My life was anything but glamorous. I was an orphan, abandoned by my dead beat dad and my mentally unstable mother. I don't remember much about them, I was only little, but I grew up in the slums my whole childhood. I had a weak body and a hardly attractive face. I was the epitome of despair. I grew up starved and alone. I was bullied, by people that I didn't even know me. Maybe they did this to relieve stress. I was constantly blamed for every little thing by others around me. "Oh, it must have been that sorry excuse for a human who stole that bread," or "it must have been that ugly mess. After all, he was abandoned by his parents." I was thrown around repeatedly, and I had nothing to live for, but I couldn't kill myself. I still feared death. I was a coward, but I still died. Starved, beaten, and alone.
It was dark and cold. But I wasn't dead. How? Ha... even the gods think I'm the scum of the earth and won't even let me die and go somewhere peaceful. I couldn't open my eyes though, they were glued shut, but despite this, I could tell that I was out of that dark place because the light-flooded in through my closed eyelids. My arms were weak, and every noise was muffled. Even so, I heard a young female's voice.
"It's a boy!"
Confused, I tried to open my eyes once again, but the light was too blinding, so I shut them closed once more. I felt my body being picked up by large hands, and a warm towel caressed my skin.
"Congratulations, your majesty, not only was your first labor successful, but you delivered a male heir!" Another voice said.
What are they talking about? What do they mean, male heir? I tried to crane my head, to look over at the speaker, but my body did not allow me to so.
"Thank you, Cathleen." A weak but gentle voice said. "I do wish my husband was here, though. Did you send word to him through the transmission scroll?"
Transmission scroll? Where the hell am I? I felt myself being picked up once again, and I was handed over to another set of hands that shook slightly at the weight of my small body. Am I an infant? Is this a punishment for being a sorry excuse of a human in my past life? Did the gods forsake me, or was this a form of redemption? Confused thoughts kept me from focusing on what was happening around me.
"He has his majesty's luxurious black hair!" A woman's voice said, whom I believed to be my mother.
"Too true, your majesty. With his genes, I have no doubt he will be quite the looker!"
"Quite so, Helena." My mother put her hand on my head and I could feel her body sink further into the bed.
A looker? They couldn't help but burst out into laughter within my mind. I was not a pretty sight in my past life, so if this was reincarnation, I sure hope I at least could be moderately attractive.
"I wonder what his eyes look like," the handmaiden Cathleen asked.
"He was only born ten minutes ago; it's not likely he will open his eyes for another thirty minutes or so," Helena stated.
"When my baby was born, he opened his eyes right away."
"Cathleen dear, I believe it depends but let's not worry her Majesty with our idle chatter," Helena replied, soaking a cloth in a basin of water.
Well, this bunch seems to be lively. I tried to raise my arms, but my muscles' lack of control limited what I could do. Let's try to look around now. I opened my eyes, and the light-flooded in promptly. I squinted and looked around at my surroundings.
I was in a well-lit room, adorned with gold all over the walls and the large door that stood at the front of the room. This really was a palace. No, this whole reality really was... real. I looked over at the handmaidens who were quietly chattering amongst themselves, next to a basin of water in which they were soaking fresh towels. I looked over at my mother, who had her eyes closed. She looked exhausted, but that was understandable; after all, she just gave birth. Her warm hands held me close to her breasts. Her chest heaved, still out of breath. My eyes widened.
The handmaiden was truly not wrong about having good genes for sure. My mother had bright blond hair that seemed to flow down to just below her collarbone. Her face was slim, and her features were soft and gentle. Her eyelashes were long and thick, and her skin was smooth and slightly tanned, but still was considered pale. She looked like a foreign movie star. Her eyes opened, and she looked down at me, revealing bright green eyes that shone like emeralds. Her eyes widened as she saw me looking into her eyes, and she let out a small gasp.
"Your majesty, what is it?" The older handmaiden, who I assumed was Helena, rushed over.
"His eyes are open!" My mother said, smiling and peering down at my small face.
"Amazing, your majesty! Whose eyes does he have?" She asked, walking over with a fresh damp towel in hand, ready to place on my mother's hot forehead.
"Neither of us. His right eye is gold, and his left eye is purple." My mother said, still shocked. She stared down at me, shocked, but still gave off a loving aura that I couldn't help but feel relaxed in.
"I've never heard of any baby being born with two colors, and even more so, I've never heard of any person who had golden eyes or purple eyes! Only in old folk tales, my mother would read to me about the seraphim who had unnatural eye colors, like red, yellow, pink, and purple." Cathleen said, rushing over with another damp towel in hand, still a bit flustered to come to get a look at me.
I scoffed in my head. Heterochromia though rare where I was from, was still possible. I guess wherever 'here' is, it's not a thing. But I, too, also had never heard of anyone having gold or purple eyes naturally. But gods? Or rather seraphim? Really? I doubt it. Even if the gods did take pity on me and reincarnate me, my luck wasn't so good to where I would be the firstborn son of the king and queen and attain the powers of higher beings. The sound of boots clanking on the marble floor filled the corridor. I looked over at the large gold door swing open.
"Your Majesty! Pardon me for my abrupt intrusion, but I have just been notified that His majesty will be here soon via teleportation crystal!" The man proclaimed in a deep voice.
"That's good to hear." My mother said, smiling.
I began to feel a bit fatigued. All of this excitement really took a toll on my infant body. I closed my eyes and slipped into deep thought. Alright, so I'm an infant. Great. I guess this means I have a second chance... maybe, and I'm the crown prince with unnatural features as well. And wait, did he say teleportation crystal? I guess I really am in a fantasy world where magic is a thing. Great. This is really what I needed after living a hellish life, but I can get used to it. It's better than my sorry past.
I continued my train of thought, creating various theories about my situation, but I eventually accepted what had happened and hoped for the best. Maybe, I hope my life will not be as tragic as it was in the past. I shut my eyes, closed even tighter, and fell asleep.
