Many years had passed since that night, and the boys both turned 18. The oldest was named Michael, after his father, and the youngest name Nathan, after his mother Natalia. They were both separated and haven't seen each other since they were 6, until another fateful night.
I woke up in my room to a bright orange light coming from my window, I looked at the clock. 12:09 A.M.. I thought to myself “Well, Happy Birthday to me, I guess.” I then looked out the window and saw that the neighbor’s house was on fire, I climbed out of bed and woke up my adopted parents. “Wake up, there is a fire next door!” They got up and we all went outside to see what was going on. There were ambulances and firetrucks on the road in the front. I went to talk to the other neighbors about what they saw happen.
“Oh Nathan darling, thank goodness you are alright.” Said the nice Lady that lived across the street from us.
“What happened Miss Anne? Do you know?”
“Oh Dear, I heard that somebody left their phone charge on their bed while it was plugged in and it caught fire.”
“Is everyone alright? Did everyone make it out okay?”
“The only one left in the house is lil’ Tommy, poor boy. I just saw a firefighter go in there, come to think of it, he kind of looked like you Hun.”
“Thank you Miss Anne, I am going to go talk to them and make sure they are alright.”
“Alright doll, take care.”
I walked over towards the ambulances to talk to Tommy’s parents to make sure they weren’t too hurt.
“Sir you can’t come over he- Oh Nathan, what a surprise. Do you think you could help out and make sure those people are alright. I know you are still studying to become a doctor but I know you work hard and know a lot more than some doctors I know.”
“Sure thing Rob.”
I walked past him and helped out the family.
I suddenly heard a large explosion and the building collapsed. I got worried for a moment, so I looked around and saw a firefighter holding Timmy away from the explosion, shielding him with his back. I went over to help Timmy. The firefighter stood up and handed me the boy.
“Here you go kid, alright take care of hi-”
We looked at each other. We were both shocked at how we looked so similar, in fact we looked the exact same, we even had the same hair color and eye color. Although he had soot and ash all over him from the house.
We were so shocked that Timmy had to interrupt.
“Excuse me *cough cough* can I have some water?”
I snapped out of it and answered him. “Of course, let’s go see your parents and get you looked at.”
I took Timmy and brought him over to his parents. I looked back and he was still looking at me in shock. I don’t blame him, I knew I was adopted, but I didn’t know I had a twin.
Another firefighter went to make sure he was okay, and I suppose he said no, because they started walking towards the ambulance I was helping at. When the firefighter saw me, it was like he was seeing double, although I guess he was.
“No way Michael! You duplicated yourself.”
He hit him upside the head, “You idiot.”
I held out my hand, “Nice to meet you, my name is Nathan. I am studying to become a doctor.” The reason I was so quick to introduce myself, is because I wanted to know if we were actually twins, that would mean we had the same birthday and we both just turned 18 a little under an hour ago.
Michael grabbed my hand and shook it. “Nice to meet you, my name is Michael and this is my friend The Idiot.”
“My name isn’t Idiot.”
“You are right, I said The Idiot”
“That doesn’t make it better!”
I could tell they were close friends. Eventually he introduced himself as Ted. Michael and I talked some more and found out we actually were twins, we exchanged phone numbers.
I walked back to my parents and explained what happened with the fire and how I found out I had a twin, they didn’t seem too shocked, more curious as to how I found out. I told them that I just met him, they told me that we would talk about it in the morning and that we should go to bed. I agreed since it was so late and we went into our rooms, but I had trouble sleeping. I just learned I had a twin, give a guy a little break, I wasn’t exactly tired.
