I’ve been working for 6 hours already, and I couldn’t feel more dead. Seconds turn into minutes, minutes turn into hours, and hours turn to days!
I hate when I have to work a whole day since there are very few people most of the time. I get so bored that I end up having a staring contest with the stuffed reindeer decoration on the left side of the cash register. And it doesn’t help to have the same Christmas playlist going on loop every hour, and all this shiny Christmas stuff slowly blinds me.
Don’t get me wrong though. I like Christmas. Except for the pressure of buying stuff, and that you’re forced to be with family members you really want to avoid.
One of my uncles during a Christmas 3 years back, told us about a young worker at his place, that he got along with really well, but then the worker's husband showed up. That made my uncle furious, calling it “A SIN” and that they should get treatment, or just get in jail. I don’t even wanna spell out what he said about transgender or LGBTQ in general. He made me extra anxious about coming out.
I really hope he won’t be there this Christmas eve. The fact that nobody else stepped in to ever stop him for saying stuff like that makes me think they all just agree to his statements. If I just once were able to speak up, but I’m too much of a coward and if others agree I would just make things worse for myself.
I hear the doorbell ring. Finally! A customer!!! My body starts shaking and I forget how I’m supposed to act. How do I socialize?
I hear the sound of high heels hitting the plastic floor, followed with a gum pop. Then the shadow reveals itself. Then I answer with a disappointed “Oh it’s you.” Followed up with me hitting the cash register desk…
Its Lila my co-worker who works the days I don’t. She has black hair with some purple stripes, she also has dark purple lipstick and black clothes on, but why does she have the Starbucks apron on her? And why is she here anyway?
As I close my eyes, still resting my head at the counter, she starts grunting angrily, and I can hear her high heels clicking quickly. Then my head starts burning, like boiling hot water combined with needles sticking me! I see Lila’s face turning red, as she’s just dragged my head up from the counter. She lets go of my hair, and I start yelling “WTF! LILA!!!” She rolls her eyes, and lean backwards popping her gum again, then replaying with a pessimism tone “You’re such a drama queen yezz…” I rub my head, still feeling hurt from her grabbing. She then responds, “Listen I don’t like talking to someone who’s half asleep.” She walks at my side of the counter and continues after another gum pop “You can go now drama queen; I take rest of the shift for you.” I jump in a shook! “What! WHY!?!” I respond looking all shocked. “Calm down, if you really wanna work for another 2 hours then be my guest.” I walk fast to the exit door while saying “No, no. Thank you. Thank youuu…” I turn around folding my hands and continue “Thank you, you kind-hearted being.” She smiles and then says, “You can really be too much sometimes.” I laugh. “Also, I forgot to tell you, we're gonna work together starting from tomorrow till the 22nt.” I wave and walk out.
Lila likes to act like she hates me but were close friends. She’s the only co-worker I get a good connection with. But I would never think we were that close, that she would take my shift.
I’m standing right outside the exit door for Starbucks. Feeling the fresh cold air filling my inner body up. I walk towards the bank to get a new credit card. Then I suddenly hear someone running behind me yelling “Hey!” I turn around seeing the cute employee from the mall running towards me, wearing grey gym clothes and on top of that a black winter jacket, and a black Adidas gym bag. He stops when he’s finally right beside me, he leans down at the ground, to catch his breath. Then he gets up again, and stare at me with his bright, and beautiful purple eyes. His eyes are even prettier during the night, or maybe it's just been too long since I last saw them. But it hasn’t been more than two days since he first saw this adorable boy. When I look at him it feels like everything around me gets brighter, and I forget what I was supposed to do. His nose still got that perfect balance, and his lips still look as soft as before. His hair is still wet, it's irresponsible of him to not dry his hair enough during winter, does he want to catch a cold?
Were both quiet as we stare at each other. It takes a long while before any one of us starts talking. Then he shakes his head and grabs something from his left pocket on his jacket. “I… I got something for you…” He’s less confident than for 2 days ago. Makes sense since he isn’t working. His voice isn’t as deep as I remember, but it fits him better, and the fact that he’s less confident, and have a lighter voice, makes him more attractive… That’s it there’s no turning back now. You can’t come up with more excuses Siren, you’ve got a crush on this boy, it official.
He draws his hand towards me, and says “I’m sorry for being so late, I wanted to give you this personally.” I look down at his hand, it's my wallet! I look up at him, he starts blushing as he looks away saying “I… I’m really sorry, I didn’t know where to find you, and I know I should’ve just let it be in the store, but the thing is…” and the next few words he said made my heart bounce like nothing you could even imagine! He still hides a bit of his face as he spells it out
“I like you…”
