"Well, the ability to use magic and have mana isn't hereditary. It's more of a luck-of-the-draw type of thing. Only 1 in 100 people can use these things. Still, the majority of mages at most can only heal a few cuts and bruises or light a small flame on the tip of their finger." My dad said, sitting down onto the dusty ground.
"I'm still a bit confused, dad. The books that I read didn't really make sense when they explained mages, so do you mind telling me?"
I sat down next to my dad and looked up at his face. I already did some reading on my own in my room, but I still couldn't read in the language fluently, so I still had many unanswered questions. I could tell that the look on my dad's face; he was already dreading having to explain things to me. I shot him a quick smile to lighten the mood.
"This may take a bit of explaining, but ill try to make it easy to understand. Mages are pretty rare. As I said, 1 in 100 people can use magic but can't do any complicated spells. Mages are separated into categories, ranging from E class mages to A class mages. E class mages can do things like making a flame on their finger or use simple healing spells. E class mages are the most common types of mages and typically use their magic for everyday things. They are not suited for combat. D class mages can do the same things as an E class mage, accept rather than lighting a flame on one finger, they can light up their whole hand and can also use more potent healing spells. Remember, these are just examples like if a mage doesn't have an affinity for fire, they won't be able to use fire magic. Anyway, continuing up the ladder, we have C class mages. These mages can go into combat in low-class dungeons but typically shouldn't go without a party. There are two types of C class mages. Those who can shoot their magic spells long distances or surround themselves, or C class mages that can enhance their body and weapons, or anything that is touching them. If a flame mage is the enhancer type, they will use their magic to make their sword burst into flames. A projector mage would be able to shoot their spells outwards; in fact, your mother is a C class projector wind mage. She can control the wind and shoot it forward in a concentrated stream. The next step up is a B class mage. A B class mage can do the same things as a C projector mage and a C class enhancer mage. You will only be considered a B class if you can enhance and project magic, rather than only do one or the other. B class mages can go on solo raids in C class dungeons and below but should have a party if they go into a B class dungeon. Finally, we have A class mages. A class mage can do everything a B class mage can do, but they can use magic for longer because they have more mana. Their spells are also more potent. An example of some A-class mages would be the court magicians in Dareon kingdom on the other continent I told you about or the Director of Dareons Magic Academy."
My mind wandered off for a second while listening to my dad's explanation. So the Dareon Kingdom, my birthplace, had some of the few A-Class mages in the world. That's quite the achievement. I knew that the Dareon Kingdom was the largest kingdom on the eastern continent, but I still never understood the full scope of its power. I never really read any books about Dareon. My family owned scarce if any books regarding the eastern continent.
"Ah, it will be afternoon soon. I'll finish up my explanation up." My father said, stretching out his legs. "There are only 8 A class mages alive in our time, but so far in the last 150 years, there have only been 39 A-Class mages. Next, let's talk about affinity for the elements. There are several different types of magic.
First are the elements. Every mage can control an element, like someone who has an affinity for wind will use wind magic. The types of elements that a mage can have an affinity in are Fire, Earth, Water, Wind, Metal, Gravity, and Lightning. There has been a case of a mage being able to control Light and Darkness, but that is more of a legend than solid history. There are also rare cases where mages can control two elements rather than one. The next type of magic is called sub magic. This type of magic is normally not used for combat. Examples of sub magic would be healing, the ability to detect lies, and the most desired type of sub magic, the ability to see the future. There are many sub magics that I could only name a few off the top of my head, but having sub magic is uncommon. Sometimes an E class mage will have the ability to use sub magic but will not have an affinity for the elements.
Last thing I'm going to explain—the awakening of a mage. A mage will typically become aware of their magic power when they are ten years old to early teens. I'm not quite sure how it feels because I am not a mage. You would need to ask your mother. Anyway, mages all start at an E class level and can improve their skills to become an E medium-class mage, and then break through to D class. Typically there is something called the break stage, which is C class. It's incredibly hard to break out of C class to B because you have to learn to enhance and project magic, so most mages stay at C class and specialize in one or the other.
You can improve your magic by increasing your mana output and meditating so that your body can produce more mana. This is easier for some people, which is why people stay as an E or D class mage. The other reason is called mana block, which is where even if you are not an A-class, it becomes impossible to strengthen your magic. This is the most common reason and the reason there are few A-class mages. A-class mages can increase their rank from low A-class to medium to max A-class. Each letter class has three stages within it. Every mage possesses mana. The more mana you have, the longer you can use your magic, and the more potent the mana is, the stronger your magic is. As you grow and learn magic, your mana will become stronger and increase." My dad coughed and pulled out a water container, and took a drink. He sighed and looked over at me.
"What's peculiar about you, kiddo is that you seem to have awakened as a mage without even knowing it. You were able to enhance your body with mana to protect yourself from the stick's blow. This means that if your body actually was enhanced, your at least a C class mage, and your only 5. I'll need to talk to your mother, but other than that, you did very well today. It's clear you improved greatly from the last time we sparred." He stood up and brushed off his pants.
Dad tilted the water container upside down. A few drops dripped out.
"Well, I'm out of the water, and we have an hour walk back home. I'm going to go fill this up. You wait here, okay?"
"No problem Dad," I said, leaning back into the grass.
A C-class mage, huh. I folded my arms and put them behind my head, and looked up at the cloudless sky. After what dad told me, that doesn't seem likely. After all, according to him and a few of the books I read, mages only awaken in their early teens. The probability was just...
My train of thought was interrupted by the sound of giggling coming from behind one of the trees.
I sat up and swept my bangs over my gold eye and looked over.
"I've never seen you around these parts. Who are you?" A voice asked.
