferences. The first door was a small walk-in closet.

The door next to it was my bathroom. There was a small shower, a toilet, a sink, and a tub near a window. On the other side of the room, near the office desk, there was a sheer floor to ceiling drape and behind it was a double door. Through those doors, there was a balcony. There's a small round table and two chairs on one side, good for morning coffee or tea, while there's a large potted plant on the other paired with high black metal railings.

There's also an overview of the whole city in my balcony and surprisingly it wasn't as noisy as I assumed it would be, considering my building seemed to be near the corporate district. "So, how did I do?" Luke was leaning on the side of the door frame with a smile on his face. "I love it." He fisted his hands in the air, as a sign of victory. I rolled my eyes.

"Seriously Luke, you've outdone yourself." He chuckled and placed his hands on my shoulder. "I'm glad you're happy. Welcome to your new home." I nodded and gave him a hug.

I absolutely have no idea how he did it. The whole apartment was perfect. I heard his stomach growl. A flush crept on his cheeks and I started laughing. "Let me cook something for you." I said as we both went down to the kitchen. I'm hoping my new place was stocked with something I can cook. I looked at the kitchen cabinets, and surprisingly, it was stocked with food. I looked at him.

"That was your mom's idea. Not mine." I rolled my eyes. Of course, it would be my mother's idea to fully stock my kitchen as soon as I arrived. I grabbed some uncooked pasta and looked at him. "Give me a few minutes," I told him and started cooking dinner for the both of us.

Virtuoso pianist Reidyr, a born workaholic, was coerced by his parents to go on a well-deserved vacation in Bali. Breaking his reverie was a mysterious drowning man who he ended up saving, but thought he'd never see again as he left Bali without knowing his name.

In a pursuit of independence, he moves to Portland where Lucas, his overprotective but well-meaning best friend, lives. In exchange for that independence, he meets Killian, who looks like he's been cut out of a men's magazine - flipping his whole world upside down. Meeting Killian was obnoxious for a lot of reasons, with the list beginning with:

1.) He's magnetically drawn to the guy.
2.) The man hates his existence to the core.
3.) Reidyr's not sure why number 2 is the case.

Reidyr finds himself whirled into a complicated dance with his career, friendships, and his growing attraction to Killian despite the odds. From disarray to more disarray, he navigates his Portland move with deep blue eyes, stumbling upon surprising revelations each day, not knowing if these will color him in, or leave him fading into blue.
