My head hurts like hell. It seems like someone is repeatedly banging inside my head. I can barely recall the party last night. The last thing that I can remember before I passed out is the sound of bottles clinking and glass breaking.
The banging continues, forcing me to open my eyes. Somebody is knocking on the apartment's door. I suddenly sit upright on my bed. The sudden motion made my head hurt even more. Even the familiar sound of splashing water in the bathroom makes me feel worse. The clock beside my bed says it's only 7:30 in the morning.
I look around the mess that we made last night. My roommate, Gian, is still fast asleep on his bed. It was Gian's birthday yesterday and he celebrated with his friends in our apartment. I've been tolerating him since he moved in two months ago. As much as I want to live alone, I can't really afford this apartment just by myself.
I get up from bed to see who's at the door at this hour. I look down at myself and realize that I'm only wearing my boxer shorts. I was too drunk last night to put on some clothes. I don't usually drink but since I'm trying to get along with Gian, I accepted their offer to drink with them.
I grab a shirt and hastily put it on as I make my way to the door. When I open it, the irritated face of our landlady greets me. Looking at my landlady's wet hair, I realize that the sound of water coming from the bathroom is now gone.
"Parang nagkasayahan yata kayo kagabi. Sabi ng mga nasa kabilang unit, madaling araw na raw kayo natapos mag-party." She did not even bother to greet me a good morning.
I fell asleep at around midnight, so I guess Gian and his friends continued drinking until morning.
"Yes po. Birthday po kasi ni Gian kahapon kaya medyo nagkayayaan po mag-inuman," I explained. "Hindi naman po kami masyadong nag-ingay kagabi."
She looks at me doubtfully. She always have this expression that I really hate. She can make you feel guilty for something that you did not even do just by looking at you with that beady eyes of hers.
"Sabi ni George nakita niya raw na may babaeng pumasok dyan sa unit ninyo kagabi. Nakasabay niya raw pag-akyat nung umuwi siya kaninang madaling araw." Her death stare is in full force now. "Alam mo naman ang patakaran ko dito, 'di ba?"
George is the nurse living in the adjacent unit. I rarely see him because he's always sleeping during the day and only comes out at night to go to work. I wonder who's the girl he's talking about. As far as I know, we were all guys last night. Besides, I know how strict our landlady is. She has kicked out tenants in the past who broke her "No Girls Allowed" rule. She's very serious with that rule of hers, believe me.
"Wala naman po kaming babaeng kasama kagabi. Kami lang po ni Gian saka mga kaibigan niya ang andito. Umalis na rin po kaagad ang mga kaibigan niya," I explained to her. I even prompt her to come inside and take a look.
I don't know if it's because of my hangover and I am just hallucinating, but as my landlady steps into our apartment, the bathroom door opened and a very pretty girl wrapped in towel comes out. Her hair is still dripping wet from the shower.
